Your Checklist of Inner Response to the Qur’an

Studying the Qur'an must involve your whole 'person'. The more important part of your 'person' is your inner self. This inner self the Qur'an calls the Qalb or the 'heart'. It was the heart of the Prophet (peace be on him) that first received the Qur'anic message. Below are a few tips that will greatly increase the intensity, quality, dynamism of your heart’s relationship and participation with the Qur’an.

Say to Yourself:

   * My Qur'an reading will not be truly Tilawah unless my inner self participates in it as Allah desires it to participate.
   * I am in Allah's presence; He is seeing me.
   * I am hearing from Allah.
   * Allah addresses me directly, through His Messenger, when I read the Qur'an.
   * Every word in the Qur'an is meant for me.
   * I am conversing with Allah when I am reading the Qur'an.
   * Allah will surely give me all the rewards He has promised me for reading the Qur'an and following it.

7 Acts of Heart & Body when Studying the Qur’an

   * Response of Your Heart: Let your heart become alive and respond to whatever the Qur'an says
   * Response of Your Tongue: Let your tongue express in words the appropriate response to what you read in the Qur'an.
   * Tears in Your Eyes: Let the response in your heart overflow through your eyes tears of joy or of fear an answer to what you read in the Qur'an.
   * Postures of Your Body: Adopt an outward posture that reflects your inner reverence, devotion and submission for the words of your Lord.
   * Read with Tartil: Reading the Qur'an with Tartil means reading without haste, distinctly, calmly, in measured tone, with thoughtful consideration, wherein tongue, heart and limbs are in complete harmony.
   * Self Purification: Purify yourself as much as you can: Purity of intention, heart and limbs from sins which may incur the displeasure of the Qur'an's Sender.
   * Seeking Allah's Help (Du'a): Ask Allah for His help, mercy, guidance and protection while you read the Qur'an.
