Hey brothers and sisters,

I thought i ask everyone on the board about there choice of a car. Its time to replace one of the family cars a 94 Carolla, due to a minor collision. From your personal experiences what car would you recomend? and what car do you currently own or have owned??

Toyota Carollas and Camry are excellent, durable cars ( wve drove the carolla like no tomorrow, and it still drives strong 3 of us got our license driving this car)  but we want to try something diffrent.

The other family car is a 04 CRV which is excellent, comfortable to drive and good on gas but weve only had it for a couple months so couldnt really say much about it for the long term.

My personal car is a 98 BMW 328i which is amazing, ive had it over a year, its very reliable, solid, good on gas considering the size of the engine "2.8L" and more then anything this car is comfortable.

so whats your choice? fav car? what would you recomend? were looking to buy something 1999 or newer.

Jazakallah for all your opinions and help :)

Don't buy a car. Get a bike, exercise more and be more happy.

p.s. just for the record, I don't know much about cars, so i'll my brother Sabri answer you (he's a member of this board too).

p.p.s. Sabri likes cars as much as I like bikes  :P, Needless to say it's obvious who is more healthier.

p.p.s.s. He likes to diss. my bikes....

I test drove a corolla last month, i thought it was good.

The honda crv is a phenomenal vehicle.  I had no problems with it and I put nearly 90,000 miles on it.  Just changed the oil ever 6 to 8 thousand miles, added this rear differential fluid at 80,000 miles, and changed the cooland at 36k and 72k miles, also changed the transmission fluid at 75k, and air filter like every 20k miles.  I think that was about it.  oh and tires.   It's very reliable, no problems at all.  it's a good small suv.

I think the nicest SUV out there in terms of customization capability is a Tahoe or a Yukon (same thing).  Put some 22" or 24" chrome wheels on there, or why not go all out and put some spinners.   :o   Add a couple of subwoofers in the back,  dvd system with lcd screens, black leather and a black color and your all set.  GM/Chevy have some good discounts about $10,000 to $12,000 off the sticker price.  The drawback is that they are American and may have problems down the road, but they look nice.  I test drove one and liked the feel.    An H3 looks interesting.

I met Al-Basha a few weeks ago (it was the weirdest thing, I heard him talking to someone at the masjid by his place, and I said, hey I recognize that voice, it's al-basha, and sure enough it was) and he has an accord coupe, looks very nice in silver.

My favorite car was Shaze.  She was a VW Jetta.  She doesn't have much competition, because the only other car I have owned is Aunty Flowerbody.  She's a Suzuki Cultus, who likes to screech when I make left turns.  I love her, but it's more of a love-hate.  Apparently she's dying (even though she's only about a year old).  Shaze was adopted by a family and I hear she's doing well.  My mom had a car whom we called "the mothership".  The Mothership got stolen, and we were all lost or something.  My dad has a had a whole series of Toyota Land Cruisers.  They all had the same name.  Patrol.  With an "a".

My advice to you is ... whatever car you buy, make sure you name it.  What good is a car without a name?

On a more serious note...my cousin's cousin's friend bought a second hand 3 series (beemer) for about $84,000.  What a waste of money.  If you want to sell your used BMWs...ship them to Pakistan...even with the shipping, you'll be making a ton of money.

Good luck...and may Allah ta'Ala fill your purchase with barakah.

Wasalaam.

Someone suggested i name my car "Khala Shezada"

Bhaloo, the CRV's are awsome on the low maintenance, the one we have is only at 30,000 miles so we got a long way to go before any services besides the oil changes.

LOL SUV's , i duno bhaloo, BIG suvs look awsome when they are all done up, and all those American Auto makers have exellent prices on them, but personaly i would never get an SUV, personaly I prefer Sedans or Coups, an Japanese or European. they just looks soo much better and more powerful, and alot more reliable and last longer also.

Yes, I remember him.   :D  I didn't know about the hijab thing.  But I remember he took very good care of Yasmine.

If you ever have any service lights come on, make sure you take care of it.  This one brother I know, just kept driving his CRV even though the temperature gage was like really high.  (He had the coolant replace a few miles back and they forgot to put the lid on it, so all the coolant leaked out).  So his got ruined and he needed a new engine.

I remember once my check engine light came on, and that was because when I was filling up gas, I dropped the gas cap on the floor and it cracked a little (hardly noticeable), and the car's sensor detected it as a problem and put the check engine light on.  So I needed a new gas cap and that fixed the problem.

Yeah that's true.  Though I think the new Mustang looks pretty nice and this new one from Pontiac, the G6 looks nice.  But you are right, they aren't reliable.  If you want to go with reliable and not worry about anything, stick with Toyota and Honda.  You might want to look at the Toyota Solara and Honda coupe as well.   Oh another very nice looking car is the Nissan Altima.  Did you know that it is bigger then the Maxima.  They are built on the same frame, and the Altima has more room.

When you are ready to buy a car, let me give you some tips:
* Dealers will try and pressure you into buying the car when you are visiting their dealership, they know once you leave they have very little chance of getting you back, and they try to use all sorts of sleazy techniques.  They like to take advantage of women and foreigners.

*Do some reasearch, the internet is your friend.  Go to http://www.kbb.com and http://www.edmunds.com (to get pricing reports and see what other people are saying about the car and problems that they have).

*It's been my expereince that the dealers that are super big (as compared to mom and pop ones), will get you the best prices, because they get better incentives from the manufacture, i.e. if they sell X number of cars they get more money back.

*I believe in buying cars below INVOICE cost, and in really popular cars, like Camry and Honda Accord, I believe in buying those, several thousand dollars below INVOICE cost (you heard correctly, I'm not talking about MSRP price, I'm talking about INVOICE price).  THough it's difficult to come very low on Honda cars, they control their inventories really well.

*Like I said, the internet is your friend.  The last car I bought, I emailed like 10 dealers and told them give me your best price and I will go with the best price.  It's better then going and visiting all these dealerships and wasting all my time arguing with these people.  Prices varied so much, like the best place was as much as $3,000 less then the most expensive place.  And the reason being was that they were a big operation and could afford to sell the car at a loss, because they wanted to meet their quotas for the month and get a huge rebate from the manufacture.

:D hehe ive got a black BMW that i drive ( and dont share with my bros who are 19 and 17) hehe and people still said i needed to name it,

Bhaloo: Ya were leaning more towards a 4 door accord, might go a few years used like 1999 or 2000. Ya some of those small dealers are sleezy, i remember all the places i visited before i found the right BMW at the right price, inshallah i wana upgrade that in the spring to a 2002 330ci or 330Xi, those are really sweet , all wheel drive and unbeliveable luxury and comfort.

Thanks for the advice on the CRv ill be sure to let my abu know.

Mohmmad you might want to go for one of those special events hosted by Lexus and Mercedes Benz, maybe BMW has one.  Some of the brothers from my work are going to a Lexus one today.  What they have there is a special race track with some obstacles where you can test the cars.  And they probably provide free *FOOD*.  You can probably check out their websites and see if there is anything local to you.

I have been curious as to what is so special about a BMW, and need to drive one to see why it's called the ultimate driving machine.

This was just on the news today it sounds like really good deals, but i dont think its going to encourage me to buy their vehicles.

"Hoping to boost sales, General Motors Corp. on Monday announced a new discount program of "Red Tag" prices that could knock from several hundred dollars to more than $4,440 off the list price of some of its 2005 and 2006 model cars and light trucks through Jan. 3"

I checked the websites for anything near me in and around Toronto, Ontario but no luck:( i live an hour west of Toronto hehe in what some refer to as The Boonies, and we dont have a BMW, or Mercades dealership. the nearest ones are like 30-60 min away.

Bhaloo, when ever you  have an opportunity to drive a BMW go for it, go down to the dealership and take one for a test drive, the guys at the dealership are the really freindly and really knowledgeable about BMW's after all hehe they are the Ultimate Driving Machines! its hard to describe it, but you feel it soon as your behind the wheel.

When i get a chance this week im going to go check out some of the dealerships here for 1999 - 2001 Honda Accords, im really looking for one with less then 60,000 miles

Volvo is my car of choice because I am above all a practical person in my choice of vehicles ( which is perhaps why I detest Mercedes Benz and dislike BMW  :P ).  Ehem..to get back to the issue at hand...

Volvo has repeatedly been voted by car magazines and car experts as "the safest car to drive".  So, since it will be your brothers who will be driving this car, it has to be a very safe car, in light of the fact that they will be helming the wheels guided by their machismo and testerone  ::) Plus, Volvo's body is not made from flimsy metal that will splinter at the slightest knock ( as was my experience with Nissan ).  And because the Swedes are environmentally conscious people, Volvo doesnt consume petrol like its running from tap water ( think german cars and ehem..Toyotas and Lexus ).

Phew..my personal fave is the Volvo XC90.  It has extra safety features and the first fully collapsible back seats to change it from an MPV  into a somewhat stationwagon.

DISCLAIMER : To all the Merc, Beemer, Toyota, Lexus and Nissan lovers....it was all tongue-in-cheek :)

Also besides safety, one should look at price, reliability, and cost of ownership.   That's why I personally stick to Hondas and Toyotas.
