Giving from what you have

alsalamu alaykum wa rhmat Ullahi wa barakatuh,

Today at jum'a khutbah, the imam was discussing reactions to anger. He spoke of a story about Eesa ibn Maryam (Jesus) 'alayhim alsalam, that stood out for me. It forces you to be introspective.

The story basically said that one time, Eesa ('alayhi ilsalam) was with his disciples and they passed by a group of jews. The jews were throwing harsh words at him ('alayhi ilsalam), just plain evil speech. So, Eesa ('alayhi ilsalam) replied with words of khayr and goodness. His disciples were confused and asked him ('alayhi ilsalam), 'they speak to you in an evil manner and yet you answer them in a good way?' Eesa ('alayhi ilsalam) 's answer was that, 'everybody gives (infaq) of what he has; they have harshness, so that is what they gave; i have goodness and so that is what i gave'.

I just wanted to share this in the Naseeha corner because it made me stop and think deeply. How do i react when someone treats me in a bad way, or speaks ill of me? Do i defend myself? Do i return the insult? Or do i say salam, seeking Allah ta'ala's pleasure? Whatever my reaction is, its a reflection of what i have let settle inside of me - khayr or sharr. Subhan Allah, what shows in my actions tells me what is inside of me. Makes me want to think 10 times before reacting to anything

May Allah ta'ala increase us all in goodness and allow it to become deeply rooted in our hearts and flourish through our actions. Ameen
