Miracle foods for your health!

I'd like to begin a series here on miracle foods that are beneficial for your health.

Almonds - the fat from them is monounsaturated.  Try substituting them for another snack that you maybe eating, as studies have shown that eating them can reduce your bad cholesterol (LDL).  A 9 week study showed that the participants of the study, started eating 3 ounces of almonds a day after the 2nd week and saw a dramatic decrease in their total cholesterol, from an average of 235, plummeting to 215.

In upcoming posts I'll be talking about more foods that are good for you.  Feel free to add any of your own.
An apple a day....

Apples contain the ingredient pectin which reduces blood cholesterol.  It also contains flavonoids that help to reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL).

There are several studies I read about where there were significant reductions in the cholesterol levels of people that started to eat more apple.  In one study, a group of healthy men and women started to eat 2 to 3 apples a day for a month.  At the end of the month the cholesterol fell in 80% of the people by an average of 14 percent, one person's cholesterol fell 29 percent.

I know Honey is good for you. Everything about it is good - yet people don't really take advantage of it. However, I would like to hear more about honey than just me saying, "It's good for you!" lol...

Alright take it from here bhaloo.  ;)

Apple: Although low in vitamin C content, it has antioxidants which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

apple seeds also help: prevent or treat cancer

Some very good points brought up by brothers Medo and Timbuktu.  Medo, I guess we'll just have to wait for more details on the benefits of honey.  ;)

But regarding apple seeds, as far as I know apple seeds contain cyanide (though its in a small quantity), but if you eat enough seeds it will kill you.  Here's what one doctor said:

In fact, apple seeds, like the seeds of some other fruits in the rose
family such as peaches and bitter almonds, contain cyanide.  It's part of
the apple's way of protecting its offspring.  The level of cyanide is quite
low, but if you store up a whole lot of apple seds and eat them all at
once, you can ingest enought cyanide to hurt or even kill you.

If you eat apple seeds you will die... because an apple tree will grow in your stomach.... it's true my mother told me so......I knew bitter almond seeds had a cynide content in them, from reading Agatha Christie whodunnits during my misspent youth.

[slm] wow, is it only apple seeds that sprout trees in your stomach?

seriously though, the cyanide bit is convincing enough. No more apple seeds for me.

Some more on honey, and do not forget to open the excel file attachment. There is loads of useful info on honey there, including some beauty tips, although by rights this should go in the Akhwat Corner.

The prophet (saws) loved honey. So, whenever you partake of honey, think about it, & you will be doing a sunnah, & you will get merits for it.

1. Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.603 Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah

I heard the Prophet saying, "If there is any good in your medicines, then it is in a gulp of honey, a cupping operation, or branding (cauterization), but I do not like to be (cauterized) branded."

2. Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.587 Narrated by Jabir bin Abdullah

I heard the Prophet saying, "If there is any healing in your medicines, then it is in cupping, a gulp of honey or branding with fire (cauterization) that suits the ailment, but I don't like to be branded  (cauterized) with fire."

3. Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 4570 Narrated by AbuHurayrah

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone licks honey three mornings every month, he will not be afflicted with any serious trouble. (Ibn Majah and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it.)

4. Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 4571 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud

Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Make use of the two remedies: honey and the Qur'an."
Ibn Majah and Bayhaqi, in Shu'ab al-Iman, transmitted it, Bayhaqi saying the correct view is that it goes no farther back than Ibn Mas'ud.
----
5. It is reported that the prophet used to drink some honey mixed with warm water (just enough warmth to suit you) every morning, before eating anything.

I do not have a reference to it yet.
----
6. Caraway seeds (called Kalwanji in Punjabi, & Kalonji in Urdu) are medicine for everything (Bukhari & Muslim)

proper reference with Hadith number missing here
-----
how to use:

At least half an hour before breakfast:

1. Take 5-11 caraway seeds (odd numbers) , & swallow them with water, without chewing them.

2. warm up half to one cup of water, mix one tablespoon of honey in it, drink it sip by sip, but do not let it get cold. If you like, you can swallow the seeds with this diluted honey.

note: if you cannot get caraway seeds, drink the diluted honey at least.
----
What is the reason behind it?

Honey removes toxic substances from the body. It also develops immunity from those allergens that are found in the honey being used. Hence it is better to use local honey.

----
whooping cough

The best things from this Earth, that are in Jannah are described in the Qur'an as being:

promegnarate, banana, ginger & honey, & the last one I forget at the moment. Everyone of these things gives relief from (or is cure of) whooping cough.

spread dry, powdered ginger on honey, & lick it morning & evening for 7-days. It is a cure for every type of cough.
----
Healing Honey

Moreover, the Holy Kor'an mentions the importance for honey's healing effects, and we have the following from AHadeeth, or from experiments by doctors:

a laxative,
as a cure for diarrhea,
vomiting,
upset stomach,
coughs,
throat maladies,
to agglutinate wounds,
for eye diseases,
blisters,
stops itching from insect bites,
cleans sores and ulcers of the lips,
heals carbuncles and running sores,
effective in clearing wounds of bacterial infection,
a cure for malnutrition,
old age,
insanity,
nerve disorders,
colds and flu infections,
hangovers,
can be used as an antiseptic in any cavity in the human body.

Honey is predigested. When eaten, honey's simple sugars are absorbed directly into your body's bloodstream for instant energy. Honey contains something of every nutrient required to maintain good health.

OK, I mentioned hangover above. This does not in any way condone having anything that causes hangovers. :)

Blueberries!  Loaded with antioxidants.  Prevailing wisdom says blueberries are the top super food. I like blueberry juice and frozen blueberries with a bit of cream.  Also, try this smoothie:

blueberries
banana
yogurt
bit of milk for smoothness
peanut butter
wheat germ
touch of vanilla or honey if you choose.

Whir it all up to taste.  Excellent.

Bros!!!  Sis'!!!!  I can't believe you didn't mention dates (the ones you eat...u know the subject of this thread).   Dates.  When a baby is born, it is sunnah to feed him/her a piece of date.  Wasn't Prophet Isa (Alayhissalaam) feed dates when he just came out into the world?

Apple seeds?  People actually ate them?  :o  That's the first I've heard.  I've always choked on them as well as other seeds.  Which there is a story attached to it on another thread.  "Stupid things stupid kids do"

But cyanide?   :o  Ehhh....it's all natural.  Helps build your immune system right?  ;)

Fish is also good for you.  Do we really have to list why or can we just say so because that's what Mom said?  I also prefer beef...actually lamb.  I looooovvvveeee lamb.

Some roots and barks of trees from back home actually heals.  Though the taste is quite something else....OMG....something else.  I'll have to do more research to let you know which ones.  But we drink it like tea except no sugar or milk.

Durian aka the fruit that ‘tastes like heaven and smells like hell’ aka the world's first weapon of mass destruction and naturally created that way. (2 have died this month during its consumption.)

The infamous tropical fruit, banned in hotels and public transportation because of its foul odor, but craved by many who have become accustomed to it like me (but only after my second born), eating some will give you bowel breath for hours.  It is "like eating custard in a sewer."
Once the fruit is opened be sure not to confuse it with a possible gas leak in the stove!
Below is a picture of the world’s most naturally buttery creamy sweet tasting yet deadliest fruit ever known to man.  Only the bravest would dare…..if they can get it open without losing their fingers and/or thumbs.

http://www.ghouse.com/daniel/durian/durian12.html

My hands are still in tact, but I’ve never tried to open it again after almost losing 3 of my fingers.  When I first saw this fruit I was like OMG!  Then when I was first introduced to the smell I was like OH MY GAWD!!!  That is just so wrong!  Then when I first dared to taste it, I did courageously and I swore my soul jumped out of my skin because that’s what it felt like but then when it returned to my body, I felt like the healthiest person alive.  My nostrils were clear, I felt the length of my esophagous, fresh pure oxygen in my lungs, and my mind was free of thought.  (Man…I think I should go get one today.)

However, the ministry advised eating no more than two segments of durian a day, warning that the fruit's calorie content posed a threat to people with high blood pressure, heart conditions and diabetes.

Muslim, Timbuktu, great job on the honey posts.

Siddiqui, beef is good for you?  I thought red meats weren't?  BTW: do you have any favorite cuts? i.e. t-bone, ribeye, porterhouse, etc?

Sparrow: Excellent point, blueberry are a great antioxidant, and I have them as smoothies as well, your recipe looks good.

Trustworthy: good points about dates, but what's this other fruit you are talking about, I don't think I have seen it here in the US?

yep, bro bhaloo, chocolate is good. :)

It is good because something as tasty and as habit forming just cannot be bad.

It comes from cocoa beans, which we all know is a natural product

It also contains milk, another natural product

Oh, yes, how could I forget, it contains a lot of sugar, which we know comes from sugarcane or beetroot, both natural products,

so by eating chocolate you are having three natural products.

If that isn't a balanced diet, I don't know what a balanced diet is.

From my childhood, I have used chocolate as my diet.

At every outing to the market, I would buy a quarter to half a pound of choclates, and it would be gone by the time I reached home. At 59, I am still alive and kicking.

More than what I can say for many of my friends who were deprived of this nourishing diet by their parents.

This is practical proof that chocolate is good for you.

Don't forget to send me my share whenever you buy chocolate. :)

I loooooovvvve chocolate.  BUT I'm a chocolate sectis (if that's even a word) anyways, I don't like white or dark, I just looooovvvveee brown aka milk chocolate.

But about the durian....you can find it in season during this time as a fresh fruit in an Asian food store.  You have to know how to select the good or else you'll regret it and then never try another again.  If it's not in season, you can find it in the freezer section which is already out of it's shell for you, but I don't like them frozen.  Totally different taste.  Smells different too.

BUT man!!!  Is it ever delicious once you get pass the smell.  At first, I thought it tasted like garlic then I tried it again and was like drooling......this is soooooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooooooood.  You should really try it and let me know.  I'd love to hear your first experience.  It is an acquired taste.  You either hate it or love at first bite if you can get pass the smell.

I don't think it's really that bad.  Then again, I'm now used to it and love the dang fruit.  BUT I can only handle a few segments.  Never been able to eat an entire one at one sitting.  I don't think you should.  Actually, don't.  PLease don't.  Only eat a few so that I can hear about your first experience.

If you can't find it, let me know and may be I can ship one to you express mail if the post don't think it's a bomb or something.   8)

OK.

Timbuktu, are you still buying a 1/4 to 1/2 pound of chocolate?  That's amazing.

Br. Bhaloo yes that's the fruit Sr Trustworthy is talking about. I believe it's called Jack fruit over here, and yes you can buy it in England, my father has stunk out the entire hourse on a couple of occasion due to this fruit. But as only my parents eat the stuff, he's given up trying to refine our palates and let us eat the run of the mill nice smelling fruit.

OK Turmeric is good for you, and so is ginger, both have anti inflammatory properties and the former is a natural antibiotic....(do herbs and spices count as foods)??? Ginger is really good for arthritis, you can make compresses and it does help reduce arthritic inflammation...

bhaloo said:
Timbuktu, are you still buying a 1/4 to 1/2 pound of chocolate?  That's amazing
Until a few months ago, I was eating chocolate in slightly less amounts, but unfortunately my chocolate consumption has been way down in the last few months. The first thought was this is due to old age having crept up on me, but on second thoughts I decided not to confuse effect with cause, so the correct position is that my old age has come because I am taking less chocolate.

Having diagnosed the cause, I must rush to rectify the situation. :)

bro bhaloo
Its called, amaroot in Urdu
do you mean amrood: ÇãÑæÏ
that is guava, and that doesn't smell foul.

I still think it is kathal, and as it grows in Bengal (and probably in Bihar), it might also do so in regions South East of Bengal, ie: Thailand, Malaysia, Combodia, Vietnam, Indonesia,

and yes, the fruit trustworthy described does like Jack Fruit, but that isn't amrood.

and here is the info on JackFruit

Medicinal Uses: The Chinese consider jackfruit pulp and seeds tonic, cooling and nutritious, and to be "useful in overcoming the influence of alcohol on the system." The seed starch is given to relieve biliousness and the roasted seeds are regarded as aphrodisiac. The ash of jackfruit leaves, burned with corn and coconut shells, is used alone or mixed with ckconut oil to heal ulcers. The dried latex yields artostenone, convertible to artosterone, a compound with marked androgenic action. Mixed with vinegar, the latex promotes healing of abscesses, snakebite and glandular swellings. The root is a remedy for skin diseases and asthma. An extract of the root is taken in cases of fever and diarrhea. The bark is made into poultices. Heated leaves are placed on wounds. The wood has a sedative property; its pith is said to produce abortion.

Come on...I can't be the only Madinan here who's tried durian.  Someone else try it and let me know.  Bro Timbuktu? "I remember avoiding it all my life but once." Once what?  What happened?

assalaamu alaikum

I'm surprised that no one mentioned carrots - they say its good for your eyes.

But thats actually incorrect, and the story behind it is interesting.

During WWII the British invented Radar and were now able to detect German planes from a long, long distance away. But Radar was a new invention and they wanted to keep its existence secret. So when people got curious as to how come the British pilots were becoming so good at detecting German raids and shooting German planes in the dark, the top brass spread some disinfo saying that the pilots were fed carrots and it improved their eyesight :)

[slm]...

I don't Bro MIT about that story, but carrots have some kind of vitamin or minerals that is actually good for your eyes.  True story....i used to have 20/20 vision in both eyes then i started to go slightly blurr and the optometrist gave me these huge red glasses....when i say huge, it's not an exaggeration so I asked him what i can do to improve my eyesight and he said, wear these glasses.  dumb frea*.  i swear, i never ask my questions right.  so i read somewhere that carrots are good for the eyes and so i strated to eat lots and lots of them even in school that people thought i liked carrots so much everyone would give me their carrots for lunch.

Anyways....long story short, i no longer needed glasses anymore.  But then as i got older i quit eating carrots because i became very picky about it.  Certain carrots taste differently.  So I would stop eating carrots if it didn't taste sweet which lead to not eating carrots and now i am near sided and need to wear glasses, but i don't cause i still can see.
