[slm] Oh dear Sr. Jannah that is hilarious...sense, more money than... are words that come to mind. Did any one watch that film Lajja waaay back??? We had to have bouncers at the door when I married to keep uninvited 'guests' out, they turn up dressed like a guest and get to eat for free..... Paying for guests indeed how ridiculous. Wassalaam |

[slm] I honestly think that indians are about the least charitable people on earth. And the rich ones want to flash their wealth around for everyone to drool over. Its all about flashing your wealth and status. Abundant guests at your wedding is just another way of displaying it. It probably has its roots in casteism. The brahmins pretty much control the country... |

[slm] When i first read the two articles my initial reaction was incredulity and stupefication at what lengths people will go to please society and their ego! If that's how things are for rich people then how much more horrible must it be for the poor and those that cannot meet society's demands? Before i used to think that you had to do what made sense or felt right in life regardless of "conventions"...now i'm not so sure about it. I think we all succumb at one level or another to pressure otherwise it becomes very hard to be part of that society. Of course i'm not talking about clearly halal or haram stuff. But more mundane things such as social etiquette , fashion, who to marry\socialize with and how ,etc... The other day i was chilling with some sisters from another culture and they asked how old i was. When i told them they said i didn't act like my age. Was it because i tend to goof around a lot with sisters? Or because i never felt the inclination to follow so called social conventions about how girls my age should behave. Are there even such things? Who decides? It made me reflect, however, on how quickly we judge each other based on certain "cultural" standards, some of which make absolutely no sense. It's sad that sometimes people have to pretend to be someone else to be accepted. What do you guys think? |

[slm] Ya Allah: [quote]I honestly think that indians are about the least charitable people on earth[/quote] I have not found this true at all. In my neck of the woods I have found them to be generous, especially towords dawah efforts. |
