Assalamu 'Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh marigolds grow like weeds on my front porch.. i've tried so many different flowers and they are all delicate and don't really bloom well but those marigolds man ma'shallah they are like soldiers thru thick and thin...they also stay bloomed most of the summer as long as u plant early (like now) the other things we have are daffodils and tulips which are great for the northeast.. we have a beautiful purple lilac tree, but for some reason it keeps growing up and has less and less blooms and we have a big bunch of peonies.. some roses but they are like just one or two and a few more tend to die every long winter our back yard sux so we can't really grow anything there.. altho i did try hot peppers and tomatos in pots and they grow really well with care |

[slm] whats growing back on its own this year: black eyed susan azaleas some random perrenial i picked up last year crocus has already bloomed tulips are coming up as are hyacinths peonie is just breaking out of its shell.. as are the purple and yellow iris and of course the roses and this flowe my family calls 'jump and kiss' i forget its real name! shallots (green onion) and of course the pear tree is getting ready to blossom what's in the works for planting: green baseball bat sized squash some hot peppers..probably habanero maybe a tomato or two (smaller garden this year b/c of sis's wedding) spinach and celery and thyme are the norm (we have terrible clayish soil..but you gotta add some fresh top soil...get some manure..and fertilizer) and rotate your crops ...it works..and plenty water in the summer ! ) flowerwise: marigolds are like weeds and are easy to maintain here..so they shall be planted as are petunias might try geraniums this year as well. already did the raking and forking up of the soil. the first mowing of the lawn has occurred...so here we go..............!! oh yeh.. the lilac may need a pruning jannah..thats why there are less blooms.. and spray your plants to prevent bugs from taking over. look pesticides they may be but they save them..esp the flowerss..if anything spray the flowers. it does work! i'm hungry now. salaam! |

[slm], Yay! There is a gardening thread, and I found it :)!!! Seems everyone here was talking about spring time. Now that we are half into August, how is everyone's garden doing? Sister Jannah, it's true, you should trim back your lilacs to cause more blooms and make them bushier. But, you should do this just after the flowers fade, as next years buds form over the summer - so, wait until next spring and cut it back, insha'allah, by the next summer you will have many more blooms. My garden is in zone 4 and our season usually goes from late April to late October, but, with all this global warming and crazy weather going on - only Allah knows what the growing season is anymore!!! This time of year here's what's blooming in our garden: cardinal flowers (a type of lobelia - hummingbird's love them!), annual and false sunflowers, marguerites, phlox (the aroma of the white ones is soooo beautiful), black-eyed susans, veroncia, obedient plants, prairie coneflower, white coneflower, catmint, everlasting, various varieties of coreopsis, roses, yarrow, shasta daisies, delphinium, glads, sweet peas, clematis, morning glories, lamium, blazing star, astilbe, sedum, cosmos, marigolds, petunias, dianthus, scabiosa, gentian, rudbeckia 'black beauty', tradescantia, stella d'oro day lilies, pansies, salvia, flax, nicotiana, dahlias, forget-me-nots, portulaca, zinnias, snap dragons, nemesia, cleome, calibrachoa, bacopa, and .... O.k., that's a rather long list, and not even all of them! Anyway, many more have already finished blooming and there are still a few to come. One thing about a garden, you learn to make many notes :D. Does anyone grow nasturtium? I used to grow them in pots very successfully but have had little luck in the ground! I've tried transplanted purchased ones (not too good) and planting my own from seed (only slightly better). I love their flowers and even the leaves are attractive. This year, I have managed a handful of very puny little plants that flowered a bit and have kind of just sat there since. Anyway, I do hope the gardening thread gets used. My garden reminds me of Allah more than anything else! "And in the earth are tracts (diverse though) neighbouring, and gardens of vines and fields sown with corn, and palm trees - growing out of a single root or otherwise: watered with the same water, yet some of them We make more excellent than others to eat. Behold, verily in these things there are Signs for those who understand!" Qur'an Ar-Ra'd 13:4 Peace, ummziba. |
