| Fury over Musharraf's 'cry rape, get rich' claim uploaded 17 Sep 2005 Fury over Musharraf's 'cry rape, get rich' claim Randeep Ramesh, south Asia correspondent The president of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, came under fire from human rights groups, international statesmen and media in his own country after suggesting that crying rape was an easy way to "be a millionaire" and get to Canada. Gen Musharraf, a key ally in the war on terror who promotes a liberal version of Islam, let slip his views during an interview with the Washington Post. He complained about Pakistan being singled out for abuses against women: "You must understand the environment in Pakistan ... this has become a money-making concern. A lot of people say if you want to go abroad and get a visa for Canada or citizenship and be a millionaire, get yourself raped." Article continues Paul Martin, Canada's prime minister, complained to Gen Musharraf at the sidelines of the United Nations general assembly, saying later that the comments were not acceptable and violence against women "is a blight that besmirches all humanity". International human rights groups released an angry response, in advance of Gen Musharraf's speech today to an audience of Pakistani-American women in New York. Amnesty International said he had been "callous and insulting". A public apology was needed "from President Musharraf to the women of Pakistan and especially to victims of rape, sexual assault and other forms of violence that are rampant with impunity in Pakistan". Hundreds of women are raped or killed every year in so-called "honour" attacks over behaviour deemed inappropriate. Mukhtaran Mai, who was gang-raped on the orders of a village council because her 12-year-old brother befriended a woman of a powerful clan, said: "A large number of women are molested and insulted in the country. How many of them have made money? Such thinking about women is not good." Source: The Guardian ___________________________________________ Musharraf is responsible for the rapes. in the mai case it was the rulers of the villiage who did it, in the Doctor case it was a high ranking officer. in both cases Musharraf did what he can to make sure the rapists go free. Iraq is occupied by the Cross worshipers, Jurusalam is occupied by the yahood, Kasmir is occupied by the Hindus and Pakistan is occupied by the Qadyanis. In all cases the Kaffir who rule our lands and their supporters amoungest the munafiq use rape to keep hold of power and deny that any rape has taken place, each and every time it is reported. |

| [slm] My god that's disgusting!! Not only does Musharraf sit on his butt and allow the law and order situation to be such that women can get raped as punishment for crimes they didnt even commit and allow the rapists to go free, but he comes up with an outrageous statement like that, which is an insult to all women. Like it wasnt enough for those women to go have to go through the mental and physical anguish of rape, that they now have to hear their President allege that they falsified their charges. |

NEW YORK: President Pervez Musharraf held unprecedented talks with American Jewish leaders, saying an anticipated resolution to the Palestinian question would revive the historical ties between Islam and Judaism. Musharraf, pressing his campaign for moderation in the Muslim world, became the first leader of a Muslim nation with no diplomatic relations with Israel to hold a public dialogue with Jewish leaders, officials of the Council for World Jewry said. The Pakistan military general was given a standing ovation and big round of applause as he arrived late on Saturday at the meeting of what is probably the most distinguished and influential community in the United States. “I cannot imagine that a Muslim and that too a Pakistani and more than that a man in uniform would ever get such a warm reception and such an applause from the Jewish community,” Musharraf said, as he gave a military salute to the audience, which included Pakistani Americans. Noting that the thorny Kashmir and Palestinian disputes are ripe for resolution, he said, “We ought to put our collective weight behind a push for their final solution. “I am convinced that peace in Palestine that does justice to both the Israelis and the Palestinians will bring to a close the sad chapter in the history of the Middle East (and) will revive the historical ties between Islam and Judaism,” he said. As the peace process progressed towards the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, Musharraf said, Pakistan “will take further steps towards normalization and cooperation, looking to full diplomatic relations” with Israel. Jack Rosen, the chairman of the American Jewish Congress, described the function as “an unprecedented evening.” It resulted from two years of secret talks, culminating with a meeting between congress leaders and Musharraf in Islamabad. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke before the congress in January last year but his nation already has diplomatic relations with Israel, congress officials said. “President Musharraf’s decision to be with us tonight is an act of individual courage, leadership and vision,” said Rohen, who is also chairman of the Council for World Jewry, which includes the American, French and Russian chapters of the Jewish community. Sharing the dais with Musharraf was senior US legislator Tom Lantos, a 77-year-old Hungarian Jew who, as a teenager, resisted the Nazis and then narrowly escaped the Holocaust for America. Lantos told Musharraf that at a time “when the civilized world is engaged in a global war against extremist Islamic terrorism, you have emerged as the quintessential Muslim leader of moderation, decency, reason, and acceptance of pluralism.” The Pakistani leader took “considerable political risk” by addressing a major Jewish organisation in New York, he said.
