OMG Road Rage :O

How is everyone?  I hope things are going well with everybody, inshaAllah.

Okay, so recently, I have had to drive around town quite a bit...and I've realized that I'm not as patient, calm, or even law-abiding as I once used to be.  Quite the opposite -- I've become a MONSTER on the road.  The other day, some guy on a motorcycle was smiling disgustingly, and he followed me for three blocks, then happened to touch my car..which is a serious no-no.  So I ended up tailgating him for about ten minutes until he pulled up on the side of the road, and then I honked at him, rolled down the window and said "YOU'RE SO STUPID .. I HATE YOU"  (It was the only thing I could think of at the time)...

Anyway, driving in Pakistan is an absolute outrage...even though this is Islamabad...the easiest city to drive in.  But it's driving me CRAZY...and every time I get into the car, I pray that I don't get angry...but it isn't working.

How do you guys deal with road rage?  I don't want to roll down my window and yell out anything again...because that's dangerous.

Wasalaam.

you're so funny justone... i didn't think you'd be the one with road rage!!!

maybe try playing some soothing music or lecture while in the car and leave for stuff ahead of time so ur not in a rush and getting angry at ppl in the road for driving slow or whatever

or yeah how bout those little sound thingies they used to sell awhile ago for stress in the car that makes sounds like a machine gun :P

How did you say that in Urdu?  "BATAMEEZ!  Mujse tum say naraaz hoon: ???

How bad can Islamabad driving be?  Now Karachi driving is seriously bad.  Here in Cali I try to avoid rush hour and traffic.  Just remain calm and have sabr.  :)  Lately while I've been driving I've been listening to a tafsir of the Quran put out by Farhat Hashmi's student, its up in mp3 format on their website.

I was trying to work that out and this is what I have come up with

Tum sab sey barey Ghade ho May tum sey nafrat karte ho

Do tell us what you said Sr. Jo, I may not be able to sleep otherwise......

Haha...that was SO funny, Fozia.

Unfotunately, I haven't mastered the language to the degree where I can have an outburst in Urdu.  It was in English...

Next time, though....I'm going to use the "ghada" line.

And yeah, I agree...driving in Islamabad is a walk in the park when you compare it to Karachi.  But at least people in Karachi DON'T STARE.  And if they are staring at you, you know it's time to run, because you're prolly going to get mugged.

In Islamabad everyone stares.  From the guy who collects our garbage, to the Senior Vice President at my ex-job.  (lol...ex-job).

bhaloo, how long have you been away from Pakistan?

"BATAMEEZ!  Mujse tum say naraaz hoon"

wrong :)

The correct Urdu is:

"BUD-TAMEEZ! Mein tum sey nafrat karti hoon" (for a girl saying this, of course.

Looks like I have to start giving lessons in Urdu even to ex-pat Urdu walas. :)

We should form a "Bad Urdu" club.

Actually let me share a story:

Back when I was 15 or so, I went to Karachi for the summer...and everyone was around at the time....like all of my cousins and aunts and uncles under one roof.  So some little child found it amusing to crush up a bag of chips and scatter it like confetti in my grandmother's room.  When she walked in, she looked like she was going to be really sick (she reeeeeally likes everything clean).  SO I made her sit down, while I went in search of a broom.

A BROOM -- IN KARACHI ... that's like hard to find, because no one does their own brooming in Karachi.  So I went looking for the "maasi" (housecleaner)....and when I found her, I put on my best urdu, "Batool, aap like please like woh jhuraa bata dain kidhar hai?"  And she's like "say wha?" And I'm like "you know...a jhuraa!!!"  And she's like "ummm...no?"

It went on for like five minutes, until my cousin walked up the stairs, put her arm around me and said "uhuh...righttttt....sarah I think you're looking for a JHAAROOOO"     Then she proceeded to laugh and inform EVERYONE in the house of what happened.

I have never been able to live it down.

And in case anyone is wondering...my nani had already cleaned it up by the time I got back with the jhuraa.

Oh I have another one.  My sister goes, "Meri zindagee mein in sab cheezon kay liye kamra nahi hai" ...

HAHAHAHAHA.  (She translated from "I don't have room (as in a bedroom) for these things in my life")

While I'm making fun of my family...

My brother sat me down two years ago and asked me to say the word "finger" in urdu.  So I go "oh you know...UNGLI."  And he's like "no way!!!  I've been saying UMLI my whole life."

LOL.

Sr. JO were you born in the States???

We had a really strict policy in our house where all of us have to speak Urdu in the house. So our urdu or rather Hinglish (Hindi/Urdu/english) is passable.....just!!!

Your Urdu is bad, and Timbuktu's might not be much better.  :D   If you google the word "Batameez" you will find over 1,000 occurences of it.  Guys, your talking to the official jannah.org 2003 Urdu contest champion.  That would be a good thread to visit.

It's not the Batameez that's wrong.
Must say that if you'rs was the championship winning entry the Madina contest must have had very thin pickings..... :P

but here are a couple of words. Can you tell the difference, and how would you write them in Roman Urdu (the sort that is popular here at jannah.org) :)

OK first one reads Ba-tameez, second reads Bad-tameez. At last those hours spent learning Urdu come to the fore......(unless I'm wrong obviously, in which case I think my parents ought to ask for a refund).

[slm] OK JO, here is a lesson: Internet Explorer 101

If you have foreign looking characters that ought to read Arabic, or Urdu, look for the menu at the top. SOmewhere it says, "View"; click there. Then in the drop down menu you will see spmething called "Encoding". Go there. Another drop-down menu appears. Select the one language you suspect it is in. If not available, there will be an option called "more". Go there. Yet another drop-down. Select again the one nearest to the language. In this case it will be "Arabic Windows". Click there.

Let us know the results :)

Fozia, right on. and the meanings are:

ÈÇ ÊãíÒ = with (good) manners
and
ÈÏ ÊãíÒ = with bad manners
Kewl!

Now that was an exercise worth doing. The Arabic encoding stuff was too cool..
