Traveling to Iran?

Hi there,

If you were travelling to Iran as a western white woman what things do you need to know?
What should you wear? I realize it is common for guests to wear long skirts and wider
shirts but i heard even the colors matter. Is it true? I want to wear what is common there,
so that I am not embaressed by sticking out in a crowd. I am going to Tehran and another
city 4 hours north of Tehran.

Would I have to cover my face? Do i need abaya? Am I allowed to wear sneakers, sandals? I
got little information from the travel agency, mostly useful is that not to take pictures
of any government buildings. But I need to know more. I want this to be a good experience
and to go in there aware of the culture more. I heard there are Eastern style washrooms,
should I take toilet paper with me?

Any relevant information would be great. Thanks.

salaam / peace,

I find it so interesting that you are visiting Iran at this time, considering the political climate.  that takes a lot of courage, and if you are going with the intent of learning more and soaking in the culture, that is very cool  8)

I don't know much about Iran, having not visited there myself, but one of my closest friends growing up was Iranian.  I would suggest buying long skirts, full-sleeve shirts, and perhaps some scarves to cover your head with, all in light material (cotton/linen).  I don't know about colors, but I would think that as long as they are not overly bright (like neon yellow or bright pink), and are more neutral or earth tone type colors, that they should be okay.  As far as I know, many women in Iran do not cover their face, so that is not something you would be obliged to do.

I would also assume that the urban cities would be the more 'liberal' in terms of dress, while if you are visiting a village or country side, they may be a bit more conservative and traditional.

one of the best guides out there for visting a new country is "Lonely Planet".  If you could pick up a copy at the library or at a bookstore, I think that would give you a lot of insight into the best way to dress and other tips for visiting.

I hope your trip goes well :)  it would be nice if you posted about your travels and your reflections once you return :)

take care,
