for the past few days someone (whose IP address I happen to know) has been posting *vile* messages on the guestbook in our blog. I tried getting in touch with the website that supplies the guestbook, but they say they can't block out anyone.
does anyone know how to deal with this ...is there any way I can stop this person from posting..is there any way I can remove the guestbook from the blog's template ?

I'd be very grateful for any help inthis matter..jazaakumullaah

wlm,

are you going to the rihla!!? i wish i had applied...:( i know Allah would have worked it out for me.. i am so dumb!!! anyways may Allah bless all of the ppl that are going inshaAllah

as for website spam

you need to have tight control over any comment area... most blogs/guestbooks will have a feature for moderation... only entries that are approved by you appear.. if they don't have that.. get a guestbook that does

if you own a webserver you can ban the entire domain or ip it's coming from, but nowadays everyone changes their ip every time they login.. so moderation is the way to go

hope that helps

There is a simple way to remove the guestbook, but my post contained some errors, so I will modify my post and repost it here.

You can remove the ultraguest.com guestbook that you have installed in your template, although that is a drastic measure. I am sure your ISP can block that offending IP address.

When you have logged on to your blog for editing a post or posting a new post, what you see is pages with tags like this:

Posting    Settings    Template    View Blog

you click on the Template tag, and you are now in a position to edit your template. I thought I had looked at the code of your template but it was actually the code for your webpage.

it includes whatever defines and is in your blog.

Now this is important. I am sure you know how to copy and save the template, but I will write down the steps, just the same.

Open a text file in notepad, save it as Template-1.txt, but keep the file open.

Right click on the text in your blog template window, move the pointer to "Select All", press the left mouse button

The entire template text will be selected.

right click on this selected text, go to the Copy command in the menu that is displayed, and then again press the left mouse button. This copies the highlighted text to your computer's memory.

Go to the text file (containing nothijg) you have saved as "template-1.txt", right click and use the paste command to paste the content of your template in that file, and save it again.

This gives you a backup copy of the template if anything goes wrong.

Save it again as "template-2.txt".

In this template-2.txt file, scroll down until you see the following text. You can also use the "Find" or "Search" feature in Notepad or any text editor you are using. Search for the word UltraGuest, and locate this code:

<!-- UltraGuest HTML Code Start -->
<center>[ <a href="http://www.ultraguest.com/?id=1088405693">View Guestbook</a> ] [ <a href="http://www.ultraguest.com/?id=1088405693&sign=1">Sign Guestbook</a> ]<br><a href="http://www.ultraguest.com">Get a FREE guestbook here!</a></center>
<!-- UltraGuest HTML Code End -->

The above code is contained within your profile, so the Guestbook is attached to this profile. You need to delete the guestbook code, but not the profile. So, go to where the UltraGuest Code starts, which is:

<!-- UltraGuest HTML Code Start -->

Select this code between the start and end lines, which is:

<center>[ <a href="http://www.ultraguest.com/?id=1088405693">View Guestbook</a> ] [ <a href="http://www.ultraguest.com/?id=1088405693&sign=1">Sign Guestbook</a> ]<br><a href="http://www.ultraguest.com">Get a FREE guestbook here!</a></center>

Delete this portion from the [start to end of the ultraguest.com Guestbook from your template. i.e: the code between these two lines:

<!-- UltraGuest HTML Code Start -->

<!-- UltraGuest HTML Code End -->

sometimes there is more code on the same line where the end of UltraGuest HTML Code is indicated.

<!-- UltraGuest HTML Code End -->

For this reason I have asked you to remove the portion between the start and end lines. Use the preview button on the Edit Template page to see the changes. Then if you are satisfied, save the changes, and republish your blog. The guestbook will have been removed from your blog.

If the preview does not show the required changes, or something in amiss, do not save the changes, but press Backspace key to move away from the edit Template mode.

I hope this is clear. Someone had a problem similar to yours, and was almost as clueless about the jargon employed by computer geeks :)

But I think my post is clearer. Here is a link to that person's Q and A on the ultraguest.com forum
