| [slm] I would like to know the order of the suras based on their date of revelation, i.e. their chronological order. Is there a website where this information is available? My search tells me that their is not an absolute consensus regarding this matter. Information, comments, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. [wlm] |

| [slm] How can there be a chronoligical order of the Surahs. Many Ayahs were revealed at different times, and the prophet [saw] told the Sahaba to place the recently ayahs at such and such point in such and such Surahs. There is a broad classification of the Surahs as Makki or Madani, but that too isn't always absolute, because there are some ayahs that were revealed in Makka and placed in those we call Madani. This classification is based on the majority of the ayahs in a particular Surah being revealed in Makkah or Madinah. Most copies of the Quran, including the internet ones have this classification. But there definitely exists some info on the time of revelation of many ayahs, but that is a scholarly pursuit, and if that is what you are after, one will have to ask some scholar in this field. |

| Thank you Timbuktu for your response. I was perplexed about this topic and I got worried when no one had replied. I knew that different ayat were revealed at different times, but I thought, for example, that all the ayat for one surah would be revealed first before moving onto another surah ... I didn't know that ayats belonging to various suras were revealed at all different times and then they were assembled into suras according to what the prophet [saw] indicated. I guess the confusion might stem from the fact that an internet search will yield certain websites that have the suras listed in chronological order! But these websites do not agree on this order.
