Anonymous

does anyone have any ideas of what one teen can do over the summer? apart from
taking classes?
i don't really have the privilege of going anywhere i want..since i can't drive yet.

i have a feeling that i am going to be really bored this summer since i am not taking any
classes(forgot to sign up)
what are good ways of spending time?
if you had 2 months of leisure, how would you spend it?
thanks.

Salams,

As for me, I'm going to summerschool and volunteering. As for you, get a job! No, really, why don't you? It's fun (unless it was KFC that you were working at!). And you get money with working as well.

If your not planning to get a job, what I suggest you can do is go to the beach. Have fun with your siblings/family members. Take a dive!

What about bike riding? Bike riding is good. Hmm.. books. Nah. lol..

That's all I can think of now. :)

Wasalam.

Maybe books were a bad idea...I should take my own advice and start reading them.

Learn how to cook!  It's so fun, and it's like art, only you get to eat it.

Wasalaam.

Some nice ideas, chocolate! I have an extended summer holiday this year, so inshAllaah, I plan on catching up with my hifz, reading books [i picked up 'the idiot's guide to verbal defence'..it looked interesting at Borders...gonna get 'The Count of Monte Cristo' from the library...and gonna pop into some Islamic bookshops to get loadza books and tapes, inshAllaah].

I'm also gonna:

Watch some films I've had a craving to watch during my exams.

Catch up with old friends.

Learn to cook (can't cook to save my life)..maybe learn to sew properly, too.

Be more active [http://www.cageprisoners.com/page.php?id=3], socially-Islamically (just made that word up).
By the way, how in the world do I add a hyperlink thingy to a word?

Like yourself, anonymous, all the classes are too far and its also too late to join many of them. But inshAllaah, I plan on checking out a few Arabic classes for next year and see if there's anything goin on at the Mosque...I should be able to drive there myself by the next academic year, inshAllaah  :-X

Take care and make sure you don't waste your summer!

Was-salaamu 'alaykum.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

you can start memorizing the whole Qur'an :)

it sounds like such a HUGE and overwhelming task, right?  one of those faraway dreams that may never come true.

*but* if you take it a piece at a time, it may one day become a reality.

here in houston, there are a lot of hifz (Qur'an memorization) programs that take place during the summer (and throughout the year! that's one positive of living in houston - there are a lot of opportunities to learn and memorize the Quran). basically the program is about 3-4 hours a day, *everyday*, that includes time for memorization and review and consultation with the teacher.. and by the end of the summer, it's unbelievable how much Qur'an you can have memorized.

one sister I know started the program just a few weeks ago, and she already has the first juz' of Suratul Baqarah memorized!  one whole Juz'!  I was so amazed and sad that I didn't take advantage of the same opportunity :(  and she's like a very normal, cool person :)  she's not someone who is super serious, which I think, in my mind, is what's associated with someone in a Quran memorization program.

it sounds like a lot, but I think you should give yourself a goal for the end of the summer: "I want to memorize all of Juz 'Amma really well", or "I want to memorize Suratul Kahf", or if you are more dedicated to the task, "I'll memorize for two hours everyday after Fajr" and you will be AMAZED how much blessing Allah puts into your efforts and how much you can accomplish.

one of the things I regret so much about my college and highschool years is how I wasted so much of my vacation time :(  when I think back about how much I could have accomplished during that free time, I really feel like there were so many missed opportunities.

you don't have to travel anywhere to see new things.. just take the time to explore your self, your heart, your soul, and work on your connection to Allah and improving yourself, and you can take these blessed, beautiful days to the greatest heights.

The Prophet [saw] said, take advantage of five before five -- and among them were:  'take advantage of your youth before your old age' and 'take advantage of your free time before you become occupied with other things'.

soo.. go for it :)  may Allah bless you and make the days of summer long, sweet, and fruitful :)

salaam,

bittersweet sister 7, reminiscing on her days of youth.

Wow! Sister 7, that's a wonderful idea. Wish I could find some time for that...
Insha-Allah, someday I will. Soon enough!
