Dubai:
Banned from dancing in Mumbai, dance girls are looking overseas, including Dubai, for career prospects.

Travel agents from Mumbai told Gulf News that the girls have approached them to make enquiries about overseas career prospects.

Some had even applied for visas and passports anticipating the ban in Mumbai. Their preferred destinations are Dubai, Singapore and Malaysia, travel agents said.

The ban on dance girls came into effect at midnight on August 14 by the state government of Maharashtra.

A travel agent from Bandra, who did not want to be named, said some travel agents maintain contact with hotels overseas. Gulf News contacted some hotels in Dubai but hoteliers refused to comment.

Manjit Singh, President of the Dance Girls Association, told Gulf News from Mumbai that only a few dance girls would make it overseas.

"I know some Indian hotel owners in Dubai. I have been to Dubai a couple of times. I am myself looking for some opportunities over there.

In Dubai and other countries the dances that take place in hotels are well choreographed. The dance girls are required to dance as per the rules. A lot also depends on how good looking the girl is.

"I do not mind if these girls go to Dubai or any other country to work provided the employer is genuine and pays their wages on time," he said. In Mumbai these girls were free to dance the way they knew and wanted to. There was not much importance given to looks as well, Singh said.

Singh said the majority of dance girls would also find it difficult to get a passport as the agents quoted a lot of money.

"I personally have known so many cases where the girls are asked to pay Rs 10,000 to Rs20,000 [Dh1,685] by agents to get a passport made. Then there is a long waiting list. The girls go to Dubai on a three-month entertainment visa and earn about Dh1,500 to Dh2,500. Then they return."

A couple of dance girls who spoke to Gulf News from Mumbai said they had heard a lot about the manner in which dances were performed in some Indian hotels in Dubai.

One girl said: "I approached a travel agent and enquired how much he would charge me to get a visa to Dubai. I do not want to go to Singapore. Some of my friends have been to Dubai a couple of times. They were treated well and were paid on time. I might come to Dubai."

Another girl said: "We are fighting to get the ban lifted but until then we need to survive. I got my passport some three years ago."

wlm,

This is really sad..... what's the likelihood of these girls not being exploited and eventually ending up prostitutes in foreign ("musim"!) countries just trying to get by :( reminds me of indentured servitude.. which i suppose is what most ppl are doing in the middle east :(
