Female Students have been urged to take medical studies and specialize in gynaecology studies so as to alleviate the problem of female specialists in the field.

The call was made by Prof. Abdulaziz Shaukat, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Egerton University, Njoro, Kenya while addressing students recently at an educational exhibition.

He regretted that there was shortage of female gynaecologists in the country and cited Kisumu where he said they were only 2 such doctors in the whole district.

Shaukat stressed that going by Islamic ideals, it was of paramount importance to have more women Muslim specialists in the field.  "None of you would wish for your sister, or mother to be examined by a male doctor", he told the audience during the opening of an education exhibition in Mombasa recently.

Furthermore, he called for Muslim students to increase their efforts in all areas of education saying that there was a need for Muslims to be in all areas to foster development of the community.

"We need Muslims in all fields.  We need more Muslim lawyers, doctors, architects and other professionals", he said.

The Don however, lamented at the educational disparities among the Muslims and said there was a great need to rejuvenate the community to take a more profound view of education.  He said many people especially in the Coast Province had little regard for education and instead preferred to engage in redundant activities thereby contributing to the proliferation of drug abuse and other social evils.

He observed that as result of this disparity, the available employment opportunities were being taken by people from outside the regions while many local people continue to be redundant as they lack the desired qualifications.

The exhibition was held under auspices of the Nairobi Area Muslim Students Association (NAMSA) and the Mombasa based Muslim Mercy Youth.  It attracted hundreds of students from Mombasa and its environs who were guided on the academic courses available in higher institutions of learning.
