Once, a man saw a beautiful woman walking in the market place and, awe-struck at her beauty, he fell immediately in love.

He began to chase after her, trampling through the mud to try to reach her some distance away.

"Sister.." he cried, "sister!"

Finally he came close to her, and when she turned her elegant face to appraise him, he breathlessly confessed: "You are the most beautiful and graceful woman I've ever seen. Would you accept me if I asked for your hand in marriage?"

She paused, and then pointing to a woman behind him, said, "Well, my sister is more beautiful than I am.."

He turned to see. "Where?"

And she punched him, right in the nose. He sank into the mud, dizzy and confused, and cried out, "Why? Why?"

She said: "Because the true lover never turns away from their beloved."

May you be a true lover of the One who deserves your full focus and attention.

What happened to all Imam Zaid's sound effects? He's got a ton of em. It's doubtfull that he related this story without some sort of sound effects, unless it was written instead of spoken  :P.

Anyways I'm just being picky...

It is a common hikayat (a story meant to instruct but not necessarily authentic) in sufi literature, and the way I have known it has been slightly different...

The version I read didn't talk about love at first sight but rather a lover so enraptured with love that he was left incapable of doing anything useful... the fame of his yearning and love grew strong, and one day the beautiful girl approached him ... and in the end she didn't punch him physically but rather stung him with:
"you lie, the lover never beholds another but the beloved"

The point being that if a beautiful woman can demand such devotion from a man, how much devotion must be due to Allah, the Sublime, The Merciful, the Loving!

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

Yes, Imam Zaid is soooo funny when he is animated.  That's one of the things I love about him as a teacher; he is brilliant, masha'Allah, but he can always take it down to your level.

During a Q&A portion of the program, someone asked for techniques to improve the quality of their salah.  One of the things he suggested was to just slow down! since we zoom through our prayer:  and then he started making car engine noises.., imitating how fast we rush though the salah.  it was sooo funny, I just can't describe it.. even sidi hamza, who was sitting next to him on stage, couldn't stop laughing.

may Allah increase him in his ability to awaken people's hearts through his speaking and his light heartedness at times :)

interesting.. I think the punch just adds a little something more to the story though, don't you? :)
