have been out of touch, sort of. Reason: painters and workmen have taken over the house.

Son's nikah is on the 9th of September, the daughter-in-law comes to our home on the 10th, and the walima on the 11th. Anyone in town and willing to attend, please let me know. I will send the card when these are printed. :)

The house is still with the workmen, and the painters have moved in as well, although a lot needs to be done. Wonder if it will be completed in time for the marriage.

Is this your first wedding of one of your children?

What words of widom have you given him?

May Allah bless them and your future grandchildren!
Assalaamu Alaikum...

MashaAllah that's awesome.  Congratulations to you and your family.

I am in town (I think we live in the same sector)...but I'm not sure how awkward it would be to show up at your son's wedding, heh.

Good luck with everything...I hope the weather is favorable, inshaAllah.

Wasalaam.

Salem, surely I will send you one, but you have to provide your address and phone number again. I lost it when my record on the computer got deleted.

Kathy, yep! this is the first one of my begotten :). I only have one son, and one daughter. Now I am beginning to see the wisdom in having many offspring. I told my son:

"gurba kushtan roze awwal"

kill the cat on the first day.

There is story associated with it. Let us see if the others on this board know that story.

Not that my son listened. he has been a very determined child, always getting his own way. I blame that on Dr Spock book number one.

JO, you should come, with your family. Wouldn't be awkward, at least on the walima.

I have told the samdhis we want to keep it simple, and within the shariah, but I expect some minor violations.

Congratulations brother, may Allah {swt} Bless your son and your new daughter and make their marriage fruitful and eternal  :)

I hope you explained what your idea of minor violatons is. You'd be surprised at the different interpretations of what minor is  ;)
kill the cat on the first day.
The way I have heared the story is
when the boy tried to kill the cat she said to him  "I  am  also told to make you a ring in my finger "

So timbutktu  make sure she is not told about the ring or you will have to change that advice

:)

thezman, shukran, I will let you know what the violations were, or how the ceremony proceeded for you to decipher the violations.

For a start, in the interest of simplicity and to curb indulgence, the government in its wisdom has decreed that lesser mortals like us cannot be allowed to have feasts on the occassion of marriage, wedding, rukhsati or walima, so the card will not contain any of these words.

Can anyone suggest how to word the invitation so as not to incur the wrath of the government? Maybe we can even have a competition for that :)

The punishment for this "crime" of inviting or arranging such a feast is an involuntary contribution to the government's exchequer, plus becoming the government's guest at one of its "facilities". Somehow people do not seem to relish the prospect.

Salem, about your story, well it is passable, but the real story is worth hearing. Anyone else wants to have a go at telling the story? Come on you guys from the good old sub-continent, surely you know the story.

OK, here is the story on the cat. Sisters, please forgive me. This is just for fun.

There were these two friends, male. They were inseparable, going everywhere together, enjoying each other's company. Then they grew older, and married.

As any married man will testify, the first casualty of marriage is bachelorhood friends (for males). :)

Then they found their work took them even further away, so far that they lost all contact. After a very, very, long time, one of them came to the other's house to meet him. He found that his friend's wife was an exemplary one, treating her husband as a real "sar ka taaj", Sartaj, (literally, the crown on the head). She made sure her husband was comfortable in every way, obeying him, never disagreeing with him, and talking to him in a low voice.

The friend was impressed. When the two friends were alone, he asked what the secret was. And then he confided about his own wife who had made his life hell, shouting at him, not letting him have a say in anything, ridiculing him in front of others.

The lucky one thought for a while, trying to reconstruct the years after marriage in his mmind. Then he replied that he could only remember one incident that could have some bearing on this behaviour, and that was on the first night together with his wife. The wife was naturally shy and blushing, and he was enjoying looking at his wife when suddenly he heard a cat's meow coming from within the room. Now how had that cat come into his room, and how dare it disturb this enjoyable moment? So he picked up a stick to get the cat out of the room, and threw it at the cat. The cat's reflexes were perhaps not in shape, for the stick hit him so hard that the cat just collapsed on the floor and died.

The wife was so frightened at this show of anger that she became the most obediently quiet and loving wife ever, although she was known to be a very sharp-tongued, caustic and volatile girl before marriage.

The visiting friend thought about this prescription, and concluded that he must follow it to bring his own wife to heel. When he returned to his home, he caught a cat, and put the cat in a room with a stick, and closed the door. Then summoning all the courage and energy he could muster, he shouted: "Begum, come here!"

His wife was surprised to hear that shout from her husband, who had so far been a very quiet, obedient sort of husband. She marched towards the room like a tsunami. When she entered the room, her husband picked up the stick, and threw it with full force at the cat.

The cat had been alert at all the commotion. It understood that the stick was meant for him. Before the stick could reach him, the cat jumped, and was on the window sill, thus nullifying the aim.

The wife was now real angry. She picked up the stick, and gave two or three of her best on her husband's back, saying: "You useless excuse of a man, instead of doing anything worthwhile, now you have started hitting poor, voiceless cats!"

So, kill the cat on the first day. :)

I'll make sure to be the one who does that.  :-)

By the way, Mabrook on your son's wedding and may Allah bless this union.
