Two questions that I am faced with...

Q1. Are we not allowed to pray for non-muslims, except when asking for them to be directed to Islam? What should we do when non-muslims we know are sick? Can we not pray for their recovery, then?

Q2. When praying the salaat, what should one do when one yawn or sneezes? Should one say "alhamdu lillah" or "asthaghfirullah" immediately or wait for the end of the prayer? Plus, I heard some people say that, yawning invalidates the prayer. What school of thought is this?

A1. Yes, we are allowed, even encouraged to pray. This should include a prayer to bring them to Islam, except when they are dead.

Q2. When praying the salaat, what should one do when one yawn or sneezes? Should one say "alhamdu lillah" or "asthaghfirullah" immediately or wait for the end of the prayer? Plus, I heard some people say that, yawning invalidates the prayer. What school of thought is this?

A2. One doesn't say "alhamdu lillah" or "asthaghfirullah" immediately. One should wait for the end of the prayer.

Yawning invalidating salaah? Don't think so, so I don't know the school of thought.

So are you saying that we can only pray for them to come to Islam???? How about other day to day stuff that we ask from Allah. For example, if my non-muslim neighbor is going to have surgery done, I would like to pray to Allah to help him/her. There is nothing that I don't ask from Allah, so when my heart feels worried for someone, I would like to ask him

I think he is saying that you can pray for them to get better, do Ruqya etc....But you should also pray for them to embrace Islam.

There is a hadith for praying for non-muslims. Look in the book of medicine in Bukhari for the exact hadith, but I will summarize here:

A group of the sahaba were travelling. They came to a village and asked the chief to host them. The chief turned them away. They decided to set up camp outside the village. During such time the chief was stung by a scorpion. The medicine men of the village couldn't cure him, so they sent a messenger to the sahaba to see if anyone could help them. One of the messenger's said " By Allah, I know how to perform Ruqya. But you sent us away and would not host us. The messenger appologized. The companion agreed to do Ruqya on the chief if he agreed that if it worked he would convert to Islam. The chief agreed and I beleive because it worked to village converted to Islam.

There is another hadith that says that we have the right to ask for a payment for performing ruqya on someone.

Incha allah this helps

look up tafsir at www.tafsir.com (I think). Inch Allah you will find what you are looking for.

My understanding of Q1, is that a Muslim is not allowed to pray for the forgiveness of one who has passed away without saying the shahadah. Otherwise you can make duaa for anyone for anything, but the best duaa is to ask Allah to show them the right path.

The Prophet [saw] was forbidden to pray for the mughfirah of his grandfather (I think it was his grandfather someone correct me if I am wrong please) who had loved him and helped him but refused to take the shahadah on his death bed due to the persuasion of Abu Lahab. When the Prophet [saw] persisted in praying for the forgiveness of his much loved relative, a verse was revealed to him which warned him not to.
Someone who knows more about this will come along and put this garbled account right I am sure inshallah.

It's best when making Du'aa to ask Allah to provide what is best for that person.
And Allah know's best.

That was very helpful.

Of course you can Allah (swt) to grant her that job. :)

In fact you can and should ask for halah (and jaez) things for people, Muslim or non-Muslim.
