1. Is it necessary to wear a jilbab?
2. Does the school dress code not conform to Islamic standard of modesty?

If that is so, like if the dress code shows legs then, yes you have to wear a jilbab to school, esspecially since it is a mixed one.

Shouldn't cause a fall in grades though, unless you are very sensitive to other people's opinions, which you shouldn't be, in matters of the deen.

There are many things in life, and many occasions when you will have to do what is right without worrying about what others will say.

Ask yourself these questions:

3. What will Allah (swt) say to me on the Day of Judgement?
4. Will I qualify for intercession by the prophet [saw]?

If you wear a jilbab, or do something that is differnet from the majority, or abstain from something that the majority does, like drinks or dating, you will feel the pressure, and this pressure may be overt like your friends saying you are starnge or something, but you have to do what is right despite the pressure.

As salam alaikum sister Amber,
I don't think it's neccessary for you to wear a jilbab in particular. If you feel more comfortable you can dress in jeans with long sleeved shirts where long skirts, khaki pants, dresses. I think as long as you are being modest you can still be in style and dress in a western style if that's what suits you. Are you planning on wearing hijab too?
About two years ago (when I wasn't yet covering) my aunt was talking about how she really loves the jilbab. She used to dress in more western type clothing (long skirts and shirts etc) but she found that the jilbab was definetley for her. I thought "there's no way I am going to dress like that I like my clothing and as long as I am being covered it's okay." .....Well, about 1 1/2 months ago I put on the hijab. I didn't really have very many permissible clothing, but I was given quite a few jilbabs that I never really wore. I started to wear them, reluctantly, and guess what I love the jilbab. I have always been a pant girl myself, but now I feel really beautiful. I am not concieted or anything but I feel like a princess most days. The old type of princess I mean. I really think Allah put this in my heart so that I wouldn't care what others thought/think of me. I am very hyper-sensitive to what others think, but when it comes to hijab I have a lot of self esteem. ALLAHU AKBAR!!
Please don't worry if your friends leave you, if they do they weren't really your friends anyways!! and who wants friends like that? I suggest you read the profile on Amina Assilimi at www.famousmuslims.com (I think that's the website.) Anyways her story is very inspirational!!!

Rubbi Mark
May Allah make the decision easy for you!
Salam alaikum

Sister, as far as I understand Jilbaab is fard. You may want to look at the evidences for this (see below).

I recall that I just used to wear the khimaar (headcovering) until a sister asked me ...did you know it is fard to wear jilbaab? SubhanAllah...I did not even know. I thought...this is the opinion of the sister, but couldn't help thinking...what if she is right.... I researched the issue and after enquiring with scholars realised it was a duty. Alhamdolillah, I do not regret it.

In the Quran, Surah al-Ahzab ayah 59 (33:59) says:

O Prophet! Say to your wives and your daughters and the women of the faithful to draw their JALABIB close around them; that is better that they will be recognized and not annoyed. And God is ever Forgiving, Gentle.

This ayah states a command for Muslim women to wear a garment which Allah SWT has called "jilbab".

Beyond this, the hadiths record how the sahabiyat (rAa) went about obeying Surah al-Ahzab ayah 59 when it was revealed:

Sunan Abu Dawud Book 32 #4090. Narrated Umm Salama, Umm al-Mu'minin: When the verse, "That they should draw their jalabib close around them" was revealed, the women of Ansar came out as if they had crows over their heads by wearing jalabib.

In case there is any confusion about how a Muslim sister is supposed to go about obeying Surah al-Ahzab ayah 59, this hadith shows that the correct way to obey it is to wear the garment called "jilbab", since that is what the sahabiyat (rAa) did. Note that they did not hesitate or delay or make excuses: when they were told by Allah SWT to wear the garment called "jilbab", they did, right away.

And there is more even than this. Some of the women remained in seclusion and never went out so that they did not own the garment called "jilbab". The hadiths record that the Prophet (sAas) commanded the women to come out for the Eid gathering, and what he said about the issue of the garment called "jilbab":

Sahih Bukhari Book 8 #347. Narrated Umm Atiyya: We were ordered to bring out our menstruating women and screened women to the religious gatherings and invocation of the Muslims on the two Eid festivals. These menstruating women were to keep away from the musalla. A woman asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What about one who does not have a jilbab?". He said, "Let her borrow the jilbab of her companion".

As for your friends..well if they can't accept you for what you are then what kind of friends are they? Allah SWT is sufficent for you.

May Allah SWT make it easy for you.
Do not delay...you don't know how long your life is. You should think about the hereafter.

Allah SWT bless... [wlm] :-)

peace be upon you respected sisters, brothers, and elders, especially those that replied. [slm]
i have just recently checked your replies and must admit that they are very useful. i will definitely wear a jilbab.  :P
i wear a jilbab at home but starting to wear it at school and outside was a big step for me. :(
right now it only seems a little step, thankyou for your moral support may allah the great bless you all and guide you, until the day of akhira.  :D
i will like to ask one other question.  ;)
i want to go to an islamic school. my family are trying to find an islamic school for me. i think that the basic knowledge of islam and the in depth knowledge of islam i can not achieve at home. i really want to know more about islam. i want to be able to read my namaz and understand what i am saying, i want to remember allah with every heartbeat, i want to say i am proud to be a muslim with great sincerity. i think that the only way to do this is to go to an islamic school. 8)
the atmosphere in mixed schools is very different. the school that i am currently attending is not very encouraging in building my eductaion let alone islam.
i am a very sensitive peron and always think what people think of me. you all mentioned to me if my friends can't accept me wearing a jilbab then they aren't really my friends. that is true. they are only friends of this world. friendships that i have with them can be broke very easily. i have begun to understand this as i have started to see them in a different perspective.
thankyou all for letting me seem them as they really are.  :-/
going to an islamic school will also be easy. but i don't know which one. i have no proper knowledge of the quran. i am 15, and will the school board teach me, even though i have less islamic knowledge then my age? (i hope you all understand the question inshallah) :-[
i want to go to an islamic boarding school. so they can also encourage me to read my five times daily salah regularly. this my present school does not. in a way it discourages me, the atmosphere is very very discouraging. :o
please reply. my apoligies for asking another question. but inshallah you will reply.
may allah bless you all and guide you to the right path leading to jannah. inshallah.

[slm] Sister Ambre,

Masha'Allah, that you have made such a decision.  I think that it is so beautiful when I see young people really trying to follow islam.   :-*

I work at an Islam school and it does not matter what level you are at, they are just happy to have you.  As for Islamic studies and Arabic you will be put in a class that best suits you.  When you make duas and work hard you will come a long way in learning about islam.  Insha'Allah everything will work out for you!   :)

Salam

I found the jilbab very liberating. For years I had worn the hijab and wore long skirts and such. But it is really hard finding modest clothing. The skirts have slits etc.

You put on your jilbab and keep the wardrobe you like!

Perfect.

Wallah i love wearing jilbaab but the problem in my country(South Africa) is that they're so expensive( the nice ones). It would be really nice if shops here could realise the demand for them..make them and sell them inshallah! [wlm] [wlm

Alhamdullilah , I just starting wearing jilbab/abayas everywhere I go. It wasn't as big a step for me as hijab was though.

Now if this is something you really want to do, then I say just do it. If your schoool restricts it then maybe you can talk to  acounseler or advisor? My school has no dress code alhamdullilah so it isn't a problem.

About your friends, I'm assuming they're non muslim friends, if they don't want to accept you trying to be more modest, and wear full hijab then I don't see any friends. You never really know a person utnil they're put into a situation where they have to act like their true selves.

But inshAllah everything will be ok.if you want to ask me anything else feel free to PM me  :)

Wassalam

[slm]again i write to give my salam to all the brothers, sisters, older and younger ones who are reading this.
its my summer holidays and i am really depressed, because of the situation i am facing. i remember writing to you that i am going to wear a jilbab after your confidence, but a problem has been raised. i wore the jilbab for a day at school, i was told to come to school the next day with the jilbab removed and the correct uniform.
i'll admit now it struck hard, i really didn't think the school would disapprove of me wearing a jilbab, but inshallah i will continue to wear at home.
But the real need is to wear it at school that is where there are loads of people of other gender that are not related.
i went to the headteacher and told her that i would like to wear the jilbab and why cannot it be accepted as the school uniform? she replied 'that the governing body make the decisions, write to me a letter that says the pros and cons of the jilbab and why you think it is useful etc and i will forward it on.'
this is my first problem because i cannot compose the letter.
second problem
i sent a second message to you all saying that i would like to go to an islamic school and my parents are considering.
the thing is my parents aren't even trying, its like they don't want me to learn about my religion, i am sorry to say they have not given me the decent education about my religion they should have done. and they are not aiding me of getting some.
they said next year is an important year and that i may be able to go after that. but i will be in sixth form, i feel that every year that i wait, there is more loss to me.
like most parents in the present day they are placing more value on the education, then on islam. its like they only want to practice when they are in need. even then they do not do it properly. i know i am not supposed to say this, they are my parents, but i really want to know about my religion, not through books but through people, but i can't do that, what has the world come to?
firstly, it was a jilbab they did not get me one, i had to literally beg
it was expensive they gave over in the end
but still they do not like me walking around with it on. they say stuff that isn't really encourageing, if my own parents are like this what shall i expect of other people??
so right now, no islamic school, no jilbab at school and my g.c.s.e.s what can get worse?
thankyou for reading this and i hope you can offer me help by the will of allah

[slm] Sister Ambre,

Hang in there and keep praying!  You never know what is going to happen.  Have you tried looking for an Islamic school in your area?  Find one and go and talk with them.  Also, find out their academic statistics.  I work at an Islamic school and we really stress academics!  You need to prove to your parents that you are really serious and that Islamic schools are competitive.  Insha'Allah, if you do all of the leg work your parents will realize how important this is to you and they will support you in your efforts.

Do you have friends, who are Islamic and are supporting you?  Bring them around the house as much as possible so that your parents start to open up to them.  You never know what will help to change your parents minds, insha'Allah.   ;)
