mY cousin just had a baby boy, and they have chosen the name 'aakhil', but htye want to choose another spelling, because aakhil is a hindu spelling, they cant think of anthing else besides aaquil, aakil. hey're also talking about choosing  a name by numerology- certain numbers meaning certain things. like 1 would define a leaderlike ach alphabetical letter corresponds to a certain number. I'm fine with the name aakhil or aaquil or whatvere, but I don't know if this numerology business is islamic, and i was wondering if anyone else knows about it.
And by the way, which IS better? aaquil or aakhil?

well..if the name is derived from the word "aqal" (sensibility?) then it should be spelled aaqil  ???, they would only write aaqil  as aakhil if they are hydro  :P..no offense...trust me i know how hydros butcher the Qaaf and Khaa , I am one  ::).

that numerology sounds soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much like bidaa  :P ahem..but i didnt say that  :P, let someone else explain.

Mashallah, the baby is very cute.  Mabrook to you and your family.  :)

Sister, as for your question about using numerology to choose the name... well, in what way exactly is this being used?

I'm not a scholar, but I think I share your sentiment.  This doesn't sound very advisable.

If its based on picking a name based on the number hoping for good fortune, then this is an unIslamic innovation.  The Prophet(SAW) explicitly forbade any kind of fortune telling.

We must be very careful, that in our efforts to please Allah, that we dont inadvertently commit acts which may, or may not, border on shirk.

I think it may be an idea, to ask them if they're aware that relying on numerology for names, or marriage dates, or good fortune, is based on old customs originating from Eastern religions such as Hinduism, etc.

Fe aman Allah  ;-)

Mabrook sister...baby is beautiful and has lovely chubby cheeks (aaahhh)!! Masha Allah. :-*

What does the names Akhil mean? ???

I suggest you get the parents a good muslim names book and advise them to choose a name that is pleasing to Allah SWT - I like the name Abdullah. That numerology stuff - certainly sounds like bidaah...Islam came to eradicate such beliefs and superstitions. Where did they get this idea from anyway? Is it from culture?

Aaqil is definitely better, as I do not know what aakhil means.

I can't give references but from what I have read, numerology was practiced in Babylon. It was picked up by the Jews, and it was used to predict the future, as well as characteristics of individuals from their names. It was also used for performing magic, as numbers were held to have magical properties.

Again from what I have read, it is to be avoided. It could very well fall in the category of "shirk".

Not only is numerology bidah.....but it's SHIRk.
Shirk is the only sin that Allah does not forgive. Please let your family know that this is not an Islamically acceptable way of deciding the name.....

Salam alaikum

I've also seen the spelling:  Aqeel, for the name that's been chosen.

Mubrook - may he be the coolness of his parents' eyes, Ameen.

From a Muslim names site:

Aaqil - Intelligent.

and

Aqeel - Wise, Intelligent There have been several prominent men with this name; Abu Aqeel was a transcriber of the Quran; ibn abu Talib was one of Abu Talibs Family; Ibn Bilal was a grandson of the poet Jarir.
