slm,

Can I just say I really really enjoyed it!!! I really miss going to conferences/conventions.... When I was younger I'd go to something every couple of months and that would keep my imaan high.

Alhamdulillah this one was very interesting... Very... trendy almost... and a good trend at that... I liked how they had young, non-accented speakers perfect for the youth. In fact I think ALL ?? were either converts (zaid shakir, ingrid mattson, abdul malik) or grew up in the US and found the deen, went to study and are becoming/are scholars (nouman ali khan, husain abdul sattar, kamal el mekki) AND subhanallah 1400 people for an EZ conference!!  I remember the time we got 300 and were absolutely joyous..

The conf was more isna than EZ... but i think it was still very good.. I especially enjoyed nouman ali khan who i've never heard of even before.. very insightful brother mashallah.

I was a little disheartened that alot of people left the site to visit the attractions of nyc, go shopping, go to a car show? etc stuff like that... but i guess that is the negative side of having an islamic conf in such a happenning city.

Anywayz I enjoyed listening to the thoughts of the speakers,' feel reconnected to ppl of faith', met some old friends and made a few new one's, bought a few books from the bazaar and walked up and down those 7 flights of stairs 3 or 4 times... good times...

what did y'all think?

More notes.. This from noon:

salaams....

hey guys... so like the geek i am... i went ahead and typed some of
the notes from the conf and thought id share them with u.... im not
the type of person who cries at all in lectures and stuff.. but this
one brought at least ONE tear ... and it didnt even fall on my cheek
lol.. hehehe  anywhos so i hope u enjoy it... i wont feel offended if
u dont read.. i noe its long.. u ppl are prolly busy.. but ull be
missing out :P,

so shaykh abdul sattar hussain... (i hope i got his name right) spoke
at the MSAEZ abt how fatima (RA) had sooo much love for her father,
the Prophet (SAWS).....

seriously it was one of the best lectures ever..... heres wat he
said... (this is gonna be a spark notes version...)

so obviously the young kids of back in the days of the Prophet were
NOTHING like they are now... at the age of five, the Prophet told
Fatima that he has been given the message of Allah(SWT) to spread to
everyone else and if she accepts? and she said yes.... now u might be
thinking ok shes five... shes gonna say yes to her father... but look
who were talkin abt here??? it wasnt just ANY kind of yes....

going on... one time as the Prophet was praying, these bad men came
and spilled intestines over his head... a sahaba counldnt do anything
because there were alot of them, so at the age of NINE, she stepped up
to them... telling them wat they are doing is wrong... and she did it
in such a way that they actually stopped and left....

moving along.... Fatima became known as "Um Abuha" to the Prophet
which in Arabic means " the mother of her father" , she had such
wonderful characteristics of a good loving mother that it was like the
Prophet was her own child..... this is how much she cared for him...
(i cant even begin to express how amazed i still am from this lecture
by the way)

marriage -

so when Ali (RA) came to ask for the hand of Fatima (R), he couldnt
even talk...words couldnt come out of his mouth... look at it this
way.... he was asking the founder of Islam for the hand in marriage to
the queen of islam... so when the prophet saw that he was shy...the
Prophet (SAWS) said "u want to marry Fatima?" and then Ali nodded...
so the Prophet said "welcome to the family ......"

pause for silent AWWWWWWWWWWWW (just liek the audience did at the conf)

Fatima was also the first child to marry someone who was not
wealthy... one time she went to the Prophet and told him that her and
Ali (R) had some financial problems... now today.. a father, if asked
this, would pull out his wallet and start giving his daughter the
money she needed, but instead the Prophet (SAWS) told Fatime "I have
something better for you" and so he told her the tasbeeh... the one
that we do during salah, this is why it is known as "tasbeehu
fatima".....

this one shud get u in the heart...

the shaykh also recommended that muslims name their daughter fatima...
because on the day of judgement... even Allah(SWT) will have shame for
putting someone named Fatima in Jahanem...

SUBHANALLAH

ok going along.. (if ur still with me ) while Fatima was sitting next
to the Prophet, he whispered two things in her ear... the first time
she cried... and the second she cried even harder....

so when she was asked why she cried.. she said the Prophet (SAWS) told
me that he is going to die soon, and when she was asked why she cried
even harder ... she said that the Prophet said that she was going to
be the next one after him" her tears after the second question were
tears of joy ... not sorrow.... becuase she wanted to be in the
company of the Prophet all the tine

so after the Prophet (SAWS) passed away, it is said that Fatima (R)
did not smile or laff for five months... after this.. one day she woke
up in such a happy mood... she told her servant to prepare a bath and
clean clothes for her... after she bathed and dressed, she went to lay
on her bed, and then her husband Ali (R) came in and said "wats going
on?" and then Fatima replied "i am meeting the Prophet (SAWS) today"

baraka -

so the shaykh said this AWESOME story (it will relate back to
Fatima(R) so hold ur horses... ) about baraka....

there was this couple... and the husband had a dream where this man
told him to go dig up 1000 dirhams (money) under this tree... so the
hubby asked if it has baraka in it.. and the guy said no... so he told
his wife and she said go dig it up.. and the hubby said i cant because
it has no baraka... so the next night the same thing happened except
with more money...

on the third night.. the hubby had the same dream.. except this time
the guy said there was only one dinar with baraka in it... so the next
day the hubby digs up and surely he found the one dinar... he goes to
the market .. gets a fish.. and gives it to his wife to cook.. when
she cut the fish.. there was a pearl inside of it worth over 1000
dirhams..... (ahhh subhanallah)

so how does this relate to Fatima(R)???

well Ali (R) sold half his belongings so that he can come up with $250
worth of silver for a mahr (dowry)

MESSAGE TO SINGLE MEN: (from the shaykh)

when it comes to giving the dowry.... dont argue with ur parents or
hers for that matter.. just give and once ur married.... also give
$250, although it seems very little.... it has baraka init .. and what
a way to start a marraige..

if u made it this far down.. hope u enjoyed it
salaams

Well, $250 worth of silver during Ali's (ra) time is half his wealth. So, me thinks, lets go for the principle rather than real numbers.

So brothers, how about half your wealth for mahr? ;)
