First I will apologize before hand should I say something or say it somehow that is offensive. Please know I do not mean it to be! It is only my lack of understanding that I would cause another regret or hurt. My great niece may soon go to Yemen to live. We(her non muslim side of the family) would like to know a little of what it might be like for her there. I don't know much about where her father's family is other than a coastal region and I think a good sized city. Her father never spoke much of his homeland. I am not worried about the "religion" aspect since I believe in the one GOD and that he created all religions for a reason. I do wonder about education, life as a little girl and as teen and anything else someone might think important. Thank you so much. I have learned alot about Islam that is both beautiful and exciting. I think accurate reporting in the press both here in the US and in the middle east is difficult and I hope to learn a great deal more over time. I have not said or done something offensive I hope. I am willing to learn. Thank you very much! |

Hi Anonymous, I'm glad to see your post here :) And don't worry about offending us we're all pretty thickheaded here ;) Middle eastern countries vary quite a bit in their customs. While they are all Muslim, there are so many differences in cultural things. Also some places may do things in the 'name of religion' which are really culture. So I guess you'll have to ask us some questions!!! |

[slm] and hello... My cousin-in-laws live in Sana'a. One worked for the World Bank, and has recently accepted a position in Washington. It was a transfer from Yemen to the US! :) The other one recieved her Masters in Education, and used to teach -- however, she has recently gotten married. I'm not sure if she's still teaching or doing something else. Both do not wear hijab, but are "compelled" to by custom when they leave the house (hijab and abayah... the black, purple or tiger-stripe print scarves... depending on who you ask ;) and an overcoat). The public sphere according to them is quite male dominated... but they have obviously excelled in their feilds, and do have fun on their own time and in their own space. Um... but both of them were schooled in the American/British school system. So yes, there are opportunities for your grand neice. Some women have it good, some not so good -- but this is everywhere, and is also linked to how affluent one's family is. Best, ~Nistar |
