Police had the group under surveillance since June but reportedly decided to intervene after they ordered large stockpiles of chemicals. In a day of dramatic developments: SUSPECT Omar Baladjam, 28, was shot in the neck after allegedly firing on police near a Sydney mosque; A COURT heard the group was about to kill "innocent men and women in Australia". Prosecutor Richard Maidment QC said: "The evidence suggests that each one of the group is committed to violent jihad, either by martyring themselves or doing acts that will do very serious harm"; THE suspected mastermind was Melbourne Muslim cleric Abdul Nacer Benbrika, better known as Abu Bakr, who has previously described Osama bin Laden as a "great man"; MELBOURNE man Ahmed Merhi, 20, who is expecting his first child, dreamed of being a suicide bomber: "He wanted to die here. He said he wanted to be a martyr (for Islam). It was quite clear that he wanted to go the way of a suicide bomber," Detective Sergeant Chris Murray told Melbourne Magistrates Court; MERHI also led the others in defying an order to stand up in court, telling magistrate Reg Marron: "We stand only to God"; DETECTIVES said they had 240 hours of telephone intercepts and electronic surveillance of the suspects; and THE raids continued last night, with police and bomb squad officers raiding a home in Glenview Ave, Panania. Police have alleged the group had stockpiled hundreds of litres of the volatile chemical acetone – the same substance used in the London bombings – and was preparing to begin a campaign of terror within weeks. More than 400 state and federal police swept across Sydney's southwest about 2.30am yesterday. Raids took place in Lakemba, Belmore, Wiley Park, Greenacre, Illawong, Punchbowl, Hoxton Park, Condell Park, Ingleburn, Belfield, Bankstown and Kemps Creek. Riot police were on standby in Sydney's west last night amid fears of a backlash from angry Muslims. After apparently shooting suspect Omar Baladjam in self-defence, police allegedly found a second pistol and papers detailing a suspected target in his backpack. Baladjam was expected to be charged at a bedside hearing today. Seven other Islamic extremists were charged yesterday. They are expected to apply for bail in Central Local Court on Friday. Another nine suspects faced court in Melbourne yesterday. The seven men arrested in Sydney were charged with conspiring to manufacture explosives in preparation for a terrorist act. The accused were named in court yesterday as Mohamed Ali Elomar, 40, of Bankstown, Khaled Sharrouf, 24, Moustafa Cheikho, 28, and Khaled Cheikho, 32, all of Wiley Park, Mazen Touma, 25, of Bankstown, Abdul Rhakib Hasan and Mirsad Mulahalilovic. Police will allege the same chemical used in the London bombings in July – acetone – was being hoarded by the suspects for a similar attack in Sydney and Melbourne. Acetone is a key ingredient in common nail polish remover but becomes a deadly explosive when mixed with hydrogen peroxide (hair bleach) and sulphuric acid (drain cleaner). The explosive known as acetone peroxide was dubbed the "mother of Satan" after the London bombings in July, which killed 54 people and maimed hundreds of others. Operation Pandanus tracked the group for 16 months as they travelled between Sydney and Melbourne. The seven charged in Sydney did not appear in court, but footage of the arrests showed most of them in traditional Muslim dress and long beards. A simultaneous raid in Melbourne caught nine extremists, including firebrand Muslim cleric Benbrika. The Algerian-born Benbrika is a devoted follower of Osama Bin Laden. State and federal police joined forces with ASIO to execute 23 search warrants in Australia's two biggest cities. At least six more arrests are expected in the coming days. Police Commissioner Ken Moroney said yesterday the raids had prevented a "catastrophic" attack. "I'm satisfied that we have disrupted what I would regard as the final stages of a large scale terrorist attack here in Australia," he said. The huge counter-terror operation was a massive boost for Prime Minister John Howard, who rushed through special legislation to make yesterday's raids and arrests possible. The PM was accused by sections of the Labor Party, the Greens and Democrats of playing up the terror threat for political gain. "When it comes to the safety of theagents Australian people and the security of this country there is no roomfor political manipulation," Mr Howard said. Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty said the investigation would continue. "The operation is a long way from finished," he said yesterday. "There's a lot more work to go." He assured the Islamic community it would not be targeted. |

[/quote] Interesting that is their only proven crime so far. That and not standing up in court for the judge of course. If all the other things are proven true and sometimes I wonder if we ever know the truth, this is very sad, because of their actions the whole community will suffer a great deal. I don't know why these people don't think. They are only thinking of themselves and revenge. Don't they know about what our deen teaches and the reward/punishment of the hereafter? | Allah hu allim, In the UK there were many times the police claimed to have foiled bomb plots, and gave lists of deadly weapons and explosives found. They all turned out to be lies. You can't really trust the Zionist press. But even if they were Mujahideen, we are taking the words of the enemy if we believe them when they say our Muslim Brothers were targeting civilians. How do we know that their intended target was not a military one? It is the characteristics of the racist Zionist Australian regime to target civilians, not the characteristics of the Mujahideen. These are the people, who massacred the peaceful monotheistic native inhabitants of Australia to steal their land. These are the people who locked up the survivors of the massacres in a tiny island to try and force them to die of starvation. These are the people who lock up refugees in concentration camps, including young children for no crime other than not being white, for indefinite terms. And these are the people who are currently committing genocide in Iraq. We should trust our brothers and Mistrust the genocidal war criminals in Australia. I personally believe the accusations are fabricated. The Zionist Australians really fear Islam. The aboriginals are currently converting to Islam at a massive rate. There is nothing the Covetous Australians fear more than an Aboriginal Muslim. This is because the massacres and genocide that they have perpetrated against the Aboriginals have been so successful because the aboriginals responded so peacefully. The White Nationalist Christian Zionists who rule Australia know that once the Aboriginals convert to Islam, this peaceful response to Murder, Rape, stealing of Children will end. And it may result in the Zionist forces of white Nationalism losing the land which they have stolen. The Zionist government have already made new laws to stop people converting to Islam and to keep Aboriginals away from Muslims, such as segregating prisons racially and threatening Aboriginals who intend to go to Muslim Countries with exile. I think that the solution lies to the North. The Indonesians should replace their government with an Islamic one and invade Australia, and liberate the Muslims, Aboriginals and all other oppressed people from the yoke of English Zionist imperialism and colonialisation. The English who want to go back to England should be allowed to go; those who would like to stay should convert to a more human religion such as Islam or pay jiziya.
