Advice for UKers

slm,

Unfortunately watched some atrocious news today coming out of the UK... like an interview with the head imam of London's "main mosque" and some racist guy and other stuff... I thought I'd give some tips.... not sure who reads this but honestly each one of us can make a difference.. I think Muslims in the US have learned alot from 9/11 and its aftermath... so some advice for y'all....

1. After something happens you have a very short window of time to counter it, which you must. After this 'window of open-mindedness' closes, the backlash will begin so brace yourselves for it.

2. It's important for every organization to write a detailed statement condemning the blasts and what the mosque's position is. Every mosque, organization, even university islamic societies... A very simple "We condemn the perpetrators of this heinous destruction of innocent life..." etc.. and some verses and hadiths about the importance of life in islam. This can be placed on their websites, faxed to the media or just left around the mosque or pasted on the door for anyone who passes by the mosque.

3. Spokespeople from every mosque and community should make themselves available to speak to the media...they should be well-versed in soundbytes and responses to the most usual questions. They should be vocal about their position. When media comes they should be directed to only these people. Muslims should be asked not to speak to the media and to ask the media to talk to the official spokespeople.

4. Ordinary mosque-goers should be encouraged to write to the newspapers and call media.. they should be extremely vigilant about the use of terms like "islamic terrorism" or "muslim extremists". An effort should be made to push people to acknowledge the difference between islam and terrorism. Anti-islamism in the media should not be tolerated. Each community must utilize all members to counter anything that is shown in their local media that is anti-islamic.

5. Ordinary Muslims should bring up the subject with their friends and co-workers and mention that they think it's horrible and explain how upset they are that people are blaming muslims and how this has nothing to do with islam. This is extremely important because sometimes they don't relate what is happenning to you or they think you somehow condone the acts because you are not saying anything.

6. Precautions should be taken to protect the mosques and schools, etc. Immediately after 9/11 there were a number of rash incidents and over time you all know all the hate crimes and arson and vandalism of mosques.

If i think of more I'll add em inshaallah...

Jazakallah for the advice.

After sept 11 I discussed in detail with Americans Islam's position on events happening in the world. People were looking for reassurance, information and hope.

It is important that we engage in dialogue with the Brits now too.

I heard some awful stuff on the radio last night about how our leaders were not condeming the attacks. That is not true as they are. But we need to keep speaking up.

Dude, that's what I was trying to do, put up all these things that all the different groups and organizations in the UK said.  I think I put up like 60 posts, and it took me a looooooooooong time to do, because the board is so slow and slow and even slower!!!  Anyways, it like crashed and now no one can add any more, I have about 50 more posts to add there from more organizations.

I pray for everyone's saftey.

Although the attack was very hostile and has the potential of flaming some racist reactions, the brittons in general are more aware of islam and muslims than the americans.  I'd like to think that the reaction post the recent attack would be much more restrained than that of the ready to avenge american red necks.

What is really needed, i think, is NOT to bend over backward and say that that we as muslims denounce this, but to spread more awareness on islam and the current suffering in muslim countries.  Let's try not to alienate muslims who experience the same if not worse blood shed every so often, and bring some light to their issue/cause.  The concern need not to be limieted to the immediate safety of the muslims living in the UK.  It is certainly possible to be brave and say look, we need to work together to end such hostilities and aggressions from recurring everywhere.  Let's start with a fair foreign policy in Iraq/Palestine/Afganestan. I mean, really, look at how the pro-israeli wing's reaction; they came on TV saying that this is what israelis have to deal with on a daily basis!! Wow!!

wassalam

[slm] All,

First I heard of the London bombings was through an e-mail from our external relations unit in the office.  Hence surfed the net to see the magnitude and extent of it.

Glad that our board members in London are okay and sad that many innocent lives were lost. I have travelled in those London tubes in two occassions that I have been there.  Imagining the horror of both those who died and those who survived makes my blood run cold.

Thanks Bro. bhaloo for posting all that you have.  Reading through them gave some insights that are valuable.
