hysterectomy??

I am not sure if thats what it is called. I was just wondering if anyone on the board has gone through this and get some input from them. My mother has developed a cyst on her right ovary that has a chance of being cancerous. she has had bleeding for the past 3 weeks nonstop so the dr. wants to do surgery and take both ovaries plus uterus out. My mom is 45, she hasn't gone through menopause yet. I think she is concerned about the affects this will leave on her. She has heard things such as mood swings, depression, body acting wierd, hot/cold flashes and so on, so she is really scared. I just wanted to ask if anyone has had this king of surgery, and what were the side effects of it. JazakAllah, it would really help my mom and I out, because we don't know anyone who has had this done so we are a little scared and confused.

Asalaamu walaykum...

this must be a very scary time for you all. Don't be afraid of calling up the doc and asking questions like these.

Hysterectomies these days are mostly done throught the vagina, with perhaps some keyhole (tiny cuts) surgery for the ovaries. Sometimes they are done with some cuts low on the tummy. Either way, they heal very well and are very routine operations. You could ask the doc whether they will take the cervix out too: it won't make much of a difference, except that cervical smears won't be needed every few years!

Taking out the ovaries 'causes' the menopause, so there will be menopausal symptoms: hot flushes, mood swings, less libido, vaginal dryness and so on. Many women who would normally have a few years to go before the menopause choose to go on HRT to help these symptoms. That's something to discuss with the gynae doc. They may also suggest some pills/diet and exercise advice to help look after the bones, which can get thinner with less oestrogen. There are plenty of menopause alternative therapies (black cohosh, red clover) if you're not into taking 'drugs'.

A hysterectomy can have different 'meanings' for different women. Some women are quite grateful that they won't have periods any more/risk of unwanted pregnancy/risk of future gynae problems. Some women may feel that it somehow takes away a little of their femininity. That's something that can be talked through with family/friends/counsellors/nurses/docs etc.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

if the cyst is in an ovary, why not just take out teh ovary?

Thanks for all the info. Thats what I am worried about with my mom, she will feel like she has lost her femininity, and get depressed about it. The docs were thinking of taking out just the ovary with the cycst in the begining, but they did a blood test and she tested high risk for developing cancer in the cyst, so they want to take everything out to be safe that it wont spread if it does have some cancer cells.

I think everyone deals with it differently.  I know about 4 women who've gotten it done.

Some of them have been really relieved, and 2 of them had a really hard time dealing with it.  But they're all okay now.  I think her life is probably more important ... so she should listen to the docs :S

Wasalaam.

Sister, you may be speaking of a CA125 blood test and if you are, not to give you false hope, but it is not an accurate test for women who have not gone through menopause. Ovulation can result in a false high.

I know, I have a cyst and have for 3 yrs, yes it needs to come out, and surgery freaks me out. I have an ultrasound every 6 to 12 months, looks like a simple fluid filled cyst. (Have her as the doc for an ultrasound and if she has had one ask what it looked like.)

I'm no medical proffessional but from personal exper and reading, they usually take the cyst with the ovary and send it to the lab while the patient is still on the table and based on a quick test determain if it could be cancer, if so they take th rest out and send it for further study and if not I think they just remove the cyst.

Find out if that was a CA125 test and maybe have you mom re test during the approx time in her cycle.
BUt the doc with CA125 and an ultrasound and other info should be able to give your mom the best advice.
I pray all will go well for her. I am hoping to have mine removed in Jan.

I have heard of women having no issues after a hysterectomy and others who do, tell your mom to start researching now to prepare and know her courses of action (medical, herbal, etc) should she have to have a total hysterectomy.
