Swimming?

I reverted to Islam about a month ago so I am still learning, but I have one question that I need sisters to answer. I live in a small town with no mosque or any other resources so it is hard for me to get help from anyone. My question is that I love to swim in the summer. I have a pool in my yard, but how is it possible to swim and be covered? My pool is in view of other houses not in the country by itself. Has anyone else encountered this and what did you do? Do I just have to give up swimming altogether?

slm,

We love swimming too!!! We have one friend who's aunt has a pool and we go often during the summer. They have a nice fence all the way around and some shading trees on the edges so no one can see in.

I suggest you get a fence built or something that will give you some privacy. You could try night swimming with someone? I don't know if the neighbors would be able to see you?

It's not a good idea to swim while all covered.. just cover what u need to cover in front of other women... ie a swimsuit with a t shirt over it that goes to the knees and build some fences!!

I recently went swimming at an outdoor public pool in a jilbab and hijab....the extra drag gives you a better workout....hehehe.....When I was in Tunis we would all cover. At the beaches (not touristy) there wasn't a bathing suit in site.... Go ahead and cover.
May Allah make it easy for you...

Ummmmm you might drown though which would be a bit silly just to get that extra work out.... I prefer Sr. Jannah's idea.
Also keep a towel near the end where you will come out and throw that around you once you're out of the pool. You can't see much when your underwater anyways.

this might be a silly idea, but it won't hurt to try....if your pool is not really big, try to get one of those big tents that people set up in their back yards and ppl sit under.....than put a light fabric to cover the bottom part and only leave open the part that is facing your house and nobody can see from so you can get in and out. the best part is you wont even have to worry about getting sunburned....i hate getting sunburned!!!!!!!!

Common, u're not gonna drown if u swim in a jibab.
Its the dont thing in many parts of the Middle East.
resistance and choking

i'm saying, wouldnt all that extra resistence (with a jilbab etc on) be bad for you..what if you like accidentally choke on all the excess material or like blind yourself and run into the side of the pool or something? I dont mean to play devils advocate but there is a reason why people swim with less material on than not?? isnt there?

just take caution in what you wear..perhaps if you must wear plenty clothes keep it light (nylon jogging pants perhaps and a tee shirt?

good luck with that..and I do second that tent over the pool thing:)

wlm,

well...why swim with a jilbab??? is there someone watching or something?? if there is u just shouldn't go cause its not like the jilbab is gonna protect ur awrah... wet clothes stick to u like a second skin so there's really no point in that... and yeah i'd agree that it would cause more problems... with all that stuff pulling u down...

so long t-shirt - short capri/spandex type pants -- bathing suit underneath works well enough...

I lurrrvveeee swimming.  Where I am at its near impossible to get a private pool.  So this is what me and other mer-muslimahs do.  Wearing long t-shirts is not an option because t-shirts cling to the body (wet t-shirt competition..geddit?). So, we buy the "halal" swimming attire.  Its semi-diving swimsuit where its turtleneck and long-sleeved made of aqua-friendly material.  They dont cling to your body when wet. We then pair it with swimmer's tights (umm naturally we buy 2 sizes bigger then not so clingy). We top it off with a thin cotton scarf we tie ala pirate but covering the neck (u gotta be imaginative cos i dunno how to describe it).

Tadaaaaa !!! Fully covered with no extra danger to the swimming mer-muslimah  8)

Cost of swimming top and tights..about S$120 ie US$70.

Hope that helps.
