slm,

k i was reading this last night and i was struck by it:

Wa laa tazaw-wat-tu qabla al-mawti naafila(t)an
Wa lam uSalli siwaa farDin wa lam aSumi

31) And I made no provisions before death of voluntary (nafl) worship.

32) And I did not perform salaat nor did I fast except what was obligatory.

31. Here Allamah Busairi explains that when a person travels he makes preparations for his Journey. Now very soon is going to embark on the Journey to the hereafter and he has made no preparation for it. He did not engage himself in any voluntary acts of worship.

32. Here Allamah Busairi shows his sincere repentance and humility by saying that he was lax in his voluntary devotions and only did what was obligatory on him, which is grossly insufficient.

nowadays we seem so proud that we are doing the obligatory and here is someone who is ashamed that they are only doing the obligatory!!
of interest...

more to ponder...

1) I transgressed the sunnat of him (Nabi, Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) who passed the night (in ibaadat).

2) Until his feet complained of injury due to being swollen.

3) And he tied and folded, on account of hunger, around his stomach

4) A stone beneath which is his delicate skin.

5) And high mountains of gold (tried to) tempt him.

6) Towards it, but he was (completely) disinclined due to his high courage.

7) His piety increased inspite of his need.

notes:
1. Allamah Busairi says that he was neglectful in following the sunnat of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. The aim of this line Is to show the praise and perfection of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. It was the sunnat of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam to spend the nights in the worship of Allah Ta'aala.

2. Allamah Busairi is showing the excellence and length of the salaat of our beloved Rasul the nights. Such exerted Ibaadat was made by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam that due to standing in prayer his blessed feet would become swollen. Considering the fact that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi was sinless and makes it apparent to us as to what devotion and exertion Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhl Wasallam had when making Ibaadat.

3. Even though being the most beloved of Allah Ta 'aala, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam underwent enormous difficulties and hardships for the sake of deen. So much so, that sometimes for days, weeks, and even for months no proper food apart from dates and water would enter his stomach. Due to this extreme hunger Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam would tie a stone, sometimes two stones around his stomach.

4. This is how Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam underwent hardship. By placing stones to remove the pangs of hunger and to keep him erect. Allamah Busairi emphasises the severity of hunger and hardship by mentioning that stones were placed on the body which is most delicate skin and part of the stomach.

5. Allamah Busairi refers to an occasion when due to the pangs of hunger by Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. Jibraeel A.S. came down and told him Allah Ta'aala would turn the mountains of Madlnah into gold for him, if he so desired, but Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam declined this offer.

6. Although such high temptations were placed before Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhl Wasallam, he was not inclined towards them in the least, due to his obedience, courage, love for poverty and strong will power. Mountains of gold held no attraction in his eyes.

7. Poverty normally leads a person to be ungrateful (kufr), yet Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam chose a life of poverty. With poverty his piety increased even more.
