[slm] I have a question I was hoping y'all might be able to help me out with. One of my friends is interested in reading the Qur'an, not because she is considering Islam as a way of life, but instead because she is interested in God in general (she's a practicing Christian) and the ways by which different people get closer to God. We've embarked on essentially an interfaith reading of scriptures. I was talking to a few of my close friends, and they suggested that before she start reading the Qur'an, she read a book that introduces the Qur'an. She suggested this because the Qur'an, is not necessarily linear, and because it may be less easy for someone without as much background to understand Surah Baqarah, for example. I too think it might be a good idea to start with books about the Qur'an before she starts reading it, but I can't really find any books that are really geared to a non-Muslim audience. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd appreciate it. Jazakallah Khair, wassalam :-) |

[slm] There’s a actually good book that just came out, it’s called: Reflections on the Qur'an : Understanding Surahs al-Fatihah and al-Baqarah (Irfan Ahmad Khan) –- it looks quite interesting.... This book is an effort to understand the Qur'an with a modern mind. It provides an indepth and insightful study of Surahs al-Fatihah and al-Baqarah, with each surah being divided into several sections with study notes or reflections of different lengths. Readership: For all those interested in the study of the Qur'an, Islamic studies, Comparative Religion, World Faiths, Peace, Philosophy and Islamic Thought. Please let me know if you’re interested in sha Allah, and I will get you the link. wasalaams. |

[slm] I am not too fond of the Quran translations out there as they often leave the user confused and don't understand the proper context of the verses. That is why I recommend Ibn Kathir's Tafsir of the Quran (it is 10 volumes and nearly 6000 pages and is a good detailed explanation of the Quran). Now I know that sounds like a lot to read, so I'll provide an alternative: Fahm al Quran (english translation by Amina Elahi (student of Dr. Farhat Hashmi) http://www.alhudapk.com//audio-video/fahm-alquran-english/ This is phenomenal, it gives an excellent explanation of the whole Quran. Its about 60 hours in total and you can download and listen to it on your mp3 player. |
