Books for Hajj.................yea or nea?

slm,

When I attended a Hajj seminar recently the Imam said we should be preparing our whole lives to go to Hajj and I thought to myself 'How true!'.  In Hajj, because of the amount of people and things that happen-- your true self will come out in those moments. And only if you've disciplined and practiced patience will those things come to the fore. Also, you just can't bring out your Dua and Fiqh books there to start reading so you end up saying the duas you've memorized in your life and doing things based upon what you know.

So let us all start now so then when Allah invites us to visit His House one day inshaAllah we are prepared.

This is a long introduction to try to get people to post the books and materials they think helped them when they went to Hajj, so please post so you can help others!!!!

Here is a Hajj bebzi to start you out... []

slm,

InshaAllah I'll go first. Here is my list so far of stuff I think that has helped me a lot in Umrah and perhaps will help when I make Hajj one day inshaAllah.

Fiqh us Sunnah book of Hajj
- No doubt everyone buys a book on how to do Hajj, but this is like a primary source and has a lot of value.

Inner Dimensions of Worship by Ghazali
- I just thought that it really gave a whole other dimension to Ibadat. The chapter on Salah and Hajj are the most relevant even though very short.

1000 Roads to Makkah by Michael Wolfe
- This book took months to read because it has volumes of Hajj accounts. I thought it was amazing. It totally changed my perspective of Hajj completely and gives me a deeper understanding of it throughout Islamic history and culture.

Road to Makkah by Muhammad Asad
- I know, I know.. I just had to add this. It's not really about Hajj, but its about travel and makes a person understand the Middle east and Arabs of yesteryear a bit. He does go to Hajj in the book which is an interesting account in itself too.

The Travels of Ibn Batuta
- I think I remember this having an interesting account of Hajj in his time

Here's things that look interesting but haven't gone through yet

Ali Shariarti's Aspects of Hajj book
Hajj & Umrah made easy little spiral notebook
Hadj by Michael Wolfe
History of Makkah
History of Madinah

ASAK,

One excellent book that I used is "Hajj  Umrah and Ziyaarah" by
Mufti Abdullah bin AbdurRahman of South Africa.

It is a small pocket size book (pages 267) but has lot of information on
the basics of Hajj and their siginificance.

    It is available from Halalco.com.

I would recommend "Fazaail-e-Hajj" by Mohammad Zakariyya Khandalwi
for spiritual preparation, which is quite often neglected. As jannah said
it should be done through out life time, if not atleast a few months
before embarking on the Hajj journey.

One basic advice that a brother gave me might be useful is:

" I will not harm or inconvenience any muslim knowingly and will
forgive any muslim who does so for the sake of Allah."

I read Shariati's Hajj book a long time ago, it was just called "Hajj" at that time, but I'm assuming it's roughly the same book.  It's a good read, in the same vein as Ghazali's Inner Dimensions, my mother really liked it when she read it before her first Hajj. There are some interesting reflections on the internal dimensions of Hajj, though some of them go a bit too far in my opinion. Because of the author's background, read this book only until one is comfortable with and have a good understanding of both the aqeedah and basic Hajj fiqh of Ahl-us-Sunnah wal Jamaah.

Hadj by Michael Wolfe is ok, I like 1000 roads to Makkah better. I didn't thing it was as upliftiing as I thought it might be. If I recall, this account of Hajj was the one before his second Hajj which was the one profiled on that awesome Nightline episode some years back (still the best Western media piece on Islam ever in my opinion; any Hajji would love to watch it over and over, and some actually do!)

BTW jannah it is 1000 roads, not 1001; 1001 roads is the sequel that may be written by some Makkah-phile one day.  ;)

The History of Makkah and Madinah books are pretty good; definitely worth reading before or after visiting the Haramayn. The one thing they could have included was some maps.

I would agree with most of the other books mentioned. Fiqh-us-Sunnah is definitely worth it; check out the end of the book and there's this detailed, easy to read, sequential global overview of everything. On my first visit to the Haram I copied it shorthand on this little piece of paper and used it for review.

I would read the chapters about Hajj in the Autobiography of Malcom X, very powerful, it's one of those books that every American Muslim should have in their back pocket. Hard to think of other books offhand, other than flipping through a few of those coffee table picture books of the Haram, in case you need to get ultra-psyched even more.

wlm,

thanx for the advice and suggestions bros

i think i wrote 1001 because i want my account to be the 1001st? ;)

i've heard people say not to look at the pictures because it desensitizes a person... don't know how true that is, but i just don't want to psyche myself up and not be able to go or have a very difficult experience.

i think when i'm there standing in front of the Kaba then i'll believe it and be like whew alhamdulillah i'm really here!

This book by a revert was quite useful, because it throws in lots of practical tips on how to make your Hajj an easier experience.

jannah, do you have an MP3 recorder? Because it'd be great if you could get some recordings of *that* mu'adhin from Masjid al-Haram.

The book reccomended by Brother Kashif (Getting the Best Out of Hajj by Abu Muneer Ismal Davids) is very good, with lots of excellent tips.
He is not a revert though, Brother Kashif.  He was born into a Muslim family in South Africa, later moved to Australia and then lived in Saudi Arabia for around 10 years.

jazakallahu khair for the correction.

Another book i thought of was the small hand book that comes with a string round it so that you can hang it round your neck. Its published by al-Hidaayah i think. It contains the basics of what to do in which place at which time, etc.

Also, any good du'a book would be handy.
