Letter of Resignation (I quit)

I started a job 2 weeks ago, 55 miles away from my home.  They want me to diagnose some problems with their software (even though I don't have the source code for it, and no instructions, and they want it done as soon as possible).   All of this takes time, I tell them.  I'm trying to contact the people that wrote the software and any correspondence they had with my predecessor, but that is really slow.   Anyways, the director is upset as to why it's not working.  The drive is pretty tiring also.  Now another company contacted me and they are 3 miles away, and have practically matched the salary being offered at the other place, and furthermore they have a place to pray inside the work (as there are quite a bit of Muslims working there).

My question is how do I write a letter of resignation, and what should I say, so that I'm at least on good terms with them and that I have an opportunity to work for them in the future if our paths should ever cross?  I'm planning on giving them the letter this coming Friday, and quitting that day.  It would be a  good time also as almost all of management is off on some tropical island for an offsite meeting.

wlm,

never burn your bridges i say... i wrote a resignation letter once... i'll message to you.. btw just tell them the drive is too much and be honest i'm sure they'll understand... one guy at my last job was driving from massachussets to new york.. it wasn't surprising he quit after 2 months!!

btw don't just give them the letter.. just tell them first the letter is like the last thing you do so they have the dates and stuff in writing

I can't find my letter of resignation, otherwise I would send it to you.  It was a work of art.  It was about 6 lines long, and it took me 3 days to write it lol.  If I find it, I'll send it to you.  Resigning was the hardest thing EVER.  But it was the best decision I made in my whole life, since I was incredibly miserable working there.

Anyway just tell them that you are giving them your official 2 week (3 week? -- look at your contract) notice of your intention to leave your current job.  Be specific with the title of your job.

I would keep it short.  Just thank them for the opportunity to work with them, and say that the associations you have made during your employment there will be memorable for years to come.

DO NOT give them a reason for leaving in writing.  You can speak to them about that, because they will ask you, no doubt...and you need to have an explanation ready.  But don't put it in writing, because it goes into your record.

Personally, if you don't know them too well, and don't feel attached to them in any way, then I really think you should just hand them the letter, and THEN explain.  Instead of explaining, and then telling them that you will give them a letter soon.

You need to be prepared that they won't like you too much after that, and may not want you to stay for the notice period.  In which case, they might even escort you out the door (happened to my brother's friend in Washington) to prevent you from gathering your stuff before you leave.  So clear up your desk in advance too.

Ah, jobs.

Good luck, inshaAllah.

Wasalaam.

According to my job agreement, employment maybe terminated at any time between myself and the employer.  I've only been there 2 weeks, and I start the new place in a week.  I'm going to try to fix their problem this week and then give them notice on the last day.  It's just a little difficult figuring out what content to put in the letter.  I'm not going to even mention this company on my resume.   Hmmm, but I guess you guys are right that they will probably be upset with me.  In which case I could say that the drive has proven to be too much.

Dear X

I am writing to inform you that I will be terminating my employment with (company name), as of (date).

I have found my time with (company name) to be both an edifying and enjoyable experience. However I am experiencing difficulty with the 55 mile commute, a journey which I had not anticipated to be quite so arduous.

I would like to take this oppurtunity to thank you for the time at (company name), and hope that in the future under different circumstances we may be able to work together.

Sincerely,

==================

That's my template, it's basically what I use, however if totally annoyed with the employer the first paragraph is all they get.

I like the letter Fozia.  I'm going to use part of it, it's just this part, that I want to try and reword:

However I am experiencing difficulty with the 55 mile commute, a fact which I had not anticipated to be quite so arduous.

If i say that, they won't ever hire me again.  How can I word things so that maybe they will still be interested in me?  The other place I'm going to also is offering me quite a bit more money (they matched the salary, and gave me a huge sign on bonus).

Brother Bhaloo, first off you better complete this source code diagnoses before you leave - to leave on good ground ...otherwise to be honest- you wont be leaving on good ground. I think?

I think you can mention someting like the 55 mile commute is arduous, and that you still valued your time there and consider the company to be great etc, and perhaps one day , once another opportunity arises there, you would be honored if they would consider you...sister fozia put it well:)

I feel like quitting my job now as well:)

wish you all the best.

I tend to stick as close to the facts as possible when giving in notice for termination of employment.

I agree re-word the bits you are uncomfortable with.
I don't think mentioning the journey as the main reason for leaving will render you un-employable by this company, as your circumstances may well change in the future, and you could end up nearer this company at some point, which would mean a shorter commute.....No idea how you managed a 55 mile commute in the first place :o

Like I said, I have used this letter a great deal...OK 3 times personally and a few times for my husband (did I mention my wifely duties include PA to the Amir of the house??).
I once scribbled the first paragraph out on a page ripped from a notebook, because the manager refused to allow me to take my holiday during my exams. Result; as I only worked once a week at the time, I got the day I wanted off :P

How about
==============
My main reason for discontinuing in the capacity of (job title), is the 55 mile commute. I feel the time taken to complete this journey twice a day would be better utilised in completing set tasks for which you have employed me. I therefore feel, I am unable to effectively fulfill the role of (job title), due to this impediment.
=================

Dunno if any of the above makes sense...But it makes it look like you are looking out for them as opposed yourself.
BTW don't mention your new job if that is what you were thinking of doing, it is not necessary.
And Congratulations on your new job too.

PS your american aintcha?? Make sure you change the spelling accordingly

Seriously...don't give them a reason in writing!  Just tell them you're quitting...it's cool.

If I sent that letter I would make a few corrections.
1). I would spell sincerely correctly
2). That isn't how you spell Bhaloo
3). My name isn't Bhaloo. :)

I think it has!  Well at least you can help everyone with the letter writing. :)  Sticking as close to the facts as possible is a good idea.

You're probably right, and it looks like I won't be able to fix it!  I shouldn't stress myself out too much, right?  I tried, but there wasn't enough time, and people weren't being too co-operative.

I'd be more shy telling them I quit then writing out a letter.  Also, as far as I remember, when I terminate employment at the company I have to send them a letter.

Get this, they made me take some psychology/personality test before working.  Did you ever find your letter of resignation?

I don't know why I'm thinking of all these humorous letters in my head like:

Dear Dudes,
It's been real, but i gotta bail.
Later days,
The Surfer Dude

or

To his majesty and his courtyard,
Your highness, I have failed you, and the only responsible course of action is for me to be sent to the gallows.
Your pleasant peasant,
Arshad

I guess I have to come up with it by the end of  tomorrow.  I feel bad, I met with all these directors and CEO, and the recruiter that got me the job, he's going to lose out on his commission (I think it's like $30,000).

Bhaloo, i'm shocked that you're taking this so seriously. When i once felt guilty about resigning at a company, i just brought to mind the fact that if i was surplus to their requirements they wouldn't hesitate a moment to get rid of me.

Bearing that in mind removes all emotions from the process of writing the letter.

The fact is I wasn't surplus to the company.  One of their overseas customers was counting on a problem getting fixed ASAP, and I was the guy that was supposed to do it.

Anyways, I told them that I'm quitting, and gave a letter.  They were stunned.  They wanted to know what it would take for them to keep me there.  When I factored in the all the costs, it was actually a pretty substantial amount, so they didn't do it.

The new place I'm at has so many Muslims, and we pray in jamaat in an office.  They also have a basketball and volleyball court on the premises.
