| [slm] to Karachi for the wedding of my nephews. One yesterday (22nd June), and the other will be tomorrow. It is nice to be visiting family, presided over by my mother (how old is she, can you guess). And my sole surviving uncle (paternal) came to "prepare" the groom. He did the same for me, too, 26 years ago. :) And the food at the weddings and other functions in my clan is simply delicious. :) Unfortunately, this type is unlikely at my son's wedding which will take place at Islamabad. It is hot and humid here. No way to live without the air-conditioning. I wonder how I managed in the days when we didn't have air-conditioning. |

| [slm] Totally feel your pain on that one. Karachi rox when it comes to weddings and phood. (I know the Lahoris are going to kill me for saying this, buttttt....) Karachi has the best food EVER! I did find a place in the ISB where they sell decent sheermaal, alhamdulillah. I don't know what would happen if I ended up getting married in this city. I would be like so depressed, I think. None of my family would come for the wedding. They'd be like "islamabad? dude forget that! i'ma go kick it at Tariq Road." (ok ok so it wouldn't be that bad)...and the sheermaal guy would have a tall order to fill, coz what's a wedding without sheermaal?!! When's your son's wedding? And yeah my parents were in the KHI last week for a wedding too...they said it was mad hot. And it's so hot in ISB right now, that anything hotter is unimaginable!! Hope you had phun! Wasalaam. |

| Assalamo elikuim JustOne are you talking about sheermal from Dehli Kali Muslim restaurrant off of Tariq Road ? Beside other things I miss sheermal a lot. My husband think I am crazy to ask him to bring sheermal for me whenever he goes there :) And ofcourse Karachi weddings are the best :) Wasalam tq PS:Somebody told me that dawn bread is also making sheermal which is available in US and Canada. I have tried almost all the Pakistani stores in Philly but couldnt find any :( |

| [slm] Oh my, Islamabad 46 , Jacobabad 51, (max 52) here is food for thought: do you know the difference between sheermaal baqirkhani taftaan bey cheentey ki roti On a semi-related topic, I annoyed someone yesterday. He asked to call him when there are enough people in the gathering so that he can come late and not have to wait for long. Then I thought over it, and realised that I do have a tendency to annoy people at times. This tendency has nothing to do with others, but it has to do with me not wanting to think about the issue at hand. Perhaps because I am lazy, there are times I do not want to answer a question in a straight manner as thta would require some effort on my part, so I say something which may be construed as rude. OK, perhaps it is rude. I did that yesterday, and that too to my "joru ka bhai" - the brother of my wife. There is a saying: "saaree khudai ek taraf joru ka bhai ek taraf" All of Allah's creation on one side, (but I will support) my brother in law who is on the other side Only I have done the opposite this repentence isn't because it is the joru ka bhai whom I have so slighted (and I fear the joru when she gets to hear of this), but it is because I have been brusque, or even abrasive, to members of this board as well. I wish there was some way to make amends, or to correct this tendency. Anyway you know my abrasiveness isn't selective. |

| [slm] Gosh! How is that related to Karachi? Don't worry...it's all cool when it comes to family :) So I know the difference between taftaan and sheermaal, but I've never heard of the other two. And you're right...punjabi saudagran people make good food. (Yes I read that part before you deleted it). My oldest friend who is now somewhere in Hick Town, Ohio is from that ethnicity....and man...do those people love their food or WHAT? It's delicious..mmMMmm... Wasalaam. |

| [slm] All these are kneaded with milk. The difference is in the thickness, the amount of ghee on it and whether perforated or not; and of course, the taste. A baqirkhani is a quarter inch thick, and has perforations done with a multipointe knife-tool at maximum of one cm intervals. It used to be thicker in old times, and is thinner these days. You find naan like that in ISB, and you even find baqirkhani there, but it is not the real thing. The real baqirkhani is available only at Karachi. It has ghee plastered over it, and that makes it last longer. Baqirkahni is what is exported to my house from Karachi, and my wife and children relish it. When the baqirkhani is first prepared, without the ghee, it is hot and fresh and very tasty. So baqirkahni without the ghee is called "bey cheentey ki roti". Because the hot, fresh roti does not contain ghee and is eaten with very spicy Qorma, one could eat loads and loads. These days, alas, my appetite isn't what it used to be. In recent years, with many falling victim to diseases like high blood pressure, and advised to avoid beef and the like, the Saudagraan have invented a new dish which is seekh kabob made from ground chicken. It is available at Riad Masjid, Delhi Mercantile Cooperative Housing Society. And what did I eat at home: Sangri salan (Sangri, I doubt that anyone other than dilliwalas know what it is, although it grows wild on the trees lining the streets of Karachi). Chuqandar (beetroot) salan. Maash ki daal with fried green chillies. with of course generous helpings of mango milk shake; and the milk shake includes solid pieces of mango. :) The bhujiyas and salans at my mother's are unbeatable, even though my mother and sisters are no longer in the kitchen. But they have trained a housekeeper and she cooks the loveliest food now. |

Now the only good place at Karachi (that I know) are my mom's and one of my brothers, whose wife is our cousin. :) Actually, we are not dine-outers. Mom laid a strict rule for us - we had to be in by Maghrib, and if we are busy, we have to tell mom that we will be late. But I will ask my siblings what places are in. I guess Bundu Khan's kebabs (the real Bundu Khan) would be one of them. Places like Burns and Frere Roads, Delhi Mercantile Society and Delhi Colony (at Gizri), would house the dilliwala specialities, I guess. Islamabad is hot and dry. 47 Celsius :( |

| [slm] Karachi has loads of good food! My all time favorite when I was there, Barbque Tonight in Clifton! The chiken satay and kabuli pulao is amazing! On Boat Basin you can find tons of food, but there was this one place (can't remember the name) that had the BEST afghani korma. There is also Chinatown in Clifton which is nice. Does any one know any nice Pakistani places to eat in Dubai? I've tried Karachi Darbar and it just seems bland to me. [wlm] :-) Dazed |

| [slm] Gosh. My food list! Where did it go!! Oh heh...I never got around to making it. BBQ tonight is AWESOME in Karachi. And no, the spinoff in Toronto doesn't even come CLOSE. I'm a big fan of the Okra Grill...my family isn't too big on it, but it has a very nice ambience. It's all seafood, it's catered specifically for businesspeople because under 12s are not allowed (thank goodness the little one's real tall, mashaAllah). They also make killer calamari sandwiches, yum yum yummmmie. (location: Zamzama) Okay then there's that Thai restaurant on Zamzama as well...that place is amazing. It's authentic Thai food, which is kind of cool in Pakistan, because everyone has to put like haldi in their food or something, and they don't. Mmmmmmm okay so I can't think right now...but my Karachi experience is NOT limited to Zamzama, Clifton (can we say GULF), Boat Basin, Defence (Khadda market woohoo)...I actually do spend more time in the North, and there's some fantabulous places to eat out there as well. But it's less safe, and you shouldn't leave the house unless you're covered head to toe or something...so the South side is more fun, because security is less of an issue. Dazed...lemme ask my bro...he lives out in Dubai...Although I doubt they go out to eat desi food, because my bhab's is a good cook, mashaAllah. I really should not come online in such intense heat. It makes my fingers go funky, they end up typing weird things on their very own. Wow. (JustOne..hush.) Wasalaam. |

| [slm] i've been to bbq tonight, and it was ok, i hear that its gone through quite a bit of expansion. what i wanted to know about were the places in zamzama? i've been to copper kettle and have had their caked alaska, what about other places? |
