I don't know who sighted the moon, but the masjids here are doing the tarawih prayers.  First *DAY* of fasting is Tuesday, October 4th!!!    :o

Even though it was supposed to be impossible to sight.  :(

Ramadhan Mubarak

I fasted today and there were only a handful of ppl fasting at work today.  What makes it worse is that we're an Islamic school and yet we can't seem to all fast together  :(

We can only shrug and leave to the scholars to fight it out (not literally!).

i thought the solar eclipse meant that the sun gets blocked behind the moon not the other way around ???.  i think it is during a lunar eclipse that the moon cannot be seen (for few hours anyways).  it was not astronomically impossible to see it as far as I have read so far.  i

anyway,  I am fasting alhamdolellah.  some countries in the world have sighted it (and it was not saudi by the way this year).
take care

Ramadan mubarak!  I work at an Islamic school and we have the same issue,  but as long as we respect each other, then it is okay.  Life is just one big test anyway. ;)  We just waited to paint our moons until tomorrow.  :-*

I find that when I speak to family members in Pak they tell me Ramadan is always 2 days behind everyone else!

We fasted on Oct 4th too - following the central mosque in London even though there was a solar eclipse  ::) (didn't actually know about this until yesterday evening!).

Alf mabrook to you all - may Allah 'azza wa jall make this Ramadan beneficial for all the Muslims, and may He enable us to make full use of this precious month.

[slm] All,

Kenya, some fasted on the 4th and some, including me, on the 5th.

Those who fasted on the 4th said that the moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia.  Those of of us who fasted on the 5th went with our Chief Kadhi's go ahead.  We also had the ecplise on the 4th.

May Allah accept our Ramadan and Bless all Muslims, Ameen.

Remember: If some one claimed sighting at a location and people west of that location (within the visibility parabola) did not see the moon on the same date then that claim is invalid. This is the only criterion to screen out the wrong claims. If we accept any claims from anywhere when people see something and think that it was moon, then I must say that we will be disobaying Allah (SWT) against Surah 2, Ayah 189, "Yas-aloonaka 'anil-Ahillah, qul hiya mawaqeetu linnas-e wal-Hajj." Imam Abu-Hanifah had the wisdom to say that to establish authenticity of a sighting claim, one man's witness or small number of individuals' claim is not sufficient in clear skies. A large crowd is needed to have seen the moon.

South America! Prepare for Shawwal sighting on Nov 2:

North America! Beware of false sighting reports for Shawwal similar to Ramadan, on Nov 2, Wednesday, although it is possible to see it in South America and possibly South Africa on that day, because the moon is in Southern Hemisphere. Nowhere else in the world it can be seen on Nov 2.

There is more info on www.moonsighting.com
and more info on the false sighting reports on http://www.moonsighting.com/1426rmd.html

As far as I know, only 2 reliable witnesses are needed (perhaps this is a matter in which the scholars differ.

Anyways, the masjid that I go to, started on Tuesday (even though according to moonsighting.com it was not possible).  And another masjid nearby to it did the same.  A brother that goes to that masjid told me yesterday that they based it on the sighting by 2 imaams, one in phoenix and one in san antonio, but later it was learned that they fabricated this information and apologized, at least this is what the brother said.  And obviously this creates a lot of confusion.  I

Woah, this is their statement from the masjid, re-announcing the beginning of  Ramadan.  So I guess that means the fast will be 30 or 31 days here. :(

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious,, Most Merciful.

Assalamu’alykum wa rahmatullah
Due to the confusion often caused because of the indecision by religious organizations around Ramadaan and ‘Eid; both OCIF and ICOI agreed three years ago that provided no Islamic rules are violated, …

  1. We, as far as possible, bind ourselves to international decision on these matters
  2. If there is a split internationally, then we go with the national decision
  3. If there is a split nationally, then we will go with the practice of the majority of the mosques in our locality

By last night (Monday October 3rd), we were informed …

   * that most of the Muslim countries will commence Ramadaan fast on Tuesday October 4th, 2005. Many other countries did not follow suit.
   * by the time we prayed ‘Isha, that nationally, no decision was made by any ‘ulama body except مجمع فقهاء الشريعة بأمريكة Assembely of Muslim Jurists in America who announced the commencement of Ramadaan as Tuesday Oct 4th .We were also informed of confirmed sighting of the moon in Denver, Colarado by the Imam of the Colorado Muslim Society, Dr Ahmed Nabhani (accompanied by Mohammed Noorzai); as well as in Arizona by the Director of Tempe Islamic Cultural Center, Imam Ahmed Shuqayraat. We were informed at noon today that the National Shura Council in consultation with their astronomers found these testimonies to be scientifically inaccurate.
   * Locally, the majority of masajid in our locality (‘Umar al-Farooq, al-Ansar, Walnut, Masjd-un-Noor ….) decided to commence fasting on Tuesday Oct 4th. OCIF & ICOI decided to do likewise. We have subsequently been informed that many of the local masajid who intended to commence on Tuesday, then decided to go with the view of the national majority opinion and abide by the joint decision later made by ISNA, ICNA, the National Fiqh Council, National Islamic Shura Council and Muslim astronomical consultants, that Ramadaan fasting commences on Wednesday October 5th..

It is …

   * on the basis of these facts
   * in the interest of the unity of the Ummah
   * as well as the greater goodwill of our community
   * and the avoidance of another split at ‘Eid-ul-Fitr
that OCIF and ICOI hereby re-announce the official beginning of Ramadaan as Wednesday, October 5th, 2005.

May Allah accept our efforts, reward us for the good and overlook our shortcomings, Ameen!
