| [slm] Wiretap Mosques, Romney Suggests--Pushes gathering of intelligence. the Boston Globe by: Scott Helman 9-15-05 Washington--Governor Mitt Romney raised the prospect of wiretapping mosques and conducting surveillance of foreign students in Massachusetts, as he issued a broad call yesterday for the federal government to devote far more money and attention to domestic intelligence gathering. Central to that is a facility opened last year at the state police headquarters in Farmingham designed to be the clearinghouse for a variety of intelligence gathered in the state. | wlm, ok anyone who thinks they aren't already wiretapping every mosque in this country, i have a bridge to sell ya ;) surveillance of foreign students openly is a little new though, reminds me of third world regimes... everyday i feel like we are living 1984 more and more |

| [slm] regarding students placed under surveillance, many years ago when I was in college I was told by fellow students (plus I read a few articles regarding this subject), that quite a few were screened before being allowed to take certain courses, and some were banned from taking them (nuclear Physics, satellite technology, etc). an article in one sunday new york times stated, that some universities had foreign students taking 'sensitive courses' under constant surveillance. |
