When you're leaving home to study medicine in a place thats lies across the ocean....

...how do you go about packing your life into two suitcases?

Where do you start? What do you take? What do you leave behind?

Depends on where you're going...but I guess that is implied in your question.

It's funny how we're attached to things.  I had to make pretty much the same decisions last year in May.  I left behind so much...gave some away, threw some away, put it in boxes and left the rest in some Aunty's basement.

I don't know what to tell you...take some nice clothes, but not too many, because you know you'll be wearing different stuff there ;)  Definitely take good socks, and lots of nice shoes.  I also brought some of my most important books, a closet organizer (which took up half of one of my suitcases...couldn't part with it, though).  I bought lots of paper (comfort item), and my jump rope (good way to keep in shape, even when you can't go out for a run).  I brought my own incredible supply of body wash, because you can get shampoo anywhere...but bodywash is more rare.

That was pretty much it...I think the rest of my suitcases were filled with stuff my mom didn't want me to throw/give away.

The only thing I regret not making room for is the rest of my textbooks.  I only brought two, and my sister brought two more....but I had an entire library, and I think about my books often...I hope they aren't going moldy :)

Good luck with med school, inshaAllah  :)

Wasalaam.

A year and a half ago, I packed my life and my husbands life into four suitcases, and we traveled, left our home, our place, in order for my husband to study medicine.

We have just returned home after a year and a half.

Sister, it is not easy. It is far from easy. To leave to live in a foreign country, for whatever span of time.

Take into consideration of course, where are you going? What is this place like? Do your reseaqrch, down to the details. Knowledge is power. That is what helped me...I researched and telephoned, and read. And still I was not prepared enough. I'd love to help you in anyway I can though since I found no one to help me and know what it is like to not know.

Anyway sister, post again if you have any specific questions.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

anything you haven't worn in the last year, leave behind.  don't bring clothes 'you think you might wear'.  bring the clothes you *do* wear. don't bring more than one or two super fancy outfits (wedding-style).

if you have a lot of photo albums -- go through them and just take a handful of pictures that you really cherish with you.  same with letters, greeting-cards, etc.

don't bring too many decorative items (frames, etc)..  I'm sure you'll want to shop at your new destination and buy things for your place there.

don't bring personal items unless they do not have them in the place you're moving to.  (toothbrush, shampoo, hair stuff, etc. even most make-up, with the exception of one or two items you really love)  because you can always buy them there.

a lot of times we pack things because of their sentimental value to us, not because of their practical use.  be brave and leave those things behind :)  they'll be there when you get back, and you'll have plenty of new items to add to the collection.

salaam,

7 :)
