Question :

What is the ruling on piercing the skin around the navel (belly-button) and inserting a metal ring?

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

We put this question to Shaykh ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Jibreen (may Allaah preserve him), who answered as follows:

This is self-inflicted torture. This is not a place where adornments are usually worn, and there is no benefit in this practice. It comes under the heading of changing the creation of Allaah. And Allaah knows best.

Question :

Is it permissible for a Muslim teenager who wears hijab to pierce her nose or eyebrow?

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

It is better not to do this, because it serves no purpose and causes pain and mutilation to the nose, and more so in the case of the eyebrow, by making holes in them. With regard to piercing the earlobes in order to wear earrings, this was the custom of women at the time of the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), so it is better to limit ourselves to that.

Thankyou I am going to take Shahadah at the mosque soon and I have nose, eyebrow and 2 lip piercings which I've changed them all into studs instead of rings and I dont want them to not take me seriously because of them. But as they are already done before shahadah do you reckon I could keep them or maybe some?
Wa Salam

salaam alaikum Sarah Marie.  Good to hear you are taking shahada. It's so amazing to hear about people still accepting Islam even after all the negative media attention we get.  As far as the piercings go, it would probably be best to keep them off for now.  As Muslims we submit to Allah on many different levels; we are described as *slaves* in the Quran. When we profess our faith we do things that are best for us socially, religiously, etc.  Body piercings are not customary to us but it is customary of non-muslims and as Muslims it's best to distinguish ourselves.

By the way, this is not a religious ruling, just my opinion.  Best of luck :-)
