Eid Diaries 1426/2005 !!

[slm]

Thursday, November 3rd, Eid has arrived.  I consider myself extremely fortunate in that I'm going to a masjid that has one of the most beautiful speakers, Sheikh Yassar.  His way in dealing with people is so beautiful, mashallah, especially in his kind treatment of women and children.  And furthermore he is careful not to innovate in the religion, alhumdullilah.  He also has a PHD in psychology.   The prayer is scheduled to start at 7:30am, it starts at 7:40am, but this is still good as many of the masajids around the area promise to start at a certain time but start half an hour later.  As the sheikh begins to recite surah fatihah he starts to sob, and then continues on.  And as the congregation says AMEEN, I'm reminded of the hadith:

When the Imaam says Aameen then say Aameen for indeed the one whose Aameen coincides with the Aameen of the Angels will have his previous [minor] sins forgiven.
Saheeh Muslim [Eng. Trans. 1/225 no. 809]

During the khutbah he talked about the calamaties that have happened throughout the world, especially the earthquake in Pakistan.  He tells us of a letter he received of a Pakistani man, who gave an account of what happened.  The man feared for his life and thought this was judgement day as he saw buildings collapse around him.  His wife died under the rubble and his 14 month child was trapped under some rubble.  His children were at school trapped in some building.  The sheikh asked, can you imagine what kind of Eid that man must be having?  He went on to talk about this subject a bit more, and how fortunate we should be for the belssings that we do have.    Indeed we are truly blessed, but most do not thank their Lord.  He went on to talk about forgiveness, and also how we should have good relations with our family and distant relatives especially during this time.  After the khutbah and some huggings, the men made a dash out the door, some off to their works, others to the back of the parking lot for some arabic pistachio filled cookies and krispy kreme glazed donuts and coffee.  Alhumdullilah it was good to see so many Muslims, about 2000 showed up.  I recognized a lot of friends, basketball buddies, new buddies from work, and friends of my parents.  It was nice to get a chance to hug them all and chat for a while.   Then it was off to a breakfast that one of my mom's friends had prepared.  There was puri, mithai flown in from Tahoor's in Chicago, chaana, chicken tikkah, sawaynya (correct my spelling Timbuktu and JustOne), haleem, a chocolate cake, chicken patties, shami kabobs, and luddoos.  (TQ I'm sure it's not as extravagant as what you've prepared for your family.  :)  ).  But I thought it was still good.   I felt really sleepy after that and here I am.  There's 2 big Eid carnivals in the community, one is Friday and another Sunday, and insha'Allah I'll be going to both of those.  Then saturday there is a big eid dinner with all these family members and distant relatives that I'll be going to.  And sometime on the weekend I'll be playing basketball, insha'Allah.

I wore a black shalwaar kamiz with a long matching black coat that was open in the front and made of the same material as the shalwaar kamiz.  The shalwaar kamiz had some "kaam" down the chest area and the coat did too on both sides of the opening from the top to the bottom and then along the bottom of the coat.

So who's next? ???

 [slm]

Let's see, waiting up last night to see when I'd celebrate Eid. Alas it as today- so  I could celebrate with all of my family because some started on Tuesday.  I woke up this morning to this noodly thing my mom makes every Eid morning. Yummy. I downed that and some juice and my vitamins.

Anyhow, my sister and her husband were running late and finally got to my house. When we finally go to the masjid about 7:40 am, we got a parking spot right away so that was great. I guess we weren't all that late for the 8am prayer. Anyhow, we started about 8:30  :(

I went up the three flights of stairs and there greeted my aunts and others at the masjid that I know. Prayers went well. Theres this dude- I'm not sure of his role at the masjid-but before salat every year at eid he gives a speech about how this particular community needs to do more for the masjid and for islamic education/social work etc. So he had his time (granted he was correct in everything he said)- then the imam took over. Some kids kept running through the lines and through my legs throughout salat! Oh wells.

Afterwards, we got some sweet stuff and left to go home.

At home, I ate again some chicken and rice about 10am:) THen decided to clean my room for the day. Then I had to take a drive to Long Island to drop off some food for some folks there. Came back home in time for maghrib and dinner with my parents.

My parents are the best:) Love them to death. Days like today I realize How lucky I am to have had them so long in my life. Inshaallah, I'll have a lot more time to spend with them and many many more ramadans and eids.

So we sat down to eat some goat curry, dahl puri roti, some cake and tea.

Now I'm just relaxing. No festivals here though .....

OH since we are discussing clothes? I thought that was awfully strange bro Bhaloo. ::) But since we are, I wore some cream colored pants, this indian shirt thing in cream and baby blue, and a baby blue scarf to match.

so who is the third victim?

peace

Assalamo elikuim

Great posts Br.Bhaloo(specially the description of your Eid clothes :) WOW you had Tahoora's methai) and Sr.lala marcy(I like your dress color combinations).
Till 10 Wednesday night we werent sure if the Eid was going to be on Thursday. I kept checking Isna website and in my mind I was sort of prepared for Friday Eid. My sons were saying that its going to be on Thursday and didnt wanted to sleep but I made them because of school. They usually put mehindi on my hands(cars and helicopter :))

At 10:30 one of my husband's cousins called to say that isna has announced the Eid. By that time I was too tierd to cook sheer korma and stuff. We usually go for lunch at my husband's cousins house but on thursday they had some appointment so I asked my husband to invite them instead. I was making a mental note of what I will be cooking.
My sister went to Pakistan this summer so she has brought clothes for me and family. So on the day of Eid I woke up at 5:30 and ironed everybody’s clothes, my husband wore brown shalwar qameez(nothing as stylish as Br. Bhaloo’s ) , I had a  turquoise silk shalwar suit it had same color thread work(kaam) it, older son had blue qameez and white shalwar, younger son had brown qameez and white shalwar and my daughter wore an orange and purple sort of hyderabadi dress( she was looking very cute:) photos anyone ) Mashallah, ok I am biased )
We had little break fast  and went for prayers. Although there were many people we got good parking. A young brother gave the khutba – it was beautiful (he said that how non-mulsims can listen to Quran and weep and it effects them and how us the muslim just read and don’t  apply it, why our hearts are so hardened  )
After the khutba and lots of Eid mubarik and hugs everybody dashed to the breakfast area. After that we went to home and I took out some chicken and goat meat to defrost. Since we didn’t have any lunch plans and kids wanted to go to red lobster, we all went in our Eid outfits to Red lobster:). Came back after lunch I called my parents, sister, brothers in CA. My husband called some of his friends and went to sleep( Since Eid in Pakistan is on Friday, we'll call his family tonight) and told me that he will do the vacuum when he wakes up .
I started my cooking since I had only 21/2 hour to cook & clean and told my kids not to disturb me otherwise they will be responsible for the consequences : ). Ofcourse they did :) . I cooked karahi chicken, goat korma, kahri( the besan thingy), sheer khorma, Alhamdullah I had some shami kabab in the freezer, made salad asked my older one to set the table and put everything which shouldn’t be in the living room in his room. My cousin called and said that she and her family will be coming also. I vacuumed the house clean the bathroom  and in between resolves couple of conflicts between my boys.  My husband woke up and said that since I am already cooking he has invited one of his friends and his family(he has a traveling job and they don’t have any family here in Philly) for dinner also. I always cook more than needed so that I can freeze it also or just in case my husband invite somebody :)
I had Eid gifts for kids of my husband cousin,my cousin but didn’t have anything for the other kid. Searched for something in my “things bought for gifts when on sale” box and found something and wrapped it. Alhamdullah everybody had a good time . Today we are invited for dinner and also on Saturday we are going to DC for another Eid day. So Alhamdullah we are having 3 days of Eid :)

Eid!

good idea, bhaloo for the Eid diary.

It is siwwayyan, a must in Eidul Fitr.

This Ramadan I had pheinyaan, only a little, and while in my childhood these would be immersed in milk and left overnight, I had them freshly immersed in warm milk, and then ate them while still a little crunchy.

The DiL's mother phoned my wife, just a little after Maghrib, that the Eid moon has been sighted.

A good fifteen minutes passed before the TV announced it. Since my eyesight hasn't been good, and since living in an immigrant urban suburbia we have lost touch with traditions, we do not look to see the moon for ourselves.

[i]There was a time in my childhood when the entire city would be on the rooftops to look at the moon. The excitement, the showing of others where to look for it, making sure that everyone in the house sees it and makes dua - all that has gone. Now we have a ruiat-e-hilaal committee of which we make fun all year round, but for the months of Ramadan, Shawwaal, and dhul-Hijj we wait for an announcement by the TV that they have declared the moon sighted.[/i]

It has been my habit to give fitraana when entering the prayergrounds or Masjid for the Eid prayers, but in recent years I have been trying to do so earlier so that the needy can use the money for their Eid, too. However, I do not always remember to do so well in time, and I have forgotten it this time, too. Plus, I have to find out when the prayers will be held. So, I ask my wife to drive me to the masjid, and I discover it is at 9:00 am. at Ayesha Masjid.

As we drove around, we passed the site of the Mrgalla Towers collapse, and we saw a group of people standing in a wide circle. My wife is surprised and asks what they are doing. "They are here for lighting candles, and praying for the dead", I say. She has seen no candles, but I show her the unlit candles on the ground. On the way back we see the candles have been lit.

A bida`a, I think. Then I remember that the dead include from other religions, too, and it is probably their relatives and colleagues who have gathered here.

Wonder if it is OK for us to join them in lighting candles for the dead. Probably not. While we share their grief, we cannot participate in their rituals. The prophet [saw] specifically forbade carrying fire in a janazah - by extention use of fire (candle light vigil) would be forbidden, too. We are forbidden from joining the others in thier religious rituals as well.

As I was writing this, my neighbour and his niqaabi wife (the neighbour who had chosen to excavate a room under my living room), had come to meet us for the Eid, so this had to be interrupted.

___________

In the morning as we wake up, the masjid near us announces the time of Eid prayers as 8:30 am. I tell my son about the times of the prayers at the two mosques and he says we will go to Ayesha Masjid. He is taking his time, so I drive to the Ayesha Masjid on my own. My wife and daughter do not go to the Masjid. My sister used to, but she has stopped as well. I remember in my childhood all of us including the women and the girls went to Eidgah Maidaan at Karachi. Alas, no more. The women in our families do not go to the Jumma`a. Our fault really. They are quite religious, but we haven't developed the jamaat concept, I guess.

We all have new clothes, sorry can't describe them. Never understood how to describe clothes, but the wife gets them made for us, and she understands, so they must be good. Well, she gives away the older clothes, and I do have a tendency to spoil the new ones with oil or something, but that is because people here do not stop offering only oily food.

When I come back from the prayers, my sister is here with her family, and we have breakfast together. Good food: chicken nuggets or something like that from K&N, beef seekh kabobs, chana chaat, sheer khurma, chocolate cake. Then they leave. Later we will go to their house for lunch.

Then the neighbours (the one's I have talked of) came. They had come perhaps in the spirit of Eid, and perhaps the earthquake has brought to them the uselessness of living for acquiring more and more property.

It was time for Jumma`a prayers. I told my son that the khutba is to be attended, and he came out of his room well in time for us to catch the tail-end of the imam's discourse in Urdu. After that we went to my sister's house for our lunch. Had we been at Karachi, the family would have gathered at my mother's place, but here we are the only two of the family, and we go to her house.

My sister has invited a friend's family we know. It is good converstaion and good food again:
chicken biryani, mutton kutchree ka qeema which is a speciality of Delhi walas, a special type of chicken curry that my nephew has cooked, rass malai. The lady is a teacher and poet, too. SHe has written an uplifting poem about the earthquake, not the usual depressing stuff.

After asr we come back to our house.

The wife has lost her spectacles, and we were go to the samdhiana (family of SiL or Dil), but I have forbidden her to drive without the specs, so there is tension in the house, and she announces that she will not go to Wah to my friend's house.

Well, going there is important, but driving should be safe, so I do not relent.
______________

Good news, dd and ddil had searched for my wife's specs, and failed to find them. Then ds had a go, and found them. Now we can go to the samdhiana. After a couple of hours we take our leave, leaving the son, daughter and DiL, and come home. Said i`sha prayers, and here I am, typing away this report.

What has Eid meant in these circumstances. There is still this feeling of not being connected. The heart is still hard.

Some day I will retire, and hopefully leave the matters and worries of this world in more suitable hands. Would I be able to concentrate on the deen then, I wonder?

[slm] and Eid Mubarak!

I'm guessing i've probably got the most boring eid around here. On Wednesday night theres only a few rows when i arrive for Isha. I manage to get to the first row and sit right in the middle too, which i admit is'nt rare :). The announcement is that Eid is tomorrow (Thursday), and everyone starts calling ppl to say Eid Mubarak. I call a few friends and tell em the virdict.

When thursday arrives, I wake up and have a bath. Since there are so many people expected for Eid in the Bayarea, there are two Eid Prayers. The first khutbah is given by a local brother, and the second is given by Imam Suhaib Webb. I go for fajr riding my bike (Middle of the front row again 8)) ,  and wait for the eid prayer. Soon at about 7am one brother tells me to do the takbir, and hands me the mike. I give it to the brother next to me and tell him to do it. He takes it and tell everyone to first go right to the front of the masjid (as a huge crowd is expected). Me and a few brothers make a circle in the front, and the rest form rows behind. The takbir is started (with the microphone passed around the circle). Then someone in the circle Asks where Shaikh Jibreel is (who did taraweeh during ramadan). One brother says he's in the third row or sumthin, and another brother goes and fetches him. At 7:30 the khutbah starts.....and ends. (I cant remember what it was about, so don't ask...). Then there's a ton of hugging. Ribs bang againsts ribs, and lotsa ppl get winded...

Usually there are Donuts and tea served. Instead of donuts theres some sort of square shaped sweet with powdered sugar served in it's place. There are two huge tents where all the vendors are set up. While im having my tea one brother asks me if I am asked by one of the officials if I am free, and then I am set up as a cotton candy vendor... :o. Within ten minutes, my whole arm is a sticky mess, and the machine starts to act up (the cotton candy starts gettin concentrated in the middle). After a frustrating half hour, I finally get relief, and they close down all the stalls for the start of the second Eid Prayer. To put the rest in a nutshell, I bail! Hopefully some other guy can take care of the rest of the stickyness...

In all it was a fun (kinda boring) sticky Eid.  :) Alhamdulillah...

Well my eid was pretty unprepared. For some reason i wasn't expecting it to be on Thursday because my hubby said it was most likely to be on Friday. First our masjid website posted that Eid won't be on thursday, then later changed it to Eid being on thursday. My brother called me at 11:30pm to tell me. I had just sat down to relax a bit after putting the kids to bed and getting the kitchen cleaned up. i jumped off the sofa, cleaned up the house more, got some Eid clothes ironed and ready for the gang(gang being my husband and 3 kids). My husband and eldest son(7 years old) got ready for the 8:30am Eid prayer. Husband wore a nice greyish colored kurta shalwar, and son wore a black kurta and white shalwar and it also had one of those dupata type thingy but he refused to wear that. I stayed at home with my 3 year old daughter and 9 month old son. My daughter has a huge problem with too many new people, she just freaks and doesnt stop crying, and I didn't want to ruin other people's prayer too. Hubby comes back, then we go to an aunty's house for breakfast, daughter wears a thing called chata pati gherara?? which my mom got from pakistan, and 9 month old wore a very cute little kurta pajama my nani sewed. Aunty's house is small and crowded with too many people so my daughter wants to be held the whole time which hard since she is wearing silk she keeps slipping! :D

Afterwards we go to my mom's who lives about 5 minutes away thank goodness. Hugs go all around, daddy gives out eidi, my nani and my mom take over the kids so i decide to go finish up some Eid shopping. Come back after 2 hours, give out eid presents. Make ras malai, while my mom cooks up dinner which includes haleem, some potato dish, kababs, sheer korma. 2-3 other families come over to my moms and we have dinner and give each other's kids eid presents and goody bags. Then daughter has a fit because she is dead tired, hadnt had a nap that day and it was 10pm(I know, we're spoiled). We go home, get the kids to bed.

Today mostly i watched ARY channel and cried whenever they showed the kids that have been affected by the earthquake so I decide to give all my eidi to them and make some more donations. May Allah ease thier pain, all those children, homeless and orphaned...

Good Idea Bhaloo!

The night before I am shocked and grateful for the sis who calls me and tells me that ISNA accepted a moonsighting on a moonless night according to Moonsighting.com. I just shake my head, say Allahu Allum and go wake up Ali with Takbir! He is dazed and confused and together we go and wake his dad, who thinks it is suhoor time! Our religion is so great! We begin our holiday with Takbir! Subhanna Allah.

I freak out, nothing is ironed. No food for the potluck breakfast at the Masjid and the library isn't decorated and our makeshift planetarium needs the crescent moon to be added signalling the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid! I just ask Allah swt for help, set the clock for 6am!

Ah.. coffee.... I start my day with a hot brew and the sunnah recommended odd number of dates. I begin to iron.  Ali is wearing a beautiful outfit sent by our Madinat-Halima. It is a white thob, with white embrodiary and tassle, topped with an intricately hand decorated white kufi. Mash Allah, with his skin coloring he is so handsome. Over this he is wearing a cream collered bish with gold threading from our own Siddiqui.  Both of them deserves kudo's as they fit him perfectly. Nice to think that this Madinat Al-Muslimeen family makes sure my son looks spiffy!

My hubby wears a brown srtiped dress shirt with brown suade pants, looking more American than his son! I am wearing a long fustan dress made by a grandmother I met only once. She stopped by the library one day and was thrilled to see the work I was doing, and sent it as an appreciation gift and went back to Jordan, I never got to thank her!  I am really large and this must be the first time something sent me fit... to a 'T" It is a simple cut with a simple design, rather elegant. The lightest grey almost white. My scarf was supplied by our own Mona... Jazak Allahu Khirun for those who helped dress us!

A newly married sis dropped off a sweet potato pie the day before and in my fridge was some left over cheesecake. Grateful to Allah for this stuff, I quickly make a platter to take to the masjid.

Subhannah Allah, everyone is showered, dressed and ready to go to prayer. Ali and I 'Takbir" all the way to the Masjid.  Alhumdullillah, I get there in time to open the library before prayer and finish the planetarium. I glance over to the wall and see the picture Timbuktu and Salem sent our Masjid, hung in time for Ramadan.  This on line internet community has touched me in so many ways!

The Prayers were great. This year they had a sis guarding the door, keeping it closed so the loud kids would not out loud the Imam. The Imam said he would not start until he got a tap on the one way window on the sisters side, indicating that we were quiet! Mash Allah, it was the first time in years I heard the Eid Khutbah in its entirety.

His Khutba was about a problem that overwhelms our community. Racism. It has reared its ugly head for years, but everyone has ignored it. One of the most profound, yet simple moments was when he was saying that we are all bound by the shahada/kalimah. At that moment i looked up at the crowd and it brought tears to my eyes. I am so grateful Allah swt choose me to be in His ummah.

After prayer and the community breakfast, as Ali and I were walking to the car, the Imam stopped us and asked us to come to his home for tea. I told Ali how lucky we are, that few people in the world get to spend such close time with their Imams. Later I asked my hubby and he said he never went to the Imam's home, back in the Emerates.

Ali and I are depressed, no community dinner that night, apparently someone was having a party and it was decided to have the dinner Sat. My Hubby steps up to the plate and takes us all to Red Lobster! Yum YUM!

We get home, and in the mailbox was an Eid Card from a brother on this board. It was the icing on the cake!

::) Eid embarrassing moment: Sis who gave me the sweet potatoe pie, comes in the Library. "Is that the pie I made you ?????'
Sheesh kabobs... a woman really can pick out her food a mile away and amongst three million other dishes!

[slm] All and Eid Mubarak Again!

Well, I can't start mine without mentioning my place of work.  I know, I know, I know!  Some people will say: "here she goes again always mentioning the UN or UNICEF!  Can't she do better than that, for Allah's sake?"

Oh yes, sisters and brothers, my Ramadan and Eid are entertwined with my place of work simply because I could not take leave during Ramadan - having done so in June.  And Koffi Ananan (the UN Secretary General) included the two Muslims Eids - Eid-Ul-Fitr and Eid-Ul-Adha among the UN Holidays to be observed globally on the UN Calendar of holidays in 1998 regardless of whether you are Muslim or not.  Believe me, some staff members, especially in the U.S. were not happy with this.  But for Muslims working for the UN, it was about time and a welcome pleasure and gesture.  So, all Muslims in the UN took leave for Thursday just in case.  Friday was already an Eid holiday.

So, the Islamic Eid-Ul-Fitr holiday was fixed on the UN calendar as Friday, November 4, 2005.  Hence a on Wednesday, I wrote to all colleagues in the Section were I work and said:  "Hi All, if the moon is sighted tonight, then be advised that I won't be coming to work tomorrow.  This is because the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar - not fixed and is based on moon sighting."  In my Section, we are two Muslims, a Sudanese brother and myself.  He was also not coming to work on Thursday but for Mohammed, he had completed his 30 days of Ramadan by Wednesday having started on Tuesday, October 4, 2005.

Zakatul Fitr was given out on Wednesday as per instructions I left at home.  And because the possibility of Eid being either Thursday or Friday was there, we always prepare for Eid in advane.  In this case, we prepared for Eid on Tuesday.  During the day, Iqra Radio had given the Chief Kadhi (Qadi) the chance to explain to Kenyan Muslims what to expect that evening about the announcement of Eid.  The Chief Kadhi gave out all his telephones numbers for anyone who is sure to have seen the moon to call and say so.  He also said if the moon is sighted in either Tanzania or Zanzibar, then Kenya Muslims will celebrate Eid on Thursday.  The whole night was left open for callers to advise.  The annoucement came sometime during the wee hours of the morning.  And you can imagine the the excitement and joy for Kenyan Muslims to celebrate Eid the same day together even if some had fasted 30 days and some 29.

Eid morning.  Takbir everywhere!  From Iqra radio and all the Masjids!!!  Takbir has a way making me want to cry tears of profound joy.  The trek to open grounds and all masjids begin.  Everywhere, you see Muslims in colourful clothes.  And Takbir continues upto the venues of salat prayers.  Muslims in Nairobi went to the Sir Ali Muslim Club in large number secause apart from the Masjid itself, the ground is big enough to accommodate many people as well as other Masjids in the different parts of the City.  The men in my household went to the Sir Ali Muslim Club while the women myself included, went the Pangani Masjid.  During the second rakat of the Eid prayers, my head collided with that of a little girl who was running in between the row of women praying.  As I took the rukuu, bam! For a while there, I got dizzy then my vision cleared.  Her mother was in the row infront of me.

My sons put on what Sis Kathy has described Ali wearing only here, it is known as Khamis (Somali) or Kanzu (Swahili).  I wore a beautiful flowing Somali outfit known as Dira (Dirac in Somali spelling) in golden colour.  It is free flowing material with cuts for the arms and neck only and comes with a top chuni in the same material, with a matching scarf and same colour petti coat is worn underneath.  My sister wore the same Somali outfit but in red colour.

Breakfast was Mandazi known as Mahamri (Ummnajma would understand what I am talking about) with tea.  Lunch was Wali (white rice) with stew and plently of meat.  This day, the door (gate)  is open and everyone just walks in and eats. Children as well as grown people ask for Haqal Eid (money for Eid).  For the kids, I have to have plently of change so that each one will get something.  I forgot to buy the candy and chololates that the children had gotten used to from my house during Eid. For the adults, I give what I can, to a designated number of people.  My sons and my sisters had already gotten theirs before Eid for shopping, etc. My cousin brother brought his 4 children to my place for Eid.  This has become tradition for them. He leaves them and come to pick them at 6:00 p.m.

In the evening, I went to visit my Aunt who was hospitalized in the last week of September.  Her daughter from the U.K., her niece and granddaughter were with her.  We stayed for over two hours just chatting and having fun.  The whole day upto Friday, Eid greetings kept pouring in.

This particular Ramadan and Eid were for VERY SPECIAL for me.  I fasted the whole 29 days without a break.  I did not give in to colds that were persistent and took my medicines at night.  Prayers helped a great deal and my health improved a whole lot more.  I was able to pray the Eid Salat and to crown it all, KENYA MUSLIMS PRAYED EID-UL-FITR the same day for the first time in a precendented history.  What more could anyone ask for from Allah except be INDEBTLY GRATETUL TO ALLAH SWT?

I got some pictures of the Eid prayers at the Pangani Masjid and will share, BIIDNILLAH.

ALLAH'S HAS SHONE HIS MERCY AND BLESSINGS UPON US.  Alhamdu Lillah.
