AsalamAlayKum Peace and E-Greetings be upon you all. I need your help, and likewise this will help you. I am creating a giant banner with the equivalent of 'Eid Mubarak' in as many languages as possible for use on Eid al Fitr here in Toronto. It is not as straightforward as looking it up online or using a translation software and I'm even having trouble googling this all up. I've begun by asking muslims I catch in the Masjid what they say for Eid Mubarak in their own culture and language. Here's my list so far: English -- Eid Mubarak Turkish -- Bayarminiz Mubarek Olscun Somali -- Ciid Mubaarak (transliterated with latin script obviously) Eid Sa`id -- Arabic (translation of 'Happy Festival' or close to it) Please add to this list in the format above and/or link to a gif/jpg of it if it's not in a script/font that shows up here on jannah.org when you preview your post. Salam ~ HiMY! ~ |

[slm] Mubarak is Persian, probably Arabic too, although by HUsni Mubarak's nickname, probably the Arabs want to get this word out of the Arabic dictioanry. Urdu has many roots, and Persian is one of them, so Mubarak is inded an Urdu word, and "Eid Mubarak" is an Urdu greeting.
['akhtar' = 'eid]
really. akhtar in Arabic and Persian and Urdu is "star". How come it became "Eid" in Pushto, which is also derived from Persian? |

eid mubarik is not english ... its arabic ... in english it would be happy hoildays ... because niether eid nor mubarik are english words... theyre arabic mubarik comes from mabrook which means congratulations.... and no us arabs dont feel the need to take it out of our language simply because of one dictators last name :P eid sa3eed... means happy holidays eid kareem .... means literally holy holidays, which alot of arabs say as well |

[slm] Ya HiMY, If you are looking for Eid greetings that have no Arabic words or spellings of EID and MUBARAK, then the Somali correct word for Eid Mubarak is: Ciid Wanagsan. Check and confirm with your Somali friends in Toronto. Ciid means Eid. Wanagsan means good or happy depending on the context in which it is said. Hence if you translate it directly, the meaning would be useless but the literal meaning is Happy Eid! Now, I wish I could give you Eid Mubarak in Swahili (Kiswahili) but it is the same except Eid is spelt as Idd in Swahili. So, it is Idd Mubarak. Both Somali and Swahili have plenty of Arabic words.
[slm] the Somali correct word for Eid Mubarak is: Ciid Wanagsan. Hence if you translate it directly, the meaning would be useless but the literal meaning is Happy Eid![wlm]
Impressive!!! Indeed, Ciid Wanagsan is the proper way of saying Eid Mubarak in Somali' even though people will perfectly understand you, if you say; Eid Sa3eed or Eid Mubarak as well insha'Allah. Hope this helps. wassalaam. |

WalayKumSalam Everyone, Peace and e-Greetings be upon you all. Thank you all for your help, it really eases my burden in hunting down all the sayings and various eid greetings as I am busy with volunteering for Toronto's http://www.GTAEid.com . PLEASE keep adding as many greetings as you can, InshAllah, I'll upload and share the final more polished looking eid greetings in various languages flyer/poster/graphic. And if anyone wants to take it upon themselves to create and upload a 300 dpi graphic which I can then enlarge to 20 feet wide by whatever feet tall, even better. Salam and Last-Sunday-In-Ramadan-1426-Mubarak. ~ HiMY! ~ |
