Muslim family bury daughter

Shahera Akther Islam, 20, a bank clerk from Plaistow

The funeral took place yesterday of Shahara Islam, the 20-year-old Eastender whose modern Islamic lifestyle has emerged as a stark contrast to the fanaticism of her killers.

At the private service, the first for the victims of the London bombings, she was buried in accordance with the traditions of her religion with the prayer: “From it [the earth] did We create you, and to it you shall be returned. And from it you will be raised once again.”

In a moving tribute to their daughter, one of 13 to die on the No 30 bus, her family described her as “a Londoner, British, but above all a true Muslim and proud to be so”.

“Today our dear daughter, cause of our joy and light in our eyes - our Shahara is returning to her Lord - an innocent and blood-stained martyr.”

Shahara Islam, a 20-year-old bank clerk from Plaistow, East London, was buried at a private service today after a funeral at the East London Mosque.

A statement released by her family described "a simple girl from a simple family" who had been in the wrong place last Thursday morning. Ms Islam was killed on the number 30 bus that exploded in Tavistock Square.

"‘We are all from God and to Him we must all return’," said her family's statement today, quoting the Koran.

"Today our dear daughter, cause of our joy and light of our eyes - our Shahara is returning to her Lord - an innocent and blood-stained martyr. She was an Eastender, a Londoner and British, but above all - a true Muslim and proud to be so.

"She was a simple girl, from a simple family who led a simple life. Unfortunately she was at the wrong place at the wrong time on that unfortunate day. The flame of her life has been cruelly extinguished from this beautiful young woman in her prime, who had the whole world ahead of her."

Islam's family thanked the police and their mosque for their support and asked for privacy to grieve. The police and coroners have now identified 38 of the 54 people known to have died as a result of the attacks last Thursday morning.
