I just went out.

There is a gaping hole between the blocks of Margalla Towers. Two of the blocks (ten stories each) have collapsed totally. Extent of loss of life not yet certain, but there is widespread loss throughout Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Heavy removing machinery is being used at Margalla collapse to remove the debris.

Son has come back from work. The Blue Area (housing Islamabad's posh office blocks) have been totally evacuated.

Damage is far worse than it seemed at first.

People still trapped in the collapsed Towers.

We walked there to check it out, because our friends live in those buildings.  They made it out Alhamdulillah, but can't go back because that whole area has been sectioned off by the army, and all the towers are ready collapse any second.

My friend told me that her next door neighbor's apartment .. a young couple lives there.  Half of that apartment collapsed, the husband has survived, but the wife fell through.  I hope she's okay, inshaAllah.

SubhanAllah it was probably the scariest thing I have ever experienced.  My whole body aches from the crazy shaking.

We can still feel the aftershocks, and are on alert for 48 hours.

As I come out of the masjid after Maghrib, I don't see any lights in Margalla Towers. These are ghost Towers tonight.

Two blocks (75 apartments) in Margalla have collapsed totally. There is a gap in one surviving block where the lower flats have collapsed while the ones above are hanging in the air.

Little wonder the residents have gone or been evacuated. The adjacent AlMustafa and Park Towers are also deserted. Only three lights show through.

Many cars are damaged as well. Some, if not many, office buildings in the Blue Area have developed structural faults. Whole villages are said to have disappeared in the Northern areas in landslides triggered by the quake.

The night has fallen. I have been to taraweeh, and come out after eight rakaat of taraweeh, and already said the witr, but the crane and the debris trucks and the rescuers are still at work, in strong orangish yellow searchlights. People are still trapped under the concrete debris. Dust has again risen in the air.

Last night, before Iftaar, my friends said that hey were letting rsidents back into the other towers (1 by 1 with a police escort) to gather their belongings.  God knows how safe that is.

At around 10:30 pm, we had a huuuuuge storm in Islamabad.  It had started raining in Muzzafarabad earlier, and enitre hotels, cars, houses just slid into the river and were carried away.  The TVs have stopped working....so all we can do is hope and pray that the rescue was able to carry on, inshaAllah, and that the other buildings were not affected.

It's so sad to see this.

Earth quakes do not happen in a vacume.
What fitna happened before the quake?
What did the people do to cause it?
Allah knows, but it would be a good idea if we tried to find out what it was and make sure such behaviour ends.

Allah distroyed the city of Sodom and Gamora due to their Homosexuality.
What makes us think the cities of the 21st century are immune from such punishments for such crimes.

Read the thread about the "Gay" Marriage. The boys parents accepted dowry for their son.
when disgusting actions like this can happen in the open and go unpunished what do we expect?
When there is no out cry. when people aren't disgusted.
Some thing has to happen to remind us.

I know every one is going to hate this post. but think about it.

Abdullahcohn...it's not that I hate your post.  I completely see the logic behind 30,000 lower income people dying in Azad Kashmir...when there are tens of thousands of extremely corrupt people living in larger cities such as Karachi and Islamabad.

Yes, I see the light.

Further to that, I think it is not entirely moral to implicate a gay marriage as the culprit for the earthquake.  Allah swt has His reasons, and they are hidden to all of us.  Whether it was punishment, a test, a warning, or all of the above, the fact is that the death toll is rising by the minute.

It is highly impractical to sit down and point the finger at people or events at this point.  Whatever the earthquake was about, it shows that we and our small problems are extremely insignificant in the large scheme of things.

I live so close to the devastation, and so it may be easier for me to be of help to people who have lost homes, loved ones, entire livelihood, etc.  However, there are a number of things everyone can do regardless of how far away you might be:

1) www.muslimaid.org

May Allah ta'Ala forgive us all, and may He grant sabr to the people who have been directly affected by this tragedy.

I'm glad to know ppl on this board are ok. I'm ok too. I'm in shock though. Shocked that Pakistan can't even help itself. My God they dont have any equipments and are relying solely on the world outside for help.

I'm devastated at our poverty.

I'm sad that initial response from many of the muslim countries for fellow muslim brothers and sisters was far less from what was offered to America after hurricane Katrina. I'm not saying they shouldn't have offered reliefe and help to America, but i'm asking dont Muslims deserve the same?

Muslim countries offered US Aid in dollars, and for us it's in Riyals. For them it was millions, for us it was far less. They increased the offers yesterday and some even changed it to dollars, but they should have done that from the beginning.

I can't even make it to realtives funerals, as the roads are blocked and they are burying them so quickly.

People are without food in many of the remote areas. They haven't dropped supplies yet in most of the areas by helicopters or planes. People cant leave the devastated areas because of landsliding on the roads.

I feel so helpless. I keep wonder why did Allah test/punish us with this in Ramadan, the month of Mercy? I wonder if its a fair question to ask of Allah.

I personally wouldn't trust the government's relief efforts or donating to them. I trust the NGOs more, wether foreign or pakistani. Make sure you donate to some known or well heard of organizations.

People I know personally donated to to people they could trust. My uncle filled up a truck of supplies and and left with cash to NWFP from lahore yesterday. He will get realtives and friends there to help distribute aid. He will drive as far as he can and then unload the supplies with family and friends and start hicking. Some places we know of can be reaches by hiking, it will be difficult but it needs to be done inshallah.

Another uncle and aunt are leaving with supplies and cash tomorrow inshallah.

Keep the Ummah in prayers.

Sister Panjul...I understand that you may be upset but who are we to question Allah SWT's will? We have to repent and seek Allah SWT's forgiveness and pray for the families affected by the earthquake. Remember, 'with every difficulty there is relief'.

In times of hardship, we have to make sure that our imaan remains intact and that our feelings of helpnessness do not make us question the will of Allah SWT but thank Allah SWT for His mercy and blessings.  Questioning Allah SWT is a statement of kufr and we have to be very careful in what we say. Very often we take our life for granted and forget Allah SWT's blessings upon us. Let this be a wake up call that death is just round the corner and that we need to be prepared for the hereafter.

Continue making duaa and seeking Allah SWT's mercy and forgiveness.

Take care

Thank you for the well meaning advise Saffiya. However, I dont think my statement as to why Allah did this during Ramadan amounts to kufar!

Even the Angels asked Allah why He wanted to create man when the Angels worshiped Him and served Him day and night. And of course Allah answered them with I know and you do not know. And eventually the Angels saw the wisdom behind Allah's decision to make Adam.

I know Allah has His reason, I just wonder what it is. And of course I dont have the communication with Allah the way the Angels did to find out.

And the reaon I wonder if it's a fair question to ask Allah is, because, I think to some degree or another, all of us know.

In surah ZilZal:

When the earth is shaken to her (utmost) convulsion,
And the earth throws up her burdens (from within),
And man cries (distressed): 'What is the matter with her?'-
On that Day will she declare her tidings:
For that thy Lord will have given her inspiration.
On that Day will men proceed in companies sorted out, to be shown the deeds that they (had done).
Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it!
And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it.

A relative of mine was pulled from the rubble. By the time they got to her, it was Iftar. She asked for a date and water which they brought to her. She chewed the date and sipped water. On her own, she then read the shahada, closed her eyes and passed away. Quietly. She was 19. I feel comforted somewhat, knowing that inshallah, because she breathed her last so peacefully, a beautiful Angel came to get her soul. And she will meet with her Lord pleased with Him, and He being pleased with her inshallah.

Homosexuality, fornication cause of tsunami?
Saudi professor says sinful acts at Christmastime caused disaster

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

© 2005 WorldNetDaily.com

A Muslim Saudi professor says the earthquake and tsunami in south Asia were punishment from Allah for homosexuality and fornication committed by residents and visitors of affected countries at Christmastime.

A television interview of Sheik Fawzan Al-Fawzan, a professor at the Al-Imam University, was translated and posted on the Internet by the Middle East Media Research Institute TV Monitor Project, or MEMRI TV. The interview can be viewed on MEMRI's website.

"These great tragedies and collective punishments that are wiping out villages, towns, cities and even entire countries, are Allah's punishments of the people of these countries, even if they are Muslims," stated Al-Fawzan. "Some of our forefathers said that if there is usury and fornication in a certain village, Allah permits its destruction."

The professor singled out beach resorts as places of sexual sin.

"We know that at these resorts, which unfortunately exist in Islamic and other countries in south Asia, and especially at Christmas, fornication and sexual perversion of all kinds are rampant," he said. "The fact that it happened at this particular time is a sign from Allah. It happened at Christmas, when fornicators and corrupt people from all over the world come to commit fornication and sexual perversion. That's when this tragedy took place, striking them all and destroyed everything. It turned the land into wasteland, where only the cries of the ravens are heard. I say this is a great sign and punishment on which Muslims should reflect."

Al-Fawzan urged Muslims to atone for their sin.

"All that's left for us to do is to ask for forgiveness We must atone for our sins and for the acts of the stupid people among us and improve our condition. We must fight fornication, homosexuality, usury, fight the corruption on the face of the earth, and the disregard of the lives of protected people."

_______________________________________________________

My comments:
Not everyone in Pakistan are homosexuals. But Homosexuality has become so common that it is tolerated.
Homosexuals openly walk the streets wearing womens clothing, demanding money from people.
And people give it to them.
They think that the homosexuals have special powers and will give them "badwa" if not paid.
When Children are born, homosexuals go to the house and dance outside it demanding money, saying that they will curse the child if not paid, and people pay them thinking that the curse of the homo is real
They invade the womens' section in weddings, and demand money.

Yes it is ramadhan, we have to treat what happens due to the EarthQuake Allah sent. But we have to also treat the causes.

It is time for the Pakistanis to stop paying homosexuals and start executing them. because if they don't they risk the punishment of Allah which will distroy everyone.

EARTHQUAKE IN TURKEY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The majestic and Inimitable Qur’an states, "Did the people of the town then feel secure against the coming of Our Punishment by night while they are asleep?" (A’raaf 97)

By the grace of Allah Ta’ala and His taufeeq we had the opportunity to practise on the following advice of the Quraan al-Kareem: "So travel in the land and see the consequences of those rejectors." (Quraan) On the 17th of August 1999 at 3.05 in the morning a devastating earthquake struck several towns in Turkey close to the coast of the Marmara Sea. Since Muslims were not allowed to take relief goods to Turkey unless it was handed over to the Red Cross, we decided to go and assess the situation for ourselves.

After arriving in Istanbul, our local Turkish brothers took us to the affected areas. The first town we visited was Adapazari. The shock of the devastating scene of destruction virtually took our breath away. We were unable to express our mixed emotions of astonishment, sorrow and awe at the tremendous manifestation of Allah Ta’ala’s might and power.

Solid Structures - Concrete, Rubble and twisted steel
These were the most common sights that we saw: solid five storey concrete buildings that had collapsed as if they were pancakes piled up; buildings that had become a massive pile of concrete rubble and twisted steel; buildings that were torn in half and lay on either side; buildings that had fallen on other buildings and caused a domino effect whereby a row of buildings fell one upon the other; buildings whose supporting pillars beneath collapsed thereby crushing cars parked in the basements; buildings that were still intact but totally abandoned (resulting in an eerie ghost-like atmosphere) due to the fear of aftershocks (some 900 aftershocks were recorded).

People’s Reaction
The population of Turkey is 95% Muslim. The people in the affected areas were very pleased to meet Muslims from a foreign country. They welcomed us and appreciated our moral support and Deeni advice. Previously Musjids were averaging half to one row. After the earthquake we were seeing at least four to five rows in some areas while in other areas they were almost full. The elderly men were quite emotional since by nature they are very softhearted and warm people. Some men actually hugged us and cried. Some brothers told us that they had forgotten to make Sajdah to Allah Ta’ala so He made their buildings fall in sajdah.

People told us how they were harshly awakened from their sleep during the early hours. (Refer to the opening verse above). They were thrown from side to side in total darkness since there was an immediate power failure. They virtually tumbled, crawled and fell out of these collapsing buildings while the thick dust which resulted from crumbling buildings added to the problems of poor visibility and inability to breathe. Many came out in only their underwear while some were even naked (Allah Ta’ala save us). A brother told us that he rushed out in such panic he totally forgot his two little daughters in the house. Another said he only remembered his paralysed mother in the house two hours later. This reminds one of the verse in the Quraan Kareem: "On that Day (Qiyaamah) shall a man flee from his own brother, and from his mother and father, and from his wife and children. Every man, that Day, will be in such a state that will make him unmindful of others." (Abasa 34-37).

A building contractor told us personally that he was involved in laying the foundation of the El-Mas (Diamond) Hotel. Just the foundation of this five-star hotel had 350 tons of concrete and steel. He said that if Allah Ta’ala could destroy this building, then He (Ta’ala) can destroy anything. This hotel collapsed completely in a pile of rubble and about 300 people were dragged out, of which approximately 80% were in the state of Zina (fornication) - Ma’ath-Allah. Then there was the banker who arrived back from a business trip to search in the remains of his house for his wife. He found her crushed with his best friend in the shameful act of Zina. In this are great lessons for the ummah, since tragically many of the same vices are prevalent in our society.

Ismit-The best help
We went next to Ismit which is an industrial town. Almost 35% of the industries were destroyed in the earthquake. Here we spent two days and we found that conditions were much the same. We managed to visit a few big camps. People told us that they experienced difficulties in acquiring tents. Prices shot up exorbitantly. Many people were forced to use tree branches and plastic sheeting for shelter. When we saw this we were reminded of the squatters back home. Some of them told us that their homes are still intact but they are too terrified to return to their homes. Yet many owned two or three homes and here they were living like squatters. 45 seconds reduced them to this level. How safe are we? Yet we sacrifice our Aakhirat to purchase a so-called mansion on interest when in seconds it can be reduced to rubble.

We were also fortunate to gain access and visit a big camp which was run by American Missionaries (manned by military guards). These people are given easy access to promote their religion while Muslims are restricted. This camp had very comfortable facilities, nice tents, toilets and feeding tents. Yet when we spoke to some of the young people there, giving them Deeni advice and brotherly moral support, they responded by saying that this visit of ours was the best help anyone had ever given them. Their thirst and zeal for Deen was remarkable.

Istanbul: Panic
We returned briefly to Istanbul and while there, we experienced a brief tremor which lasted less than 10 seconds. We happened to be in a narrow street which had four-storey buildings on either side. The street was crowded with pedestrians and vehicles. To get out of harm’s way of falling buildings was virtually impossible. We came out of the building to find people hurriedly leaving to get out of danger, panic and fear was clearly visible on their faces. Shops closed up and people were busy using cellphones to check on their families. This scene reminded us of Surah Hajj wherein Allah Almighty says, ‘Indeed, the violent shaking of the Hour (of Judgment) is a terrible thing. The day you shall see it, every nursing mother will forget her suckling child, and every pregnant being will drop its load, and you shall see mankind as if in a drunken state, yet they will not be drunk, rather it is the punishment of Allah that is severe.’ (Sur 22-Ver.1-2)

We found out that this tremor measured 5.8 on the Richter scale and 60 people in Ismit died. Ten people died when they jumped out of high buildings. These people were desperate to get out in order to avoid being buried in the buildings.

Golcuk-The Ball of Fire
In the previous towns we heard reports of the naval base in Golcuk that was destroyed. We were anxious to establish this news from the locals in the town. What we discovered was shocking to say the least. The following report was repeatedly verified by the local people while it had been totally concealed in the "free" media:

On the fateful night of 17 August 1999 a big bash (as reported by local caterers present there till midnight) was held at the Turkish Naval Base. It was attended by foreign military advisors (Israeli, British, American and French). Junior officers were being promoted and senior officers were being retired. A junior officer was rebuked for reading the Quraan Kareem and the senior officer threw the Quraan Kareem to the floor (ma’az-Allah). This resulted in a scuffle between them. Furthermore, anti-Islamic sentiments were expressed at this function. (Keep in mind that on 28 February the military govt. had issued a proclamation banning the wearing of the Amaamah (turban), Hijaab, long Jubba and banned Islaamic education for children under the age of 14: We were shown a few madressa buildings that were closed down by the military govt. They had therefore declared war on Islaam). Furthermore, the following statements made by the Officials at this function were repeated to us several times by various people:

It was reported to us that one of the officers said, "We (NATO in the disguise of the Turkish Military) are now in a position to totally eradicate Islam from Turkey." Another also said, "We are in such a secure and fortified position (in the Golcuk Naval Base) that we are now ready to execute our plans for the rest of Eastern Europe (as has been done with Western Europe under the control of Nato) that nothing can stop us now. He then said mockingly, "Not even Allah can stop us now."

We had been told that in the whole of Turkey no place was more strongly fortified than the naval base. It was earthquake-proof and bomb-proof. All the important supplies, equipment, weapons and ammunition were stored there. This is how events that occurred thereafter on that same night were described to us by the local people: "A crying sound first emanated from the earth (as though the earth was crying because of the weight of the sins). Thereafter a terrifying roar was heard from the depths of the earth." One brother said, "The sound was so frightening that it gripped our hearts. We thought it was Qiyaamah (Day of Judgement) and we thought we were finished." A musician also told us that if the sound had lasted for a minute longer, people would have died from the sound alone. The Quraan Kareem declares, "And when our command (of punishment) came, We saved Sh’uaib and those who believed with him because of Mercy from Us, while As-Saihah (the awful sound) seized the wrong-doers so they lay (dead) prostrate in their homes." (Sur.Hud:Ver.94)

In Surah al-Haaqqah (Ver.5), Allah Ta’ala says, "As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the Thaagiyah (an awful shout which exceeds all limits of sound)."

Thereafter people noticed the ground becoming hot with steam coming out in some places. Furthermore, they noticed the tide on the coastline of Golcuk (Sea of Marmara) very low until the sea-bed was visible. Suddenly, a massive ball of fire (lava) erupted from the sea-bed into the sky. Some people noticed the sky crimson-red at that time. The ball of fire landed square on the Naval Base! At the same time the earth had become alive causing waves on land as if it was water and buildings were shaken violently for 45 seconds until they came crashing and crumbling down. This was followed up by a massive thirty to forty metre-high wave which crashed on to the Golcuk coastline and went almost half a kilometre inland. (Satellite pictures showing how far the coastline had been eaten up by this tidal wave had been published in the local Turkish newspaper). This wave virtually swallowed the naval base, a casino and a hotel nearby into the sea.

This entire incident was not reported in the so-called "free media". Who is responsible for this cover-up? Was it because Nato and the Turkish military were so embarrassed after their boastful and arrogant statements that they ordered a complete cover-up? This is the consequence of those who behave arrogantly, just as the people of Aad who built homes out of sturdy mountains and said, "Who is greater in strength than Us?" Allah Ta’ala destroyed them with a fierce and icy wind.

Furthermore, the Turkish brothers who were our guides told us that they had met an American scuba-diver who was sent down to see if there were any traces of the naval-base. He told them that he went down 100 metres and there was no trace of the naval base. The Unchallenged Quran declares, ‘So do you see any remains of them?’ (Surah al-Haaqqah;Ver.8), ‘Do then those who devise evil plots feel secure that Allah will not sink them into the earth, or that the punishment will not seize them from directions they perceive not?’ (Surah an-Nahl Ver.45)

Maskh-Transformation
On the diver’s return toward the surface, he noticed at about 62 metres the remains of the casino. What he saw there shocked him. He saw a person in a frozen position with arms wrapped around a tree trunk while holding a bottle of liquor in his hand. He was wide-eyed in terror and his face was transformed into that of a pig! Another person holding cards in his hand had the same wide-eyed expression, but his face had been transformed into that of a monkey! The diver said he will never again go down there. This may sound like a fairy-tale sucked out of wild imagination. But consider this, Allah Ta’ala says, " ... Those who incurred the curse of Allah and His Wrath those of whom He transformed into monkeys and pigs, those who worshipped false dieties" (Sur.Al-Maidah:Ver.60) Furthermore, Hadrat Anas (r.a.) reports that Rasoolullah (s.a.w.) said: ‘A group of people from my followers will be transformed during the latter period (end-time) into monkeys and pigs.’ They (the Sahabah r.a.) said: ‘O Prophet of Allah, even though they will bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah and that there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allah?’ Rasoolullah (s.a.w.) said: ‘Yes, they will also perform salaah, keep fast and they will perform Hajj.’ ‘Then what will be the problem with them, O Prophet of Allah?’ they asked. Rasoolullah (s.a.w.) replied: ‘They will indulge in musical instruments, dancing girls, drums and they will drink intoxicants. They will spend the night in this condition (intoxicated) and find themselves transformed into monkeys and pigs.’ (Fathul-Baari, commentary of Bukhari Shareef).

One young brother in Golcuk on meeting us said: ‘We deserved this. We deserved this.’ I was stunned at his forthrightness. I asked him: ‘Why do you say this?’ He replied; ‘We lived a comfortable life. Most of us had two or three homes, two or three cars and our pastime was (fornication) zina". In this is a lesson for those who will take heed.

The only media confirmation about the naval base was by a Washington-based intelligence magazine called Executive Intelligence Review (EIR News Services, P.O. Box 17390, Washington, D.C., 20041-0390) which comes out weekly at a cost of $10.This article was given to us on our return from Turkey and it is in the September 3 1999 issue. The article on page 26 is headed: Earthquake derails plan for Turkish move into Caucasus. An extract reads as follows: ‘Parts of the coastal city of Golcuk literally sank into the Sea of Marmara, crippling Turkey’s most important naval base and killing several of its most senior officers.’ On page 27 an insert reads, ‘Turkey quake shakes Nato strategy.’

In this is a lesson for those who will take heed.

Before the Turkish Quake the Jewish led Militry of turkey closed down many Madrasa, How many has the Qadyani led Army of Pakistan closed down?
Zina between men and women is very common in that part of Turkey, how common is Zina between man and man in northen Pakistan?
The Turkish government was working with the Americans to place Eastern Europe under American control. Which governments are Mushraf Working with to PLace Afghanistan under American Control?
What contry is Mushraf handing Islamists to, including female Islamist, even after the rapes of Abu Grab became known?

The dua of the oppressed is accepted, expecially in Ramdhan. What do you think the Women who Mushraf has Handed over to American rapists are praying for this Ramadhan?

Every thing has a price. People talk about what Pakistan gained by helping the Americans in their war against Allah. The Earth Quake is an Example of what Pakistan can lose.

#1) Allah ta'Ala does NOT punish a person for another person's sin.  He is ar-Rahman and ar-Raheem, and it is simply ridiculous to say that 50,000 people have died or are dying because a few handful were gay.

#2) Homosexuality is not as widely practiced in Pakistan as it is in other places of the world, including other Muslim countries.

#3) Homosexuality is not as widely accepted in Pakistan as you are implying.  Not at all.

#4) Hijrahs -- the people you are referring to, who dress up as women, and dance at weddings and give "badduas" if you curse them, are NOT homosexual.  They are HERMAPHRODITES, and it is imperative that you understand the difference, because it'll help you in being much more sympathetic towards this unfortunate group of people.  So, my suggestion to you is that you look up the word.  Here it is again: HERMAPHRODITE.  I, in no way condone their presence at weddings, but please...don't propogate misinformation.  Especially not during Ramadan.

#5) Homosexuality is a disease that has been practiced since the time of Hadhrat Lut (as).  It is not as if northern Pakistan has magically started doing it all of a sudden.

#6) People are dying by the second.  If not by the earthquake, by hypothermia...they are freezing to death.  Do you not see how completely negative your criticism is? And that you are almost countering the effort that is being made by tons of selfless individuals because you are finding it more convenient to copy and paste articles that I could google if I wanted to.

i changed my post's wording from "punish" to "test" indeed we do not know which it is and believe me people the world over are disobeying Allah and a lot more countries have worse problems with homosexuality. remember a correlation does not imply causation.

don't give to the government, and don't give to non-Muslim NGOs. The former will spend it on the bullet-proof and high-tech saloons and even helicopters and exclusive airplanes, and the latter on diverting Muslim children from Islam.

There are well-known Muslim charities that have worked in Bosnia and other places. In Pakistan the most trusted is Edhi, and JO has given a link.

I am sure if JO or panjul agree to handle the money, and give to the charities they know to be fit, it would land in the right place.

I wish I could volunteer to do that, but I have limitations.

Don't worry about the delay. Money and services and items will be needed for a long time to come.

Everyone is right to some extent.

sis panjul, this sort of thing cannot be handled by any country on its own. Having said that, I think all Pakistani (and perhaps all Muslim) governments are guilty of neglecting the needs of their populations, and to have spent the money they get on lining their own pockets or blowing away on useless ego trips.

And we do not protest. We line up toget close to the temporal powers so that we can get a piece of the cake, too.

The prophet [saw] is reported to have said something like:

A nation's leader is its servant.

Our leaders lord it over us.

And we are not angels ourselves.

There is a lot of injustice in our parts of the world; there is a lot of hypocricy in our part of the world, and we are to blame. It is only today that the Supreme Court was able to order Punjab Government to register an FIR (First Information Report) against the SP Abdullah and rapist of Sonia Naz. Why did the Punjab Government not register it for four months, and why did not the religious people speak up against this injustice?

sis JO, Muslim societies have developed a lot of sinful practices. Rural areas are not that innocent any more. The time of the last great flood in Pakistan, a town in Abbotabad that was buried was known to have been a den of open rebellion against Allah.

bro abdullahcohn, it isn't necessarily one event that would have triggered this earthquake. This rebellion against Allah in our societies is many-faceted. Even conservative Muslims are in rebellion against the deen, because they do not give the rights due to weaker sections of the society.

Halal and haram do not worry us. I have seen it for more than 20 years. Even the label of pig source now does not cause us to stop using a product. It is money and goods and enjoyment at all costs.

They have rescued more people, including three children from the rubble.

Timbuktu, I have relatives in that place too. It's called Dadar. It's absolutely the most gorgeous place I have been to so far. I went to visit my cousin’s grandma there and decided to look at the place where the flood had occurred. It looked so peaceful. Like nothing had ever happened there. In fact, it was almost like I had remembered it from my previous visit. It's a small town, with most homes far apart and everyone knows practically everyone.

Sure Dadar is in the mountains but the place is not what one would call "backwards." Most people are educated and "advanced" as they call it over here. In Shinkiari, which is more populated, women are allowed to stand for elections, but women can't vote. The reason that they give is if there's violence at the polls the women won't be in harm's way. In Dadar, on the other hand, quite a lot of women stand up in the local elections and win! And they have never revoked the right to vote from women there. Looking at these two towns, one would expect the opposite from them.

The stream where the flood developed is very dry, in fact, almost no water there at all. I couldn’t' believe it was able to fill up so quickly and overflow the banks. (Looking at it, one can see it must have been a huge stream a long time ago and quite deep, almost like a small river.)

Subhanallah, Allah can do anything. If you came and looked at it, you would wonder too where that water came from.

And the story I am about to relate is not some made up story. It was published in the local newspaper. A doctor was interviewed whose wife had died in the flood. He was asked about what they were doing when the flood occurred. He said that he woke up to find his wife missing from the bed. He went to look for her and found her in the living room watching a movie. He reminded her to pray, that she hadn't prayed and she ignored him. So he went back. A few seconds later there was a rumbling and then everything happened so quickly that he was still unable to digest it all.

We never know when our last moments on earth will be. We don’t know in what state we will meet Allah. Will our last moments on earth will be in obedience to Him or in disobedience?

May Allah guide us all.

Just some Hadiths/Ayahs regarding difficulties Muslims face in this life and how Allah SWT instructs in how to deal with them.

The Holy Prophet, saw, has said:
“When a person recites ‘Inna I illahe’ in the face of some suffering, Allah mitigates his suffering, grants him with a good end, and awards him in return the thing he likes.”

“If a Muslim bears patiently any trouble of the body or heart, ailment, sorrow or bereavement, may it be so minor as pricking of a thorn, Allah forgives his sins.” [Bukhari-Muslim]

“And We shall certainly test you with fear and hunger, loss of life and property, and [O Prophet,] give glad tidings to those who show patience in the face of such ordeals and say, ‘We are from Allah and to Him we have to return.’ They shall be rewarded generously by their Sustainer and their Lord’s favor and blessings on them. Verily, such people are on the true path.” [2: 156]

According to Hadhrat Anas, Prophet Muhammad, saw, has said: “The severer the suffering, the greater would be the recompense. When Allah loves some people, in order to purify them, He puts them under trial. As such those who acquit themselves well in this trial, with them Allah is pleased, and those who grumble and express displeasure with Allah, with them Allah becomes displeased.” [Tirmidi]

“If a Muslim bears patiently any trouble of the body or heart, ailment, sorrow or bereavement, may it be so minor as pricking of a thorn, Allah forgives his sins." [Bukhari-Muslim]

Hazrat Abu Musa Ash’ari reports that the Prophet, saw, said: “When a person loses his child, Allah enquires from the angels, “Did you take away the life of the child of My servant?” The angels say, “Yes, O Lord :” Allah asks again: “Did you extract the life of his dearest child?” The Angels reply in the affirmative. He then asks: “what did My servant say?” The angels submit “In his hour of trial, he praised Thee O Lord, and recited ‘Inna Lillahe wa Inna ilaihe raje’oon’. Allah then commands: “build a house for this servant of Mine, and name it the ‘house of Thanks’. [Tirmidi]

Allah (SWT) has given us an opportunity to spend from our wealth and help those in need in this blessed month!  Let us not waste this opportunity.  And many of you have touched on the important lessons that we can learn from this tragedy, i.e. preparing for the herafter, commanding the right and forbidding evil, and avoiding haraam things.

Personally there is only one charity that I donate to and that is Islamic Relief, the link that Timbuktu mentioned.

Islamic Relief is awesome.  The only reason I mentioned Muslim Aid was because they were the first Muslim NGO that  I saw on the scene.  And within hours they were giving $3M to the government to help with the rescue and relief operations.  I thought it was hecka cool.

I personally would not give to the government.  I think NGOs are less biased, and probably more trustworthy.  Another way people are doing it is raising their own money, buying their own supplies, renting their own trucks, and driving to affected areas on their own.

Creates a little bit of disorganization, but there is rampant mistrust of the government (from what I can tell), so people aren't risking sending the money to them.

[slm] thanks bhaloo and others, my family is all right. Our neighbors on the street had relatives in Margalla Towers - that family of five is dead.

inna lillahi wa inna ilehi raaje`oon

The double road in front of Margalla main Towers was opened to traffic today, but access to the side where the blocks collapsed blocks is still restricted. The cranes and eart moving machinery is now clearing the rubble together with the dead bodies and limbs etc. Hospitals in Ismabad/ rawalpimdi are full, and new temporary ones have been opened, eg. the Madinatul Hujjaj (the buildings where Hujjaj gather and stay for instructions have been converted into hospital).

Salaam O Alykum Dear Brs. & Srs.

I pray all is well Insha'Allah.

I got back from Muzafarabad last night.  I am
currently in Islamabad.  My journey to Muzafarabad was
long as blocks of road slid off the mountains due to
the earthquake.  Rain and hail storm the night
before did not help either.  Trucks, busses and cars
were seen every so many miles stuck in the hilly roads
or sliding off as the muddy roads gave in.

As we entered the city of Muzafarabad we were welcomed
by a strong stinch of decaying bodies, buried alive
under the flattened buildings.  The atmosphere was
full of chaotic sounds such as cries of families,
yelling for aid by helpless men, women and children.
The moment I entered the city we came across a
building and the army had found yet another body from
the rubble badly crushed as the concrete fell on this
man.  Not a soul was in the city without face masks as
one would throw up due to the stinch of decaying
bodies.  Any human being would be teary eyes after
seing the situation of the people of that city.

I moved on to IR office.  There I met an employee who
had lost 23 family members in the mountains of
kashmir.  Yet, he has been there from the 2nd day
helping others.  Such is the morale of people of that
region currently.   Almost all local employees of IR
have had a loss in this disastor.  I was told that the
first two days after the quake were depicting the end
of time as no one soul had time to look at another as
they all were trying to save their own lives.  The
city was constatly rocked with over 400 after shocks.

As you see the pictures that I am sending as part of
another emial, you will see structure after structure
flattend to the ground.  Each building has its own
story, each building has a body trapped, unaccessable
to this date.

A doctor told me that his team of 20 doctors were the
first ones in Muzafarabad after the quake.  When he
reached the cricket ground he saw over 2,500 people
lying on the ground waiting for medical help.  In the
course of next 3 days this team amputated over a 1,000
individuals to save their lives without all the proper
anesthesia and medications.

One of the picutres has a kid holding the photograph
of his older brother and cousin crushed while they
were in school.

Girls in a local school got trapped in the school
building, I was told a figure of over 50+ girls.
Their cries faded away by Wednesday.  IR staff
mentioned that the sounds of the girls cries will
haunt them for the rest of their life.

I went to the camp site, each tent had their own
stories and each family had their own share of losses.
Not one family left without a loss.  I met a man who
worked in another city, said all of his brothers
passed away so now he has to support 4 families (avg.
family size 7-8')'.

A man walked into the city of Muzafarabad after a hike
of full day carrying his mother on his back with
broken limbs.  He had to return back to his village as
there were more family members he had left behind.

There is a picture of a woman in black chadar.  She
lost two of her sons.  Another husband and wife
sitting cooking together lost all their kids.  A kid
standing in front of the IR truck lost his parents and
was being taken care off by a neighbor.

You will see a picture of a green mountain with
houses all over it.  Next picture is of a white
mountain.  Half of the green mountain flattened out
wiping out all of the houses on it and burrying an
entire village in the valley below.  There are many
mountains where half of it caved in, these are not
small mud slides these are mountains that partially
flattend and became dirt.

I could go on and on but I thought I would share a
little bit of my expierience during my stay in
Muzafarabad.  Baagh, Balakot, Manshera and hundreds of
other smaller villages throughout the mountanous area
are unaccounted for and no relief has arrived there.

IR has a staff of 32 medical team that had gone on a
project to Neelum Valley and are currently stuck there
as the only bridge that leads into the village
collapsed.

I am sure all of you guys are but another reminder
please keep all the people affected in your du'a.  May
Allah not have anyone go through such a catastrophe.

Please forgive me if I said something wrong.  Please
keep me in your du'a.

For many, the help did not reach in time.

It is freezing cold out there - hunger and disease are taking their toll.

Amputations have been taking place in the open, without anasthesia, without proper tools, without medicine.

And the helicopters will be grounded soon.

The money for their operations has dried up.

Soon there will be no way to help.

PERSPECTIVE: EARTHQUAKES
Himalayan Seismic Hazard

Roger Bilham, Vinod K. Gaur, Peter Molnar
R. Bilham and P. Molnar are in the Department of Geological Sciences and the Cooperative Institute for Research in environmental Sciences, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309, USA. E-mail: bilham@colorado.edu. V. K. Gaur is in the Indian Institute for Astrophysics, Bangalore 560 034, India.

Five major earthquakes have visited India in the past decade (see the table), culminating in the devastating Bhuj earthquake of 26 January 2001. That earthquake in particular called attention to the hazards posed by buildings not designed to withstand major but obviously probable earthquakes. It also focused the eyes of the public away from a part of India where even worse damage and loss of life should be expected-the Himalayan arc (see the figure). Several lines of evidence show that one or more great earthquakes may be overdue in a large fraction of the Himalaya, threatening millions of people in that region.

A wealth of geophysical evidence demonstrates that south of the Himalaya, the top surface of India's basement rock flexes and slides beneath the Himalaya-not steadily but in lurches during great earthquakes (see the inset in the first figure) (1, 2). This pattern resembles that found where lithospheric plates beneath oceanic regions converge rapidly: that is at deep-sea trenches, where the ocean floor flexes down seaward of the trench, the entire oceanic lithosphere plunges deep into the Earth's mantle, and great earthquakes occur most commonly. Extreme examples are the great earthquakes in Chile in 1960 and in Alaska in 1964. Only during such earthquakes does the entire plate boundary rupture.

Second, Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements show that India and southern Tibet converge at 20 ± 3 mm/year (3). A 50 km-wide region centered on the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau strains to absorb about 80% of this convergence. This region also shows localized vertical movement (4), and small earthquakes are most common here (5). The surrounding Himalaya accommodates the remaining 20%. Two meters of potential slip in earthquakes thus accumulate each century. In contrast, control points in southern India and southernmost Nepal approach each other no faster than a few mm/year (6). As the Bhuj earthquake shows, this deformation, although slow, is far from negligible.

Third, in the Himalaya the potential slip accumulates almost entirely as elastic rather than inelastic strain, which would permanently deform the rock. Analyses of deformed river terraces in the foothills of the Himalaya demonstrate an advance of 21 ± 3 mm/year in southern Nepal (7) during the past ca. 10,000 years. The minor difference between this rate, measured at the southern edge of the Himalaya and applicable to durations spanning many great earthquakes, and the 20 ± 3 mm/year measured with GPS implies that at most a small fraction (<10%) of the strain could be inelastic. Earthquakes must therefore release most, if not all, of India's 2 m/century convergence with southern Tibet.

Little is known about Himalayan earthquakes in the 18th century and before. Great earthquakes in the Himalayan region occurred in 1803, 1833, 1897, 1905, 1934 and 1950 (see the figure). The 1803 earthquake caused damage between Delhi and Lucknow. Recent reëvaluations of the 1833 Nepal (8) and 1905 Kangra earthquakes (9, 10) indicate that rupture lengths were less than 120 km, smaller than previously believed (1, 11). An analysis of geodetic deformation during the 1897 earthquake (12) confirms that it occurred 100 km south of the Himalaya and therefore did not relieve strain in that belt. Thorough studies of the destruction, and thus the intensity of shaking for the 1934 Bihar-Nepal earthquake were carried out in Nepal (13) and India (14). Together with geodetic constraints (15), they imply that a 200 to 300 km long segment of eastern Nepal ruptured (16). Similarly, locations of aftershocks of the 1950 Assam earthquake imply a rupture zone ~200 km long, with complexities at its eastern end (2, 17).
Although the major earthquakes that have occurred along the Himalaya since 1800 differed in dimensions. there is no doubt that they destroyed vast regions along the front of the Himalaya. More important today, however, less than half of the Himalaya (see the figure) has ruptured in that period.

Surface ruptures have not been found for any of these events. There are thus no geological constraints of recent ruptures, and geologists are concerned that paleoseismic investigations across Himalayan surface faults may yield misleadingly long recurrence intervals. Moreover, repeat surveys of trigonometrical points installed before the 1905, 1934, and 1950 earthquakes have yet to be made with modern techniques. The amplitudes of long-period seismic waves have provided quantitative measures of the seismic moments (a measure of earthquake size) of the 1934 and 1950 earthquakes (17). Knowledge of the lengths of the ruptures and sensible estimates of the width from various sources yield ~4 m of slip in 1934 and ~8 m of slip in 1950 (18). Uncertainties in these estimates permit slip as small as 2 m in 1934 and as high as 16 m for 1950, but such amounts would be unusual for earthquakes of their magnitude. These less direct measurements thus imply an average slip of ~4 m during great earthquakes.
Despite the diverse quality of data in the past two centuries, we can be sure that we are not missing any great event since 1800. This permits us to estimate the minimum slip potential that has accumulated along the Himalaya since the last grreat earthquake (see the figure). We divide the central Himalaya into 10 regions, with lengths roughly corresponding to those of great Himalayan ruptures (~220 km). With a convergence rate of 20mm/year along the arc, six of these regions currently have a slip potential of at least 4 m-equivalent to the slip inferred for the 1934 earthquake. This implies that each of these regions now stores the strain necessary for such an earthquake. Moreover, the historic record (19-21) records no great earthquake throughout most of the Himalaya since 1700, suggesting that the slip potential may exceed 6 m in some places.

Given that geological investigations of the 1905 and 1934 ruptures did not reveal surface ruptures but that river terraces have been warped and the foothills have grown during prehistoric great earthquakes, we cannot rule out the possibility that parts of the Himalaya have not ruptured in major earthquakes for 500 to 700 years and will be associated with slip exceeding 10 m. The mid-Himalayan 20th century earthquakes would then have been atypically small.

The weakest link in the arguments above is the uncertainty in the amount of slip during great earthquakes. Yet, because the longer the time since the previous earthquake, the larger the potential slip will be to drive the next one, if the fraction of the Himalaya due for a major earthquakes is smaller than the 55% we assign it, the more severe those less frequent great earthquakes will be. Even if only one segment has stored potential slip comparable to that of the 1950 Assam earthquake, the largest intracontinental earthquake in recorded history (18), a replication of that earthquake along the more populous segments of the Himalaya would be devastating.

The population of India has doubled since the last great Himalayan earthquake in 1950. The urban population in the Ganges Plain has increased by a factor of ten since the 1905 earthquake, when collapsing buildings killed 19,500 people (9). Today, about 50 million people are at risk from great Himalayan earthquakes, many of them in towns and villages in the Ganges plain. The capital cities of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Pakistan and several other cities with more than a million inhabitants are vulnerable to damage from some of these future earthquakes.

The enforcement of building codes in India and Pakistan mitigates the hazards to this large population, but a comparison between fatalities in the 1819 Katchch and 2001 Bhuj earthquakes is not encouraging. The population of Kachch has increased by a factor of ten. Two thousand fatalites occurred in 1819 (22), compared to the 18,000 confirmed and possibly 30,000 unconfirmed fatalities this year. The implemented seismic code apparently did not lessen the percentage of the population killed. Like the Himalayan earthquakes, the Bhuj event occurred in an identified zone of heightened seismic hazard. Projecting these figures to just one of the possibly several overdue Himalayan earthquakes (for example a repeat of the Kangra 1905 event) yields 200,000 predictable fatalities. Similar conclusions have been reached by Arya (23). Such an estimate may be too low by an order of magnitude should a great earthquake occur near one of the megacities in the Ganges Plain.

Danger zone. This view of the Indo-Asian collision zone shows the estimated slip potential along the Himalaya and urban populations south of the Himalaya (U.N. sources). Shaded areas with dates next to them surround epicenters and zones of rupture of major earthquakes in the Himalaya and the Kachchh region, where the 2001 Bhuj earthquake occurred. Red segments along the bars show the slip potential on a scale of 1 to 10 meters, that is, the potential slip that has accumulated since the last recorded great earthquake, or since 1800. The pink portions show possible additional slip permitted by ignorance of the preceding historic record. Great earthquakes may have occurred in the Kashmir region in the mid 16th century (21) and in Nepal in the 13th century (8). The bars are not intended to indicate the locus of specific future great earthquakes, but are simply spaced at equal 220-km intervals, the approximate rupture length of the 1934 and 1950 earthquakes. Black circles show population centers in the region; in the Ganges Plain, the region extending ~300 km south and southeast of the Himalaya, the urban population alone exceeds 40 million. (inset) This simplified cross section through the Himalaya indicates the transition between the locked, shallow portions of the fault that rupture in great earthquakes, and the deeper zone where India slides beneath Southern Tibet without earthquakes. Between them, vertical movement, horizontal contraction, and microearthquake seismicity are currently concentrated (3-5).

Those high up in the valleys are now cut off. Helicopters have been grounded.

Now it is up to the Mujahideen only, who will carry the relief on their shoulders in deep snow.
