Want to become Muslim after 20 years...

hi, any advice please?
i have been living as a muslim for about 16 years but have never said shahada in front of
imam and i only prayed in public for the first time last week! my husband is muslim, he
prays (behind closed doors), but has only sketchily shown me what to do. i long to be
knowledgeable but i am not sure if i am doing things right, and i am really anxious that i
make some sort of a declaration of my diin.
i am considering hijab at some point but my husband says diin is in my heart and i only
have to do that when i am ready, not to please others (his family).
i am very happily married il'hamdulilah, i just need guidance.
also we are an isolated muslim community here and the few muslims i do know out of the
family dont realise that i am in turmoil. i want to be taken seriously for my religion. i
have quite a lot of knowledge, but i am lacking the basics...i would greatly appreciate
any advice. i am trying to bring up our 6 children as good muslims, but i feel knowledge is
power and while i am unsure, then so are they.by the way, i am english, with tunisian
husband since i was 14...20 years now!!

Hello Anonymous,

It sounds like you are ready to accept Islam.  Sheikh Munajjid described how one can enter Islam:

Praise be to Allaah.

Any human being can embrace Islam. You do not need anyone’s permission. You simply say and believe that there is No God except Allah and that Mohammad is his Messenger. Once you say this sentence, you automatically become Muslim. From there, you start carrying on with the duties of Islam. You must do what Allah and His messenger tell you to, and stay away from what they tell you to. Islam does not tell you to do anything unless it is good for you. It also does not tell you to stay away from anything unless it is bad for you. You will notice the change in the way you look at things, the minute you become a Muslim. You will feel more relieved and secure only to think that you are fulfilling the orders of Allah. Doing this, you will clearly see the benefits of it for yourself and for mankind. You can embrace Islam in any Islamic center. This is only a formality. Once you say and believe in the Oneness of Allah and in the message of his Prophet Mohammad, then you are a Muslim.

To become a Muslim, simply say the following words:

Ash hadu alla ilaha illa Allah, wa ash hadu anna Mohammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu.

This means I testify and witness that there is no god worthy of being worshipped other than Allah and that Mohammad is his Messenger. You must say it and believe in it.

=============================

And then I highly recommend you buy a book like:
What Islam is All About by Yahiya Emerick
http://store.yahoo.com/islamicbookstore-com/b2828.html

It covers all the basic concepts about Islam very generally in about 400 pages, and from there you can go onto more advanced books.  Try listening to the Quran and reading it and reading the meaning, and I think that should get you started, insha'Allah (God willing).

assalaam alaikum sister,

i am so glad you posted here although i wish you would become a member instead of being anonymous! :)

anyhow i always encourage new muslims and people interested in islam to go seek out muslims in their area. this will help you know them, and them to know you. your friends there are probably used to how they thought of you, but if you broach the subject of islam with them i'm sure they'd be happy to share what they know and help you.

please do take the steps to "officially take shahadah". it is true that it isn't required and as long as you believe in your heart then you are "muslim", but i think it's always a good memory and turning point for people and can also help you renew your intentions and goals in life.

if the ppl in your hometown are not so forthcoming or friendly, please take the initiative on your own and order some books that look interesting that you can learn from. If you need some websites on how to pray you can check the mamalist: http://www.jannah.org/mamalist/Educational/Prayer/

take care inshaAllah and to be honest i admire anyone who can take the initiative to do something after 20 years. i hope i have the courage to change and improve myself as well 20 years from now.

AHLAN WA SAHLAN  :)

I think you are already muslem between yourself and Allah so it is that easy to become muslem as the door is open day and night

make sure when you become a muslem you are like any muslem  regardless of who is muslem born and who is reverted before who  such that the mistakes you might notice over some muslems  to not affect your faith and love to ISLAM

As human being we make mistakes so you should not  expect all muslems to be perfect other wise some thing is wrong with this religion

You also as a human being may commit some minor sins so this should not be a condition to wait till you find yourself 100%perfect to qualify you to become a muslem
for instance, you should not wait to make the shahada under the condition you are not ready to wear hijab etc.for any reason

Come to islam with any few knowledge you have and you will learn what you can gradually
or come with big knowledge so you can teach others ( you will be rewarded for either of these 2)

welcome  []

[slm]   Sis Emel,

May Allah (SWT) make it easy for you and open the gates of enlightenment upon you and your family - Ameen

It brings great joy to see someone who is so deeply concerned about her religious identity about islam. That is very very good Sis Emel, and I hope and pray that Allah (SWT) to give you all the guidance and knowledge that you seek about Islam
