Surgeons' hijabs backed

Hospitals should provide a new range of sterile headwear to allow doctors to observe religious traditions without risking the spread of MRSA and other infections, the BMA decided yesterday.
They should include "theatre hijabs" made from material that could be easily sterilised, allowing Muslim women doctors to cover their faces during an operation and discard the garment afterwards. Sterile turbans and headwear suitable for the followers of other religious faiths should also be available, the association's conference in Manchester said.

Sabrina Talukdar, 21, a medical student at St Andrews University, said some Muslim women experienced problems when observing or assisting in surgery and had been told to remove their hijabs, even if they had put on a clean one.
"The 'theatre hijab' would simply be a square piece of sterile theatre cloth, secured with pins, which can be worn in conjunction with a surgical mask for those only wanting to expose their eyes."

The conference also called on the media to stop giving the public unrealistic expectations of doctors' ability to bring patients back to life, raised by TV dramas such as Casualty and ER.

Abdullah's own comments:
Loads of female Muslim doctors have been bared from surgery because of the sterile hijab/Niqab issue. this new rule will result in More Muslim women opting for Surgery instead of med. currently there are much more Muslim doctors in the UK then the % of Muslim population. So this will not have an affect on recruiting more, it will only affect where the famale Muslims choose to work. at present female Muslims Hijabis/Niqabis have a reputation of being GPs instead on surgians, even though supporters of Muslim women doctors would say they are needed as gynocologists. By providing sterile Niqabs, Muslim women will be able to become gynocologists. Presently, Gynocology in the UK is male dominated, this new rule might start to change this. but it will take a long time, because it takes 9 years for a graduated Doctor to become a gynocologist, for a Muslim women it will probably take double that, due to her having to work part time due to family commitments.
So dont start smiling, because it wont be you who will be treated by one of these niqabi surgions, but if you get married now, give birth to a girl next year, who gets married at 16, and gives birth at 17, it may be one of these new niqab wearing gynocologist who treat her!!!
