A new study says Transcendental Meditation, a form of meditation that became "in" during the Beatle's era to the point of becoming a fad in the United States with a relatively long shelf life, can actually extend lives.

To some, this may be shocking. But to true devotees of yoga everywhere, it's yet another confirmation.

The New York Times reports:


   According to a paper published yesterday in The American Journal of Cardiology, Transcendental Meditation, or T.M., is highly effective in reducing the rate of death from cardiovascular disease in people with high blood pressure.

   In a retrospective 18-year follow-up of two randomized controlled trials, Transcendental Meditation was associated with significantly lower mortality than other mental relaxation techniques or standard drugs for high blood pressure.

As we noted, yoga practitioners (and we've studied and practiced it while living in New Delhi, India and Madrid, Spain) have long reported that meditation can lead to greater focus, less stress, more relaxation, increased energy and other positive side effects. Some even reported out of body experiences. (If you don't know what an out of body experience is, think about Dennis Kucinich and Alan Keyes...wait: I think those may be out of mind experiences..)

In India in 1972, when this writer was a college intern working on The Hindustan Times Evening News in New Delhi, a yoga group had even gotten a grant from the Indian government to explore how studiously practicing a certain form of yoga could improve a person's eyesight.

But TM, as it is called, is one of the most famous systems of mediation in the world and, its website indicates, it probably doesn't find this study any surprise at all:"The Transcendental Meditation technique, practiced by 5 million people worldwide, is a simple, natural, effortless technique," it declares. "The effectiveness of the Transcendental Meditation program has been validated by over 500 scientific studies at more than 200 independent research institutions in 30 countries."
