"Actually, altho alcohol is haram to injest, the (vast) majority opinion is that it's not a haram substance to touch."   Bro Ahmad

Is that like a different kind of alcohol?  I would think that alcohol is alcohol and smelling, touching it, drinking it, being in the same room with it would be a definate NO NO...yes?

Isn't that kind of liking saying, you can still be in the same room as people drinking alcohol or if you can touch and not drink it, you can serve it as well.  I don't know.  You have to enlighten me on this one Bro.

Is alcohol najs?

I remember hearing a shaykh talk about this last Ramadan.  He said that this issue was debated among the scholars.  That is, whether or not alcohol is najs.  Some scholars were of the opinion that it is najs and thus one has to wash before he can pray if he comes in contact with it.  Other scholars said it was not najs, though haraam to consume.

The shaykh mentioned evidences from both sides, but I only remember the evidence from those who say that it is not najs.  They say that when the ayah came down prohibiting khamr [intoxicants], the ahadith tell us that the City of Madina was flowing with alcohol.  That is, people broke all their vessels which contained alchol on the streets of Madina.  The point to note here is that if it was considered impure, then the streets of Madina would have become impure by the flowing alcohol.  However, the Prophet (saw) never asked the Companions to purify the streets, nor did he criticize them for pouring alcohol on the streets.  This proves that alcohol is haraam to consume.  However, it is not najs.

Based on this the scholars say that, for example, if you find a bottle/can of alcohol on the street or outside your door, you may pick it up and put it in the trash can.

I reiterate though that other scholars have the opposite opinion so the safest approach would be to avoid it.

Wallahu a'lam.

P.S. Serving alcohol is, of course, prohibited based on the authentic hadith of Rasulullah (saw) in which he cursed a person who serves it.

"Trustworthy: Abu Hamza? Since I've gone to the limits of posting my 5 I'll have to ask the question here and post it tomorrow so others can read, but what about being in the same room with alcohol cause that is also forbidden right?"

That would depend on what the alcohol is being used for, whether it's being used for drinking or another purpose such as rubbing alcohol, perfume etc.

Altho as Bro Abu Hamza said, some scholars are of the opinion that its najs so if u followed that opinion it would be best to avoid it. I haven't seen very many scholars say alcohol is najs, but that might just be circumstance.

Pls correct me if I'm wrong about any of that thx.

Today the entire Khutba was about the problems of drinking alcohol.
I was like.. what? ???
Why is he wasting a whole Khutbah on something that we don't even drink?

Or is it a problem in our communities?

There used to be someone my friend's family knew that drank alcohol. I don't mean like one of those stupid punk kids, he was grown and actually prayed and etc. but he kinda of pick and chose what he wanted out of deen. Confronting him directly didn't work, so they asked the khatib to do his khutbah on the evil of drinking alcohol. Addressing the community as a whole is v often better than addressing a single person individually.

Or maybe he just saw someone drinking, thought oh man alcohol is bad stuff, and decided to do a khutbah on it. It's something that would be esp. important for some of the ppl in their teens and early twenties to hear. I wouldn't really call it a wasted khutbah...

In all of the education I have received and 3 years worth of medical, you’d think I’d come up with Sis Fozia’s find.  Have another bebzi Sis.  []  Now there's a situation where I knew it was ok.  Kind of like "medicinal weed"?

Was that sarcasm JustOne?  Cause that was funny.  You had me smiling big since I could not LOL at the moment.  Have a bebzi.   [] I tried to write that down earlier in the chat box for you to read but for some odd reason after sending one chat text to Bro Abu Hamza, I wasn’t able to send anymore.  Strange…. You have to list those things you can do with alcohol if you weren’t being sarcastic about it.  Jazakh…for your response Bro Abu Hamza and your reply Bro Ahmad.

About alcohol, it was always taught to me that alcohol is alcohol whether it’s rubbing alcohol or alcohol in perfume, etc.  We can’t even come near it.  I would put it in the same classification as smoking.  People seem to think that smoking is mukruh when it really is haram.  Cause if you don’t think so then let me know where I can find a cigarette or tobacco product that isn’t harmful to the person smoking it or to the person standing next to the person smoking it.  No where in the Prophet’s (SAW) history does it ever mention him (SAW) smoking or allow smoking because there were smoking products available during his (SAW) time.  However, the Prophet (SAW) did mention that it is haram to put anything in our body that is harmful.  Now this hadith does not specifically list all the things that are harmful to your body BECAUSE it literally means ANYTHING that is harmful to your body from cocaine to smoking to poison to ANYTHING.  And if it could cause death which you know these things could then you are purposely and consciously committing suicide which is also a definite haram.

Maybe I’m confusing najis with something else.  Refresh my memory as to what najis means.

And to Sis Kathy...

At times the Imam would repeat his khutbah from time to time about the same subject and he even did that with Hadith sessions as well which I thought the same as you...why?  or again?

But I also knew a brother who drank "only with his kuffar freinds", but then again he also thought that it was "OK" to make salat in your head...you know imagining praying in your head....then he quite coming to the masjid during Jumua' because he thought that our Msajid was always asking for donations which was following a Catholic/Christain ritual.  I mean I had to cut the last straw somewhere.  You can only try to bring someone back so many times and then it's just hopeless because it's like trying to bring someone back from the dead.  Insha-Allah someone will show him the way back.  I do wonder at times what he's doing or if I did the right thing by just not keeping in touch with him anymore.

Allah (SWT) bless….

uses of alcohol

alcohol has a lot of uses, in medicine, chemistry, physics & industry.

1. local anaesthetic & antiseptic

2. preparation of a number of useful {& not so useful :) } compounds, although I would defend their preparation on the grounds of scientific knowledge

3. cryogenics (producing low temperatures)
_________

Some Muslims (mostly males) in the West do take alcohol, although perhaps they are not in a majority, hence this is a problem.

najs = impure thing, eg. dog's saliva, pork etc.
It breaks your wudhu when u touch it and needs to be washed from your body/clothes before you can pray again.
Khamr and Alcohol

FYI:
Hanafi scholars classify intoxicants and alcohol into two categories:
"Khamr" and intoxicants/alcohol. They base it on the hadith:

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “Khamr (wine) is from these two trees, dates and grapes”. (Sahih Muslim, No. 1985).

In the hanafi school "khamr" is NAJIS but other alcohols are not so you can touch synthetic alcohols and even use perfumes made from synthetic alcohols (although it is advised to avoid them).

What about alcohol used in cough syrups and in homeopathic medicines?

Although in cough syrups its nearly 30-40%, in homeopathic medicine its nearly completely evaporated; or does that make a difference?
Although in cough syrups its nearly 30-40%, in homeopathic medicine its nearly completely evaporated; or does that make a difference?
Whatever is forbidden, is forbidden in small quantities as well. Hence unless alcohol is absolutely essential to save a life, its use is forbidden.

30-40% alcohol cannot be classified as a cough syrup, it is considered a "spirit tonic".

Homeopathic medicine is dispensed as tablets or as liquid. The liquid containd alcohol hence it is forbidden outright. The tablets do not always have alcohol evaporated from them, so if one uses these, one should air these enough to get rid of alcohol.

The best thing is to use medication from the Quran and the Sunnah.

wlm,

i think its important that if someone truly has a medicinal case like this they should ask their imam/scholar.. this is the perfect example of where a person can look this up in a fatwa bank and think that the answer is clear cut. ie alcohol is haram. then they forbid something which shouldn't be and ends up harming a muslim. btw i don't see how alcohol can ever save a person's life on its own ergo being "essential for life", yet we know there are numberous cases where it has been allowed because of the circumstances. so please ask a scholar and give them all the background and conditions of the case.

Afwan, I'm not aware of any differences of opinions with regards to najis breaking one's wudhu'. Though, najis does need to be washed appropriately before salah.

Would you be able to share more of the opinion above?

May be this sounds weird to say but I have heard in a daily radio program called NURUN ALAA DARB where immense scholars such as Ibn baz( the former mufti of Saudi Arabia) and  AL sheikh the present mufti as well as other Scholars answer questions over IFTAA.
Someone asked if it is HARAM (prohibited)to sit with people(non Moslems) drinking alcohol ?
The answer (specifically by sheikh Ibn baz) was, if the intention of being there  with non Moslems drinking alcohol is for the sake of DAWA it is not HARAM to attend such gathering  if this is  the only possibility and method to meet these people
