The Summit of Evil in this World is Disbelief
"Good And Evil" By Sh. M. Al-Sha`rawi

Many non-Muslims to whom we talk about religion have a hard time understanding why they could be punished in the Hereafter if they are kind, honest, just etc. with other fellow humans. Their problem is that they do not realize that Allah ta`aalaa may forgive killing of a hundred people, but has promised not to forgive taking anyone as a partner to Him. They do not realize that their crime against their Creator is much worse than any crime against creation that they can imagine. So their being kind and just towards the creation is of no use if they show arrogance, heedlessness, denial and ungratefulness towards the Lord of the worlds, His Law, His Books, His Prophets etc..
AlHamdulillaah, I have found a written piece that discusses the greatness of the crime of kufr, may Allah ta`aalaa protect us from it.

The Summit of Evil in this World is Disbelief

"Good And Evil" By Sh. M. Al-Sha`rawi

The summit of evil in this world is disbelief. There is no greater evilto be found than that because there is no sin grater than disbelief. An unbeliever has committed something which causes Allah to exclude him from His mercy. That is why Allah Almighty says: "Allah does not forgive anything being made a partner with Him but He forgives apart from that to anyone He wills." (4:48)

Thus even if someone who enters into disbelief were to be given the entire world, it would be evil for him, because however much he has, the enjoyment of this world is very little. However much wealth, rank, or power he has it will leave him. That is why Allah Almighty says: "The worst of beasts in the sight of Allah are those who reject and do not believe." (8:55)

Why are they the worst of beasts? We know that beasts have no intellect. They cannot think or understand. Nonetheless, they carry out their appointed tasks in full. They carry loads and perform all that is asked of them or for which they were created. They are ruled by instinct. When food is brought they eat what they need and then stop eating. If you try to tempt them with more food they refuse it, no matter what it is, because the rule of instinct is a true one which only lets the animal have what it needs. On the other hand, you find man, who has been given choice, stuffing his belly with food. Someone tells him, "You did not try this sweet," or "You have never tasted this variety," and he does not respect the fact that Allah has forbidden us excess with regard to food. He fills his stomach until he is unable to move. The human species directs itself to sensual gratification and not simply to self-preservation.

Allah Almighty has honored man with intellect so that he can reflect on His signs in existence and come to believe that this universe has a Creator who brings things into existence. But instead of that, he uses his intellect as a means to disbelief and heresy and so it distances him from Allah and makes him disobedient to Allah. So it is as if he repudiates this great honour which Allah has given him. Indeed, he directs it to the opposite of its appointed task and in doing so he is lower than a beast which crawls on the earth on all fours.

Weeping for the Christian Monks

What to say about a human being who possibly misled more other humans than any of his contemporaries? A taghut who promoted the worst sin, declared what is lawful as unlawful and what is unlawful as lawful, while people followed him? Should one weep for him? Indeed.

Muslims ought to recognize the enormity of the crime of disbelief and attributing a son to Allah the Most High.

The Qur'an says, "And they say, ‘The Most Merciful has taken a son.’ You have done an atrocious thing. The heavens almost rupture therefrom and the earth splits open and the mountains collapse in devastation. That they attribute to the Most Merciful a son. And it is not appropriate for the Most Merciful that He should take a son. There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant." [Maryam: 88-93]

Their deeds are futile, while they were thinking otherwise: "Say: ‘Shall we not inform regarding the greatest losers concerning their deeds? They are those whose efforts are wasted in the worldly life, whilst thinking that they were performing the best of actions." [al-Kahf: 103-4]

“Those who disbelieved - their deeds are like a mirage on a plain, in which a thirsty person thinks there is water; when he approaches it he finds nothing but he finds Allah before him and He repays him his account in full, as Allah is swift in taking account.” [al-Noor: 39]

The worthlesness of their hard labor is also explained in the following passage from Tafsir Ibn Kathir (of Soorah al-Ghashiyah):

(Some faces that Day will be Khashi`ah) meaning, humiliated. This was said by Qatadah. Ibn `Abbas said, "They will be humble but this action will be of no benefit to them.'' Then Allah says,

(Laboring, weary) meaning, they did many deeds and became weary in their performance, yet they will be cast into a blazing Fire on the Day of Judgement. Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr Al-Burqani narrated from Abu `Imran Al-Jawni that he said, " `Umar bin Al-Khattab passed by the monastery of a monk and he said: `O monk!' Then the monk came out, and `Umar looked at him and began to weep. Then it was said to him: `O Commander of the faithful! Why are you weeping' He replied: `I remembered the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, in His Book,

(Laboring, weary. They will enter into Fire, Hamiyah.) So that is what has made me cry. ''' Al-Bukhari recorded that Ibn `Abbas said,

(Laboring, weary) "The Christians.'' It is narrated that `Ikrimah and As-Suddi both said, "Laboring in the worldly life with disobedience, and weariness in the Fire from torment and perdition.'' Ibn `Abbas, Al-Hasan, and Qatadah all said,

(They will enter into Fire, Hamiyah) meaning, hot with intense heat. [Tafsir In Kathir, © Darussalam]

Satan’s Great Manipulation of the Christians
Imam Ibn ul Qayyim al Jawziyyah

Ighatul-Lahfaan min Masaa`id al-Shaytan
Translalated by Islaam.com
It is obvious to anyone with reason that Satan has greatly manipulated these misled people (Christians). He called them and they responded to him; he befooled them and they obeyed him.

He manipulated them with regards to Allah, the Exalted and Most High.

He manipulated them with regards to Jesus (peace be upon him).

He manipulated them with regards to the cross and the worship of it.

He also manipulated them with regards to making pictures and statues in churches and then worshipping them, so you will not find one of their churches without the picture of Mary and Jesus, saints and other holy individuals and martyrs of theirs. Most of them prostrate to pictures and statues, and pray to them instead to Allah the Most High…

The typical example of what these polytheists are doing is like that of a servant of a king who entered upon a man, so the man jumped from his place, prostrated to the servant, worshipped him, and did to him what he was not supposed to do except to the king. Every rational person would consider him an ignorant and a fool because of what he did, since he did to the king’s servant what he was supposed to do only to the king, in terms of honoring, humbleness and humility.

It is well-known that what the servant did here is more likely to cause the king to hate him and look down upon him than to honor him and exalt his status.

This is the situation of one who prostrates to creation, or a picture of creation. This is because he resorted to prostration which is the greatest means of reaching the Lord’s pleasure. Such an action is not valid except for Allah, so there is no greater repulsiveness or injustice than doing it for a picture or statue of a servant and equalizing between Allah and His servant.

This is why Allah the Most High said, “Verily, shirk (polytheism, setting up partners with Allah) is a great injustice.” [Luqman: 33]

Allah the Most High has created his worshippers prone to recognize ugliness in expressing exaltation, glorification, sumbisiveness and humility towards king’s slaves and servants (as such actions are usually done for the king).

So what is the situation of the one who shows this type of reverence to king’s enemies? For Satan is the enemy of Allah, and the polytheist is in reality setting Satan, not Allah’s prophets and righteous servants¸ as a partner with Allah. For the prophets and righteous servants have nothing to do with those who set them as partners with Allah; they are against them and the strongest in hatred of all people towards them. The polytheists, therefore, are only setting up as partners with Allah His enemies, and equalizing between them and Allah in worship, exaltation, prostration and humility.

This is why the invalidity and ugliness of polytheism is recognized by sound innate nature and reason, and this type of ugliness is recognized more clearly than its other types.

The intent here was to mention Satan’s manipulation of these people in both the foundation and branches of their religion.
