18 people reportedly killed, 120 injured; blasts have earmarks of al-Qaida

AMMAN, Jordan - Explosions hit three hotels in the Jordanian capital Wednesday night, and at least 18 people were killed and 120 wounded.

A police official said the explosions indicated the involvement of al-Qaida, which has launched coordinated attacks on high-profile, Western targets in the past.

Roger Cressey, an MSNBC counterterrorism analyst, called the serial explosions “a hallmark of the jihadi network.”

The first blast occurred at about 8:50 p.m. at the luxury Grand Hyatt hotel, popular with tourists and diplomats, and shattered its stone entrance. Associated Press reporter Jamal Halaby, who was at the hotel, counted seven bodies being taken away and many more wounded being carried out on stretchers.

A few minutes later, police reported an explosion at the Radisson SAS Hotel a short distance away. Police said five people were killed and at least 20 were wounded.

Another explosion was reported at the Days Inn Hotel, and police said there were casualties.

MSNBC analyst Steve Emerson reported that the explosions at the Days Inn and Radisson were triggered by suicide bombers. Emerson, citing sources, said a wedding party was under way at one of the hotels as one of the bombs exploded.

Jordan, a close U.S. ally, has arrested scores of Islamic militants for plotting to carry out attacks in the moderate Arab kingdom. It has also sentenced numerous militants to death in absentia, including the Jordanian-born leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

In July, prosecutors indicted five Jordanians in an alleged conspiracy to attack intelligence agents, tourists and hotels in Amman. Al-Zarqawi has not been linked to the alleged plot.

Both the Hyatt & Radisson Hotels are owned by Palestinians. The Hyatt is owned by Sabir Masri, said to be one of the wealthiest families in Jordan. The Radisson Hotel is owned by the Nazal family, which is from Ramallah.

The Hyatt hotel is home to numerous travelers from the Gulf region, as well as American businesspeople and government officials traveling in and out of Iraq. It is one of the few hotels in Amman totally accessible from the road, as is the Radisson.

Hotels increased at other sites
Other U.S. hotels such as the Sheraton, Marriot, Four Seasons and Intercontinental have stepped up their security in recent months for fear of attacks. They are set back from the roads, unlike the hotels attacked Wednesday.

In July, prosecutors indicted five Jordanians in an alleged conspiracy to attack intelligence agents, tourists and hotels in Amman. Al-Zarqawi has not been linked to the alleged plot.

U.S. officials believe al-Zarqawi and Osama bin Laden operations chief Abu Zubaydah were chief organizers of a foiled plot to bomb the Radisson.

The attack was to take place during millennium celebrations, but Jordanian authorities stopped it in late 1999. Abu Zubaydah was captured in March in Faisalabad, Pakistan, in a raid by the CIA, FBI and Pakistani authorities. Al-Zarqawi remains at large.

The Associated Press contributed to this report. This breaking story will be updated frequently.

Inna lillah wa inna ilaihi rajeeoon

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/10/05) - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today offered its condolences on the death of Rima Akkad, the daughter of internationally-known filmmaker Mustafa Akkad, who was killed yesterday in one of several bomb blasts at hotels in Jordan. CAIR also offered condolences to American Muslim families in Texas and Virginia that reportedly lost 16 relatives in the attacks.

Akkad's father was seriously injured in the attacks, but is in stable condition. He was famous in the Muslim world as the director of the 1977 film "The Message," which was based on the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Akkad also produced "Lion of the Desert," a film biography of a Muslim leader who fought the Italian occupation of Libya.

I just heard on NPR news that Mustafa Akkad died from his injuries this morning.
I hope this lets everyone know that terrorism as a methodology just does not work, and the people they hurt are innocent people that probably did more for Islam than they ever will.

Innocent people keep dying, and this keeps going on with nothing being accomplished.
