Hello to everyone.  I am rather new here.  I have been a Muslim for many years now and live with my husband and our cat (Ziba) in Canada.  Our son is grown and married.  I love to cook and garden - especially flowers!  Our garden is only three years old and we have put much work into it (it started as a yard full of grass and weeds).

I have always felt so very near to Allah in my garden and find many of His Signs there.  It is always a joy to come across an ayah that tells about His Signs in the out of doors when reading Qur'an, they are some of my favorite passages.

We have mostly perennials (flowers that bloom again each year, for the non-gardeners!) and shrubs with a sprinkling of hanging pots and pots on the patio full of annuals (yes, that's right, you have to plant these each year).  We also have put in a winding path this year, it really brings the whole yard together.  We very much enjoy all the butterflies, birds, chipmunks and other various critters that frequent the garden.  There is a bird bath, a feeder full of seeds and a hummingbird feeder as well - all to draw those beautiful creatures near!  (Don't worry, the cat is an indoor cat, she cannot harm the birds!)

Insha'allah, I will be able to share and learn much from the members here.

Peace, ummziba.

Welcome to the board sister

Well Jannah mentioned herself and the other avid gardners but forgot to mention me ;)

The year started with tulips and they were a disaster

Alhamdullilah the Basil and Mint came out good ( Iam drying some for the winter)

Looking forward for some Arugula when things cool down a bit

Would love to have a few garden tips from you

btw I plant my stuff in flowerpots perched on the window-sill of my first floor apartment in Albany

Welcome once again

Mohammed

welcome fellow garden lover,

while my father plants the squash ( its out of hand - becomes all we eat now :)).. I tend to the flowers in the yard. this year was a rough one. WIth roses getting diseased and having to constantly spray them ...

And marigolds I've come to be bothered by. They are overtaking the begonias...they have become weed like. And dont mention the crab grass- I think we will have to re-seed next year or perhaps lay down sod:)

other than that. water water water. the sun has been exceptionally harsh these past few months.

welcome again dear!

salaam

Welcome to the board Sr.

Br. Siddiqui the day you kill the mint, is the day you know you ought to hang up your gardening gloves. Mint is the only plant I know that one can plant and subsequently forget about only to find it's taken over the entire garden......

Wassalaam
PS I am most definitely not a gardener,

[slm],

Thanks for the nice welcome Just One, jannah, siddiqui and lala marcy!  Glad to know there are many gardeners (or wish they could have time to be) here!

Brother Mohammed, I gardened in pots for many years before we bought a house.  There are many advandages (easier to control pests, watering, fertilizing etc.) and also some disadvantages (must water often, etc.).  From experience, I'd say that giving potted plants lots of fertilizer is the key to lots of blooms, along with diligent deadheading.  I also have grown mint this year (I love it in my chai [tea]), do you know how to keep it without having to dry it?  I do not like it dried in my chai.  Do you know if it could be frozen?

Sister lala marcy, my roses also suffered badly this year (too dry, too many bugs).  I do not like to use chemical sprays, so I did the "dishsoap in water" thing - ended up burning many of the leaves - oooops!  Anyway, they are nicely recovering now that the cooler nights of August are here, alhamdulillah!  My garden philosophy is rather laid back - if it grows, great!  If it dies, plant something else!  :D  I find this attitude helps me not stress over gardening, after all, it is supposed to be enjoyable!

I suppose I should start a gardening thread.  I will see if I can find one first, and if not, I'll start one, insha'allah.  That way we can all share gardening stories, tips and successes (as well as failures - which I seem to learn more from than anything!).

Peace, ummziba.

[slm],

I did find a gardening thread: "What is planting....?" started by Brother siddiqui, so I posted there.  That will bring it back up to the top, for now.  I do hope all the gardeners post there so we can share and learn from each other.  :-*

Peace, ummziba.

[slm] Umm Ziba,

Welcome to the board! :-*  I'm a not a gardener, although my husband did buy me nice gloves, that he then used to repot a cactus! ;)  I am actually in charge of watering everything.  Masha'Allah, the garden is gorgeous this year.  I ate my first tomato today! :-/  I find looking at the garden to be very peaceful!
